...someone used my changing mat and wipes in the kitchen today and put her baby's bare (dirty) bottom onto it without wiping it down afterwards.

Was it rude of me to clean it and spray it with Dettol while she was still in the room?

euch!

Did she wipe it before?

well I wouldn't have tbh .. the dettol I mean .. I think that says yuk you're baby is so unclean

but then I'd have wiped the mat down with a wipe after use .. if I'd used one which I don't any more anyway I just plonk down wherever we are .. how's that for grossing you out

hub2dee · 23/11/2005 08:22

dirty twiggy.

Twiglett · 23/11/2005 08:23

2nd time round twiggy

Twiglett · 23/11/2005 08:24

am constantly amazed at what I will do with DD that I would never even have dreamed of with DS .. ooo the corners I cut .. at least 5 years of psychoanalysis in the making there

Bozza · 23/11/2005 08:37

I think by 18 months I was plonking DS (first child) down anywhere though. I think spraying mat with dettol was a bit OTT but I would have been secretly thinking that about you rather than being offended.

My changing mat and supplies live in DD's bedroom. So visitors to my house know that they can go up there and help themselves to whatever they need including nappies if they are the right size or use their own stuff wherever. I have a friend with DD similar age and the best thing is that we can just turn up without any supplies - nappies/wipes/sippy cups/snacks because its all there and available.

flashingnose · 23/11/2005 08:51

I'm confused - are you saying she left some poo on your changing mat? If so, of course she should have wiped it afterwards. Otherwise, I can't see there's an issue at all .

Bozza · 23/11/2005 08:53

Yes maybe different matter if it was streaked with poo. I had assumed it wasn't. But then I assumed that twiglett wasn't going around changing her DD on people's carpets and leaving them streaked with poo.

Lonelymum · 23/11/2005 08:56

I don't think spraying with dettol is OTT, but I wouldn't have done it in front of her TBH.

Like Twiglett, I started cutting corners after the first baby, but by the time I was on Number 4, I still dettoxed the mat every time I had changed a dirty (not wet) nappy, and he didn't even share the mat with anyone.

flashingnose · 23/11/2005 09:12

Well, I'm obviously a complete dirty Gertie then . Quick wipe with a wet wipe was my limit unless there had been a poo explosion in which case I took the mat downstairs and washed it. But the way I changed nappies, their bare bottom was never on the mat. Personally I think we are far too liberal with Dettox in this country but that's a whole new thread .

Bozza · 23/11/2005 09:15

No flashingnose I agree with you. If a wet wipe is good enough for the bottom its good enough for the mat IMO.

anniebear · 23/11/2005 12:13

I wouldn't have done anything whilst she was there and if a friend had done it I would be laughing!!!

Maybe when she had gone I would have checked it and maybe wiped with a baby wipe

Did she comment when you cleaned it?!

Mud · 23/11/2005 12:27

if mat had no poo then this is just like dettoxing loo seat after a friend has been to the toilet. so in answer yes very rude and have never seen any mum do this

flashingnose · 23/11/2005 12:31

Crumbs, Mud, long time no see?

Bozza · 23/11/2005 12:31

LOL Mud. Can you imagine it. You have 3 or 4 friends round with their kids. Everytime one of the mothers or older children go to the loo you nip in after them and do a quick spray down of the loo seat.

misdee · 23/11/2005 12:38

yes, very rude, if it was streaked with poo i would've have asked the parent to give it a quick wipe over herself. 'ere clean your babies poo off the mat, dettol spray and kitchen roll over there'

CarolinaMoon · 23/11/2005 12:40

i'm with flashingnose - I've never dettoxed the changing mat . I wipe off visible poo with a nappy wipe, but tbh I try to keep the bum in the air until I've wiped it.

LIZS · 23/11/2005 12:41

" leave it as you found it " - would wipe it off with baby wipe.

Mud · 23/11/2005 12:58

i have been around here and there flashing nose

motherinferior · 23/11/2005 13:00

Dettox???

Feistybird · 23/11/2005 13:02

have never used dettox on a changing mat (can't think when I last used it ever tbh) would've expected her to wipe it clean with a wetwipe afterwards (certainly not before, unless it was dirty) or I would do it - whether or not she was there.

Em32 · 23/11/2005 13:07

Dettox is a bit much - bit strong for your own baby's skin I would have thought?! But I would have given it a wipe with a wet wipe whether she was there or not. Doubt she would be offended - I would have laughed and said my baby wasn't diseased but sorry should have wiped it....

weesaidie · 23/11/2005 13:49

No dettol here (do think it is a little strong) so no I wouldn't have done that. I always wiped with wet wipes and probably would have done that (but hopefully not with her in the room, but then hopefully she would have done it herself!)
