Hi, Buffy Brew

I just use a tiny splodge of own brand non bio, but then i only have bf poo to deal with!

We're mostly in 2nd hand nappies. There are fb groups or stalk ebay/gumtree. Charlie Banana come up on zulily sometimes with money off. I would get enough of one kind of day nappy for 3 days then wash every other day, then have 4-5 night nappies as they take longer to dry :)

Hi Buffy, re washing, if I wash at 60 I use one tablet of fairy non bio, if I wash at 40 I use the same but add a scoop of miofresh. I also do a prewash/ rinse before main wash and sometimes an extra rinse after too. I've been using my nappies for nearly a year and no smells or anything yet. The miofresh doesn't seem to have done any harm.

Facebook groups like pre-loved cloth nappies and accessories are good for preloved nappies, plus it's real nappy week next week and there will be offers on at some places - I think Babipur might have a sale on already. And boots sometimes has MioSolos on 3 for 2!

NappyHappy · 11/04/2013 10:45

YesPP, should be with you soon. We have tinterweb back on at last. The exchange got frazzled by kids. The cabinet could do with being re-siting as it happens alot.

Arrived today, very very chuffeded thank you! Thanks was tricksy as you like finding half my stash suddenly didn't fit Shock

Thanks Pidj Flowers.

I now wash all my nappies at 40 with a small splosh of detergent and white vinegar. I have a new machine and I reckon the superior rinsing and spinning plus prewash option means nappies are fresher than ever. My old one was knackered and extremely cheap.

NappyHappy · 11/04/2013 17:42

Excellent Pidj, that was quite quick!!

NappyHappy · 11/04/2013 17:47

Excellent Pidj, fluffy post is always good. Grin

The growth spurts seem to happen overnight, it'll be sad when theres no more fluffy bums in the house.

BuffyFairyTopsTheTree · 11/04/2013 23:08

Evening all.

Thanks for answering my questions. I've read a few other threads and seen good things about Eco Sprout so might give that a go.

Thanks Biscuit. Babipur do have a sale on. I've ordered 2 Bumgenius Elemental (think they're the older version of the Elemental or I might be confused Grin) and some Bambinex liners. I'll keep an eye out on offers for Real Nappy Week.

I've ordered also 1 minky and 1 bamboo pocket from alba baby.

Now looking at Fluff Heaven site. Offering 2 LL bamboo for £10, LL sized pockets for £7 and 2 Blueberry wraps for £18. This could be getting addictive Grin

I was wondering if it might be more economical to try bamboozle stretchies for night in case we have DC2?

BuffyFairyTopsTheTree · 11/04/2013 23:13

Does anyone have issues with night time nappies being sodden? I worry for DDs skin with her rash.

Currently using a paper liner because of the rash cream (prescribed Timodene 2 x a day and using Weleda at other times). Then LL bamboo with 2 bamboo boosters between the nappy and a Blueberry wrap.

We've had no leaks but in the morning DDs skin is wet from the nappy. Should I try a fleece liner despite the nappy cream? Maybe let the cream soak in before putting the nappy on?

NappyHappy · 12/04/2013 10:04

Buffy, its very addictive. I've had to stop now as my Maternity Leave finishes on Monday so it'll just be one wage coming in.

I use fleece against the boys skin at night and have started using flushable liners and have no rash ishoos. But do put cream on if needed.

A few weeks into using the EcoEgg and I'm not as impressed as I was at the start. I've been putting in Miofresh too or Soda Crystals to help get rid of any stains (then wet straight onto the windowsil if not on the line Wink )

Ds2 is going through his taking his clothes off stage bless him. And climbing up the cupboards. I think with this on we'll be friendly with the A&E department frequently!

Now ds3 is settling for the night at a reasonable time I've started doing rapid return with ds1 and he gets his TV back at weekends depending on his behaviour in the week. His eating has improved since he has been back on his vitamins and fish oil.

rrreow · 12/04/2013 10:21

Buffy (I'm a big fan too by the way, recently rewatched all seasons.. might rewatch again once DS2 is born while breastfeeding) THANKS for pointing out the Blueberry wrap offer on fluff heaven!! I've been meaning to buy a few more but had been putting it off because of cost. Glad I waited now!!

NH that's interesting to know about the EcoEgg. What about smells, do the nappies smell clean (or at least, not smell) when using only the egg?

DS has finally started talking (after having about 1 word for nearly a year)!! He's 23mo so I know it's still all within the realms of normal but I'm quite pleased. He's also definitely saying words in both languages (we do OPOL, DH English and me Dutch) and seeing as I'm the only person he hears the minority language from, and I work full-time so spend most of the day not with him, I'm chuffed to bits!!

NappyHappy · 12/04/2013 13:10

what's OPOL? Dutch, cool Grin . Ds2 doesn't say words just lots of noises and I can tell by the sound what he is after. He's 2 in October and I'm not too worried either, DS1 was a later talker too now you can't shut him up!

The nappies don't have a particular smell from the egg, I'm still going to use it til it runs out. I've started putting a few drops of orange oil in the conditioner drawer to give them a whiff if they don't go on the line. I'll change the wash cycle and see if that helps the stain removal as much as previous washing methods.

rrreow · 12/04/2013 13:18

OPOL means 'One Parent One Language'. So each parent only ever speaks their language to the child. It's an especially useful approach in our situation as I am literally the only person DS has the opportunity to learn the language from. DH doesn't speak Dutch unfortunately so when we're together we speak English, but I always address DS in Dutch. It's been a long time coming but at least now I can see it's working! It's very gratifying. Also DS has recently (FINALLY) started saying 'mama' (he says 'mamaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa' which just melts my heart hehe) although at the moment he also calls DH mama Grin

Oh god this real nappy week is so bad for my bank account! Just bought 4 Blueberry Coveralls (was going to get 2 but then I'd have to pay for postage.. so now I'm getting 4 because that makes sense?!!). I'm glad to be getting 4 though because I couldn't choose between the designs, they're all so nice. In the end I went for Dinos, Monsters & Giraffes with velcro and Elephants with poppers. Also bought some more Cheeky Wipes yesterday to deal with incoming new poopy baby. Oh and I got tempted into a new wet bag as well. But you see, I really need all this stuff you know...

LeBFG · 12/04/2013 13:27

I reckon a bamboozle at night would be a good thing Buff (we call our buff orpingtons buffy). I would look into the fleece covers too.

DD is finally using fluff in the day. For the moment I only have nature babies bamboo fitteds. They are just fine but looking forward to some pockets. The single Alva newborn i have works ok, though for the moment DD is only doing small poos Confused, not the mega leaky ones DS was doing at her age.

Interesting about the egg NH. Keep us updated Smile.

DS has just gone 2 and says very little clearly. Because he says mama oo (mummy look) the paed ticked the 'talks in sentences' box Confused X2. I heard lots of boys start talking between 2-2 1/2? He gets french at the CM rreow and says a couple of words now. Much respect to you - I think it must be very difficult to persevere in a language no one around you speaks.

NappyHappy · 12/04/2013 15:38

That's a great way to learn! Grin

You have to have things in even numbers so 4 wraps is just fine, and the rest of your purchases. Ahem Wink Wink

Will do BFG, I think I'll put it on a superwash next time as these new washers use less water so it might be that.

rrreow · 12/04/2013 16:28

NH my nappies go on a specific 'hygiene' cycle that my machine has which uses more water than the regular cotton cycle. Also I read that when you wash nappies it's good to have a full load, because that causes lots of agitation between the nappies (i.e. the fabric rubbing together) which helps them get clean.

BiscuitCrumbsInBed · 12/04/2013 17:44

Ooohhh rrreow lovely blueberry coveralls... I have monkeys and giraffes and they are very cute. I absolutely agree with NH you have to buy them in even numbers and £9 for new is a bargain. I just spent 20 mins sorting all my nappies so I definitely have too many - need to get pg to justify buying more Grin buffy I use bamboozles at night with a fleece liner and I slather on the weleda, I do think that using fleece not paper at night is nicer on her bum. I always use paper ones in the day. She doesn't poo in her night nappy though - if she did I might reconsider!

I've recently made a major life decision... I've started soaking my nappies in cold water instead of dry pailing I'm skipping the rinse/prewash when they're soaked so the wash is quicker. That is the biggest news I have to share! Grin maybe I need to get out more?!

NappyHappy · 12/04/2013 20:25

Poo soup. Wink let me know though how you get on??

I'm going to have to wash them again, odor of wee. Hmm I even used the cotton cycle for mid-dirty clothes.

Shall wash with the usual detergent shortly. Using the baby cycle.

BiscuitCrumbsInBed · 12/04/2013 21:01

Yeah it is a it soupy! But rubber gloves on and with laundry bag it isn't too bad - she's been doing some impressive squirty spready poos lately and it seems to stop staining though so worth it I think. Plus my nappy bucket and washing machine are both in the bathroom so I'm not lugging the bucket around anywhere. There were a few unfortunate splashes on me yesterday though which was a bit gross!

NappyHappy · 13/04/2013 16:33

Keep me posted though with how you get on? The amount of times I've stuck my fingers in poo... Confused

The baby each cycle has worked a treat. Had to get them off the line and dry them indoors though but hey ho.

Can anyone recommend a good huge wet bag? The zip bust on one of mine Shock

rrreow · 13/04/2013 23:28

NH I have a smart tote from Smartipants which I give to nursery & use for out & about, but they also do a bigger one the smart pail: www.fill-your-pants.com/nappy-bucket/hanging-pail.html holds 15 nappies it says. I like the one I have, nice fabric, nice colours, washes well and it's got a chunky zip (I find chunky zips are less likely to get damaged).

biscuit oooh I dream of a bathroom big enough to fit a washing machine into!!

BiscuitCrumbsInBed · 14/04/2013 08:49

r our bathroom and kitchen are both teeny - washing machine was in there when we moved in, if it was in the kitchen there would be no room for a dishwasher - shock horror - and then DH and I would probably have divorced by now Smile I thought it was weird when we moved in, we always had the wm in kitchen before - but now it makes perfect sense... Weather forecast is good today, going to get my nappies on the line, hurray!

pidj I've just recommended real easys to someone on another fred, hope she likes them too, it was you who recommended them on here and I love mine!

NappyHappy · 14/04/2013 11:04

Thanks R, I shall have a look later. I quite like their nappies too Wink

Biscuit, I wondered why you had a wm in the bathroom but it sounds easier!

We're hopefully getting the bathroom adapted for DH, just got some forms to fill out then we'll see.

Its perfect drying weather out but it looks like it may rain. I've got a load of puke covered bedding to each thanks to ds1!!!

Discolite · 14/04/2013 12:13

Hi everyone, sorry to barge in but I was wondering if I could get some advice from what sounds like a group of seasoned cloth nappy users...

I have a five week old DS and want to move over to cloth. I liked the look of the pocket nappies but the Nappy Lady has recommended Bamboozle stretches with Motherease Rikki wraps.

How much of a faff are nappies and wraps compared to all in ones or pockets? And are there any other wraps you like that are, ahem, prettier than the Motherease Rikki?

DS's disposables frequently leak wee if that makes any difference. I also feel under time pressure to choose given all the great offers on at the moment! Normally I'd go for a mixture of things but my DP can be a bit slow at learning how to things (taken him five weeks to fully figure out the car seat and base!) so I think a max of two systems is going to have to be it.

Thank you in advance Smile

NappyHappy · 14/04/2013 14:31

Hi Disco, barge away!! TBH I find them all have the same level of faff ease of use. The stuff able pockets might be easier for your DP as its just a case of snapping the snaps, then again the bamboozle and wrap is just a case of Velcro! Could he practice on a teddy til he finds out what suits him?

Gen-y wraps are quite funky and a lot of people swear by Blueberry wraps.
