BSL Users!!

I know some of you are really good at BSL from previous threads. DD is deaf and I sign as much as poss with her, but my deaf teacher is away and I need to know the signs for pear and parsnip. Can anyone attempt to explain them to me?

Hi Catrin - i don't know the signs, I'm afraid. How old is your DD? I have a deaf 6 y.o. Literally only a few minutes ago I was on the phone to the Portland hospital, asking about a private cochlear implant. 50-55K! he wears hearing aids and has been assessed for a CI too but it's taking ages and ages to get him one, so i thought we might just about have enough money to go private. Maybe not... He's oral, which is why i don't know more than a few signs in BSL.

Cristina 7 - holy shit! 50k! Why is it taking so long to get a CI done? That's so crap. Is he on the Great Ormond St programme? Why have I been told dd would have to be implanted before 5 if it can be done later?
DD is only 6months old, but she is profoundly deaf at all frequencies and couldn't hear anything at 130 db, so have been told that aids may not work terribly well. I have been learning BSL as quickly as possible just in case her hearing aids don't allow her to have much/any speech, so sign all day with her.
Nice to "meet" someone else with a deaf child - although it is supposed to be v common, it hasn't happened to anyone I know!

My husband had a CI.

Where abouts in the assessment are you ??

He's at the Royal National TNE Hospital (Gray's Inn Rd). he was assessed about 3 times so far but he's been postponed because he has excellent speech & language with the hearing aids and the little hearing he gets through them. So technically he'd qualify for a CI but as he gets so much benefit from the hearing aids, he wasn't put forward. Over the past few days, though, he seems to have lost the little hearing he had left, which is why i'm looking into alternatives. He has good speech & his reading level is 2 years ahead (8.06 and he's 6.05 years old).

I think the age limit for the CI (4-5) is for children who've had NO benefit from hearing aids or no use of HAs before. my son has had his nerves stimulated all along (since he was 9 months old with hearing aids), so the change wouldn't be too drastic, just from one type of sound to another.

Are you in touch with your local NDCS group? Are you in London? I'm in SW London.

Notanoverdraft - how is your husnband's hearing with the CI? Dominic is v deaf (100-120 dB) but he managed find with hearing aids until now. He hears at 40-50 dB with them, plus lipreading and reading. I find it heartbreaking now to see how he's lost the little hearing he had. Our next appointment isn't till 18th May and then who knows how much longer it'll take, summer holidays etc. I'm getting v depressed about this.

We did - Dh rang them and they said they ahve no appointments before the 18th May. we also asked the GP to refer us to a different hospital, but he referred us to the same one, saying they might act quicker if they are asked for a second opinion (professional pride etc). They aren't. Now I worry we've been wasting all this time (going through this for the last 6 months before it became an emergency this past week) and we'd need to start from scratch somewhere else. His file is about 3 inches thick.

Sorry to hear about Dominic Cristina, you may remember we met at DELTA my son is Alex and he is loosing hearing too but not yet to a level where we have considered implants. I know people who have had implants at GOS and Southampton, can you be refered elsewhere.
Going back to Catrin, sorry I can't help with BSL either but have you used the NDCS chat room? I know lots of people on there would be able to help out.
