What does your seven year old watch on tv?

We live overseas, but do get a lot of British tv, but I find there is a real gap for tv aimed at kids in this age group. Dd1 is too old for cartoons ( but still likes some of them) but too young for sitcoms (gets bored) I try to get her to watch Master chef kids ( Australian) or decorating / travel shows, but am looking for other options.
Reading back it sounds like she watches a lot of tv - she doesn't really, maybe 1/2 to one hour a day. Thx.

I agree there's a gap in the market. We have a lot of films she watches spread over several days. She loves the old ones especially Sound of Music, Annie, the Railway Children, Oliver etc.

Dd, just about to turn 7, watches scooby do, tom and jerry, Africa, dancing on ice and James Herriot. Scooby Do can still give her nightmares!

Arthur is a big favourite in this house. Yes there is a gap - what is needed is a channel between the too babyish cbeebies programmes and the far too grown up ( thinking mi high, the dreaded tracey beaker) cbbc kind of stuff.

I have banned the cartoons like pokeman - they are just total crap.

We watch factual stuff, like Africa, GBBO, Masterchef the professionals was a huge hit, anything popular science-y and the one slightly naughty thing I let him watch is Miranda.

He cringes through it and giggles a lot! He is almost 8, too.

We love horrible histories too.

What channel is Horrible Histories on? We've only seen it on You Tube.

It is a bit sad that you think a 7 yo is too old for cartoons.
DD1 is 8 (just) and still likes them (I know some 15 yo who still watch them and if they are good I still watches them with DD1), phineas and ferb, kimpossible... even Dora and co with her 3 yo sister. Also thing like "art attack".
She loves cooking programs: "master chefs", the weeding cakes making, jamie's 15 min...
She watches "how it is made" and program like Richard hammond sciences programs, "backyard science" "Mud men" and historical programs.
Sitcoms for teen like "the wizards of weatherley" (sp?), she would watches the "famous five" series if it were aired again.
And animal's program, make over programs and travels..
And starting on more grown up movies (U) she is still too sensitive for PGs. She also like some game/quizz shows.
Also love "bear grill" and "ray mears".

It is like a healthy diet a bit of everything.

What does your DD like doing?
What are her peers watching at school? They like to fit in at that age, otherwise they might be excluded from the games in the playground.

DD7 loves Dr Who, Simpsons, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Avengers, Iron Man, Futurama, Masterchef, Man Vs Food, Arthur, Wipeout, Horrible Histories, Life With Boys , Good Game SP (aussie), Spongebob, Powerpuff Girls.

Definitly a mix of cartoons and real life now.

Oh and Mythbusters too.

Total wipeout, mr bean, nature programs, deadly 60, dr who & cbbc. Still watches lots of younger kids stuff to, why is 7 too old for cartoons ?

My DD just isn't interested in most cartoons now, I've not pushed her away from them. Her little sister has cartoons on but DD tends to walk away. She lives movies like Tangled so its not all cartoons.

Cartoons including Tree Fu Tom, Tom and Jerry, Scooby Doo, Shaun the Sheep and ones for younger children like Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom (which I think is very funny), in fact loads of cartoons still popular in this house.

Brainiac, Deadly 60, Operation Ouch, Prank Patrol, Hero Squad ( I think it's called), Gastronuts, Horrible Histories, Paradise Cafe, School of Silence, Junior Bake Off, Sarah Jane Mysteries.

Some Doctor Who (the less scary ones), Merlin, Mr Bean, various wildlife progs but Africa is currently v popular and stuff like Planet Earth, Blue Planet, etc You've Been Framed, The Simpsons, Total Wipeout, Man V Food, Harry Hill's TV Burp.

Mine still likes Disney Junior, but also GBBO, Strictly, Gardeners World, cookery programmes generally, quiz shows and her favourite DVDs at the moment are The Muppets.

You can get horrible histories on DVD if you can't get the on TV. It is awesome. They are available from the bbc shop or ebay and amazon. We bought the entire collection.

We are paying for kids channels on sky atm due to this. DD is 7 very soon but has a younger brother so will watch programmes aimed at slightly younger. They both like 'Jake and the Neverland Pirates' and other Disney Junior programmes. There are a couple on Tiny Pop that they like too but there are lots of adverts on there, umm 'Milly Molly' (isnt that Australian?) and they have seen every Madeleine.

We watch nature documtaries and films as a family (I quite liked 'Brave' )

We are in Egypt. She likes Disney Junior which I can't stand, and most of the other cartoons we get are ceebebies babyish stuff (octonouts, special agent Oso) but yes there are some cartoons which are ok (Arthur, Angelina ballerina, and movies like tangled...)

She doesn't speak Arabic well enough to watch tv, so she is watching different stuff than her peers anyway.

Too old for cartoons at 7? Bloody 'ell, I've read it all now.

DS2 is 8 & still enjoys In the Night Garden if no one is looking. Otherwise Total Wipeout, Simpsons, Futurama (if allowed), Merlin. Just about not scared of Dr. Who any more.

DS1 chose to watch Care Bears movie for his 12th birthday. All his school reports comment on how mature he is.

Dd 7 is going through a Matilda and Annie phase the films I mean.
She claims her children will be called Matilda and Annie regardless if their male or female lol.

However she still watches stuff like the rugrats on Netflix aswell.

DD is 8 and it sometimes seems as though at least 50% of the things she watches are presented by Richard Hammond.

Her favourite non-Richard Hammond programmes are Merlin, Doctor Who, MI High and Wolfblood. The last is quite grown-up.

Oh and yes to horrible histories, mr bean and deadly 60. Likes the slammer on CBbc too.

Tbh he says he's too old for things but if dd (younger) is watching something like horrid Henry , Justin's house, old jacks boat etc he watches them too

Film wise he's recently loves ghostbusters, honey I blew up : shrunk the kids, home alone, mr beans holiday, teen wolf....

DD is 7 and doesn't watch much television but like most things in this house it comes and goes.

At the moment she's enjoying Dancing on Ice, Britains Brightest and will watch Scooby Doo when it's on. She really enjoyed the Master Chef children's programme on CBBC recently.

DS who is 9 probably watched CBeebies more at 7 but it seems to have left our house now.

Deadly 60, Horrible Histories, Blue Peter, Operation Ouch. Mainly CBBC - she loved, loved, loved Wolfblood and is counting down the months to the second series.
