Why are there NO toddler groups in the afternoon?????

Is my 17 mth DD really the only toddler in the country who naps in the morning???? We've been to hell and back with her sleep (night and naps) and its just getting to the point where its acceptable. Changing her naptime is just not something I am willing to do. She goes down at around 10am for 1hr 20mins (not a minute more or less!). Every single toddler group round my way is at flippin 10-11:30. Why oh why oh why?????

I think most children nap in the afternoon. There was an afternoon playgroup at a surestart centre near me, very few children there. Those that did go all had to leave early as their mums needed to pick up from school.

plantsitter · 27/11/2012 19:59

I know of one. Where are you?

Gumby · 27/11/2012 20:01

So us with older children can get to school

Where are you? There are lots around here. Or you could go to soft play?

RillaBlythe · 27/11/2012 20:04

I know, same here. I would love a Playgroup from one to three close to dd1 school for pick up!

DomesticGoddess31 · 27/11/2012 20:05

Oh. Didn't think of that, derrrrrrr. Surely a 2pm group would leave enough time for school pick up though no??
plantsitter I'm near Winchester/Southampton.

Because the pubs are open by then? Confused

DomesticGoddess31 · 27/11/2012 20:08

My DD never crawled so has always found soft play hard work. She's getting more into it now, but I want to take her to a play group/music group so she has some proper interaction with other children as she loves people.

there are afternoon toddler groups here. normally 1-2:30 so people can do school run.

my local sure start centre does a few, i dont go as dd naps then.

SoulTrain · 27/11/2012 20:09

This always happens to me too - DS is 17 months and still has two sleeps a day. I'm in Portsmouth, we could meet in Fareham OP? Wink

DomesticGoddess31 · 27/11/2012 20:11

Happily Soultrain, seriously, pm me if you want to.

Afternoons are hard. Tried a dance class with DD. it was often hard to get her awake enough for the 1.45pm start (up, clothes on, grumpiness calmed, drive into town) and the other parents had to be away before 3 for school pick up. I imagine it would be the same for toddler groups. Latterly, I hated the fact my old toddler group didn't run from 9.30 until 11. It was 10.30 until 12 and always a rush to get DD home for lunch and nap before a complete meltdown. BUT, in the early days, she was having a morning nap too, so we were often late getting there anyway. You can't win!

sleeplessinderbyshire · 27/11/2012 20:12

I have always wondered this too. Esp for baby groups - for people with their first child mornings are chaos but you are ready and keen to go out and break up the horror of a day stuck in with a baby but there is nothing on. Am so glad my dds have swimming one afternoon a week

plantsitter · 27/11/2012 20:14

No use then sorry. Ours is run by DD1's preschool.

Is this place any use though? They seem to have a drop in thing every afternoon. But obviously it may be miles away from you!

TheSkiingGardener · 27/11/2012 20:14

I'm in Southampton and go to a toddler group every Monday from 1:30 to 3:30.

So they are out there! It's called Wessex Wobblers. PM me if you want more details!

EagleRiderDirk · 27/11/2012 20:16

I thought I was the only person irritated or who had a kid like this! Dd I'd now 22 months and did slowly start pushing her nap back in the end. She now goes at 11:30 normally, sometimes 2pm. I'm finally going to take her to a playgroup on friday. At least we're not alone.

cafebistro · 27/11/2012 20:21

My local toddler group is on from 13.45 till 15.00 and is held at the local school so no problems with picking up from school either.

Pascha · 27/11/2012 20:28

My local village group used to run from 1-3pm but they only had about 7 regulars there. They changed to 9.30am a year ago and now regularly have 25-30 kids there. It just wasn't financially viable as a morning session.

Pascha · 27/11/2012 20:28

*afternoon, not morning.

SamSmalaidh · 27/11/2012 20:34

Most children do nap after lunch I think, however my local children's centre also does 1pm-3pm groups.

PetaO · 27/11/2012 20:40

ALL groups here (toddler, drop-in, bf support, stay+play) are 10th till half 11. It drives me potty as we have worked so hard with DS naps and he will only have a long nap in the morning. Afternoon naps are only 30mins. We're in Newbury.

DomesticGoddess31 · 27/11/2012 20:48

Hmmmm ok well at least I'm not alone, but sounds like there aren't enough of us to make it worth while for the groups. A few more months of soft play and library visits then. Snooze!

Thanks for the suggestions though TheSkiingGardener and plantsitter. We swim at lunchtime on a Monday so Wessex Wobblers is out and I have seen that stay and lay session at Lanterns childrens centre but its quite a trek for me. Might try it if desperate though.

stay and *play session.....although stay and lay sounds quite appealing Grin

I find it really bloody annoying that these groups all seem to assume you have a child who needs picking up from school. I would love some activities at 3pm for an hour or two before the tea time witching hour (and my dd no longer naps but when she did it was 12/1230 for a couple of hours so 3pm was an ideal time). Baby groups at 10 are bonkers too as most small people will nap at 9/10 am
