Worst Parenting trends of 2012

Justine has been asked what she thinks is the worst parenting idea/fad/trend of 2012. We're not really looking for the worst parenting products- you can stick that in Mumsnet reviews, but rather trends- for example we're not too keen on this belly painting thing although you may be!

Anyway we're keen to hear your thoughts what do you think is the daftest parenting fad this year?

I saw a bib saying 'product of 50 Shades'. Putting your baby in something that makes the reader think of you doing the nasty, with handcuffs. Nice.

I think belly painting is cute!

Agree with the 50 shades thing, saw a changing mat today that said 9 months ago my mum read 50 shades of grey! Horrible!!!

:o because all of these fads were fads back when I was expecting DS1, 9 years ago. Just mostly over the pond, along with "diaper cakes" and other such nonsense.

I think the most thing I saw this year was a woman, dressed all in pea green, including heels, pushing an expensive bugaboo pram in the same colour, with all matching accessories. Don't know if it represents a fad of any sort, but it made me snigger because she was definitely overdoing the matchy matchy green love and I was imagining her house being full of the same colour, much to her poor greyly dressed husband's dismay.

Gender reveal cakes for baby showers where the sponge is either pink or blue. Also agree with the cake smash first birthday thing also not keen on the photographs where the baby is a week or two old and has its head propped up on its hands. They give me the creeps.

They all sound vile, i have just only just got over the introduction of the "play date" makes my teeth itch.

That bloody changing mat (50 shades) shouldn't be allowed - vile.

Hate beaded/decorated dummies ...and tattoos of children's names on parents. If mine had done that I would have changed my name as soon as I hit 18 just to brass them off!

I think the whole over "Americanisation" of pregnancy. A friend apparently had a "babymoon". I'm not even sure WTF that really is, but it made my teeth itch just thinking about it.

The cake smash thing is just revolting.

Baby showers are awful, but if you have to have them then I rather like gender reveal cakes - because it's cake .

Cupcakes with everything OTOH are well past their sell-by date, your average 4 year old will take one bite then pass it to mum to hold on to, creating mess everywhere.

yep, has to be the whole "mummy porn" concept. Yuk.

I'm not keen on the whole Team Yellow phrase.
