Talk to me about Transformers toys...

DS has his 5th birthday coming up soon and he has just gone NUTS over an advert for a Transformers toy with the word Cybertron in it but I wasn't really paying attention and don't know what it is. It's one of the 'robots that turns into something else' toy, not one of the videogames. I've had a Google and there seems to have been a Cybertron thing out in the 80s but this was definitely an advert for something new. Anybody got any ideas?! There were 3 robots and he wants the red one if that means anything to anyone :)

There is a range of Transformer toys available and they have gone through several incarnations (sadly the latest ones probably aren't as good as those that came earlier). They transform from robots to various vehicles, by twisting and snapping etc various pieces, all in one block. Some of the earlier ones were extremely complicated and beyond the capabilities of most 5 year olds, but they have always had various levels of difficulty, so if you look carefully, you should be able to find something suitable for your DS. There have been 3 Transformers movies in recent years, not really suitable for younger children, but there are also cartoon/animated movies from earlier years that probably would appeal to younger kids. They are OK - good v. evil robots battling over the Earth, that sort of thing, nothing too extreme.

Thank you! The problem is that there's a very specific one that he wants. It's a new one out and it turns into some sort of flying vehicle (amazon only seems to show one that turns into a car type thing....)

We got our dd her Transformers from sainsburys. The red one is Optimus prime.

Pay VERY close attention to the suggested age range when you buy the toys. Some of them are incredibly complicated to transform. I sat up on boxing night watching You Tube videos on how to transform Optimus to a fire truck it was that hard.

The movies are awful. Quite violent, bit sweary and Megan Fox is falling out of her clothes in them. And Shia Lebeouf is in them.

Haylebop12 · 30/08/2012 17:22

The ones that turn into flying ones are the decepticons (baddies) and one of them is starscream. Worth a trip to sainsburys though!

jelliebelly · 30/08/2012 17:25

Font know what the latest ones are called but beware they are ALL ridiculously complicated for an adult let alone a 5 yr old. Sadly 5 yr old boys absolutely Love the idea of them..

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 30/08/2012 17:25

Or this? amazon.co.uk/dp/B005P1PC3O

RedBlanket · 30/08/2012 17:25

Cybertein is the planet the transformers came from (according to DS). You can't buy it. And He has encyclopaedic knowledge of the Argos catalogue

Optimius Or Bumblebee are the best (again according to DS)

5madthings · 30/08/2012 17:26

yes be very careful which ones you buy! some are very complicated and even my older children struggled adn they are whizzes at techno lego etc!

there are some simpler ones that are much easier! i have no idea which one you mean, i am just asking my boys apparently cybertron is the name of the planet that the transformers lived on before the big war which destroyed it and then they came to earth!

5madthings · 30/08/2012 17:28

and yes optimus and bumblebee are the best, we have one that is an ambulance as well, he is called ratchet? i think.

there is a transformers series on tv cartoon network. i think you can buy some on dvd as well.

TwiggysGoneOnHolidayByMistake · 30/08/2012 17:35

Decepticon sounded familiar but amazon shows all of them as turning into cars... ditto your first link, Zombies - that's the one I first thought it was but it's a car not a plane :( Andhe said that robot was all red, not with blue legs like Optimus Wotsit has. Second link could well be it but at £70 he'll have to forget it :o

TwiggysGoneOnHolidayByMistake · 30/08/2012 17:37

Aha, decepticon planes were apparently an old subset of Decepticons.

5madthings · 30/08/2012 17:52

we have a plane one it is grey and black? they are they baddy ones.

i cant think of a red plane one.

what channel did you see the advert on?

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers · 30/08/2012 19:23

I knew cybertron was the planet Blush I'm a 32 yr old woman and I don't even have dc. HmmmHmm

TwiggysGoneOnHolidayByMistake · 30/08/2012 19:35

LOL, Zombies! :)

5madthings, I thought it was on the TV (not sure what channel) but DS says we saw it on the PC. I'm sure he's wrong though...

OP posts:
5madthings · 30/08/2012 19:45

the channel may have helped narrow it down.

was it def a transforming model? there is some lego type stuff that is also transformers, its not the official 'lego' but another make, i think you can get it in argos.

google red transformer?

NewStartSameStory · 30/08/2012 19:55

We have a very large box of bits that used to be transformers. They had bits, will come to bits (intentionally and not so). I think the best one we had was a very small simple bumble bee (yellow car of some sort). Basically we had to employ ds' older cousin to make sense of the instructions half the time. thankfully ds was a quick learner and soon got the hang of the toy and the fact that mum didn't have a clue so don't bother to ask. The more you get the easier the instructions are to decipher tbh but that won't help a lot. sorry.

Wiki knows everything

5madthings · 30/08/2012 20:03

www.hasbro.com/transformers/en_US/
