What do you tell a girl toddler her "bits" are called?

I have a boy and a girl. My son is 2.5 and knows that he has a willy but his baby sister does not. What do I tell him that girls have? Is there an equivlant of willy for girls i.e. something that is a bit joky but not rude or too "technical"? Thanks. Confused

we call it fluff in our family

Themumsnot · 22/01/2012 21:04

I went with vulva.

PermanentlyOnEdge · 22/01/2012 21:06

I am not very original. For DS(2) I use 'girlie bits' and (thanks to DS) 'front bottom'.

Do wish it had a name everyone knows, like willy.

dustbunniesmakegreatpets · 22/01/2012 21:06

I think the key thing is that you call it something - when I was a child I was told that "Boys have a penis and girls don't."

FebreezeYourJeans · 22/01/2012 21:08

Vulva here, a bit cringeworthy at first but that's what it is and you soon get used to hearing a toddler say it.

MaeMobley · 22/01/2012 21:08

we go with willy and fanny. I do tell them that the proper names are penis and vulva.

motherinferior · 22/01/2012 21:11

Fanny.

MsHighwater · 22/01/2012 21:12

I overheard a woman tell her daughter (who was on the loo at the time) "Don't forget to wipe your flower"!

I also once knew someone who had come up with "Nancy Pretty" as her euphemism of choice.

Please don't do either of those...

(We've ended up with "front bottom" or "front bot" by default rather than by choice.)

ThePathanKhansWitch · 22/01/2012 21:12

We call it a fairy. But in all seriousness if Bups Vagine thread had been going a few years ago it would def be Vagine.

I like the word, it's not ridiculously infantile like fairy, however i wouldn't hurt my ears to hear a child say "I need toilet paper to wipe my Vagine"

(In my head i'm saying it Vah- Jean).

FannyPriceless · 22/01/2012 21:12

We ended up with girly bits. Except that DD misheard us and thinks we said 'curly bits'. She now insists on this description.Confused Help us.

40notTrendy · 22/01/2012 21:12

My mum used tail Confused

VivaLaSativa · 22/01/2012 21:12

The proper terminology, Why call it something else? I never understood why some people cant refer to parts of the anatomy correctly. It's vulva and penis here.

JennyinCorfu · 22/01/2012 21:14

Loving "vagine"!
We use "bits and bum". I have just had a conversation with DD1 (3.7) about there being 3 holes.......red face icon thing....(she had diahorrea and thought she was peeing - can of worms!). I have told her though that the real name for bits is vagina but we use "bits" for short.
My friends variously use "Lily" (sadly this is DD1's actual name!!!!), "flower" and "Mary".

I also used to use front bottom but felt I was fudging her body knowledge with my own silly hang up so we had the vagina talk....

ThePathanKhansWitch · 22/01/2012 21:20

I just don't like the words Viva never use them. Cock and Fanny and Balls for me , even with GP.

Lilka · 22/01/2012 21:21

I told DS he had a penis/willy (used both) and girls had a vagina. He used to say 'gina instead and asked his preschool teacher whether she had a 'gina Grin

I have come across some real odd names before though - not really sure why? I did here a horror story from one mum in the US - a friends child told her teacher that a boy 'touched her cupcake'. Sadly the class had been making real cakes and it took hours before anyone realised what she was really saying :(

Lilka · 22/01/2012 21:24
  • should add the teacher didn't realise what DS was saying. She said "A what" and DS said "A 'gina in the middle of your legs" Grin Bless her she was even more confused and I had to explain to her when I picked him up. It was quite embarassing!
BelVita · 22/01/2012 21:24

her bottom. no real need to go into detail with a toddler.

marshmallowpies · 22/01/2012 21:26

I'm tempted to go for what Caitlin Moran said she used when her children were little, 'bot bot' - so your bum is your bottom and the front bit is your 'bot bot'.

It sounds less twee than flower or fairy or girly bits, but not quite as blunt as saying 'fanny'.

onelittleclara · 22/01/2012 21:27

we use la-la

Meglet · 22/01/2012 21:27

vagina / vulva / .......... or binky Blush.

I didn't think it was fair for 5yo DS to have willy and penis but 3yo DD to only have one option.

They do both know the proper names for each others bits, although DS keeps pronouncing it was 'bagina'.

FollowTheVan · 22/01/2012 21:28

'minnie' for now (she is a toddler)

Once she starts school and is getting a bit more clued up, I will explain the proper anatomical names e.g. vagina, vulva etc etc

RainySmallHands · 22/01/2012 21:29

Foof, here, And as for referring to anatomically correct body parts, DD often has a sore tummy rather than a sore abdomen/stomach. She may bump her noggin rather than her head/cranium. Or, she might cut her finger/Peter Pointer as opposed to her first digit. Not through any kind of squeamishness, just the way things are.
