...someone used my changing mat and wipes in the kitchen today and put her baby's bare (dirty) bottom onto it without wiping it down afterwards.

Was it rude of me to clean it and spray it with Dettol while she was still in the room?

euch!

OOH, i usually change dd on the floor in houses. God my freinds must hate my visits!! No really, i am expert nappy changer and swiftly place clean nappy under bum before removing dirty nappy. DD's bottom touches nothing.

Have to say though i always carry disposable mats when we're out as i hate those communal mats in shops/play-centres with all the grime down the sides just where baby puts her hands. Bleargh!! I too am on baby number 2 and what i find most amusing (well not really funny but YKWIM), is when she chokes on toast or something, i just say " spit it out Darling" where as with dd1 my heart would have been going and i'd be screaming!!

motherinferior · 23/11/2005 14:01

Once DD2 was standing I just changed her standing up, wherever we happened to be. And then frequently she'd trot off to put the grubby nappy in the bin.

bundle · 23/11/2005 14:14

I always put the clean nappy under dd's bum before i take off the old one, in case of any spillages it's easier to chuck the nappy and also prevents any poo contamination of changing mat. have been known to dettox mat

What exactly is wrong with a bit of poo that needs Dettol to cure?

Bozza · 23/11/2005 14:27

tipex. - thats sleep deprivation for you.

flashingnose · 23/11/2005 14:35

Tipex, I think you should have replaced the fridge.

Lonelymum · 23/11/2005 16:01

Those of you who don't clean your changing mat, do you a) not clean your toilet seat either? and b) use the changing mats you sometimes come across in public loos with impunity too?

I don't think dettox can be too strong for the baby's skin as it is does not come into direct contact with the skin and on the label it clearly shows it is designed for cleaning nursery equipment.

By the way, I am not big on antibacterial sprays and the like, but a bit of basic hygiene never went astray. When I had a changing mat and hadn't wiped it for some time, it always astonished me how a seemingly clean mat, once wiped, could produce so much black on the tissue paper.

Bozza · 23/11/2005 16:05

Yes I clean the toilet seat. But not after every use. Same with the changing mat.

handlemecarefully · 23/11/2005 16:06

Dettox was a bit strong. I would have surreptitiously used a wipe when she wasn't paying attention. But then I am generally quite fluffy.

Lonelymum · 23/11/2005 16:06

Yes but the poo doesn't touch the toilet seat usually whereas it is much more likely to touch the changing mat.

HRHQoQ · 23/11/2005 16:08

Lonely - yes I clean my toilet seat - but not every time some has used it! Got with my boys I'd be cleaning it 30 odd times a day and then I'd look like one of those demented woman off Wife Swap who clean everything each time it gets a speck of dust on it.

HRHQoQ · 23/11/2005 16:10

I think the only time I've ever got poo on the chaning mat was with DS1 who used to 'explode' and it went everywhere - otherwise I hold the legs in the air and fold the nappy over and rest his bum on the outside of that.

But then I'm with Twiglett - don't use a chaning mat at all for DS2 - haven't since he chewed his one to bits at 6 months old.

Lonelymum · 23/11/2005 16:10

QofQ - see my previous comment. And I have to say, I do wipe the loo seat most days as ds3 uses a potty and does his own emptying into the toilet! (Imagine the mess)

starlover · 23/11/2005 16:10

i never clean ds's changing mat unless it has poo on it!
and my toilet seat gets cleaned maybe once a week?

i certainly wouldn't care if a friend used a changing mat and didn't clean it afterwards!!!

and yes, i use public ones without wiping them first too...
AND i sit on public toilets without cleaning them etc etc

you know, there isn't really anything you can catch from a toilet seat or a baby's bum IMO!

HRHQoQ · 23/11/2005 16:16

but do you wipe it EVERY time some has been in the bathroom????

I taught DS1 to lift up the toilet seat (like he now does to stand at it to wee) before emptying his potty - that way a) it doesn't get over the toilet seat, and b) there's a bigger space to 'aim' the content of the potty at

Lonelymum · 23/11/2005 16:31

No I don't wipe the seat every time someone has been to the loo. I didn't used to wipe the changing mat every time I used it either, but I did wipe it after changing a pooey nappy - perhaps my children pooed more messily than anyone else's. To me, it was just baisc hygiene. I see some mums letting Johnny put some toy from the doctor's waiting room in their mouths and is then surpprised when Johnny gets a tummy bug. Again, to me it is just basic hygiene. (But I didn't care if my children put their own toys in their mouths, unlike some real obsessives I know!

starlover · 23/11/2005 16:33

ds puts all kinds of things in his mouth... toys at the surgery, toys at toddler group, leaves and twigs off the floor...

hasn't had a single tummy bug. in fact, overall he is pretty healthy

misdee · 23/11/2005 16:36

my changing mat has hardly been used, my older 2 use it for chasnging their dolls nappies lol.

i change dd3 bottom anywhere, mainly on the floor in the living room, but my bed, the bathroom floor, hospital floor, my lap. amazing how handy an old towel is isnt it?

Lonelymum · 23/11/2005 16:49

Some kids are healthier than others. Mine are all pretty healthy too. But I don't know how much hygiene has to play in that.... porbably not much given I sometimes don't clean my loo for over a month...there, you see! I am not an obsessive user of antibacterial products!

Mud · 23/11/2005 16:52

farmer's kids are heatlhiest of all .. rolilng around in sheep and cow shite all day .. dettox baaad .. shite good

bundle · 23/11/2005 17:09

try telling that to people infected with e.coli

starlover · 23/11/2005 17:36

agree mud! my friend grew up on a farm and we were always out playing in pi9les of poo and dirt! lol

if we ever dropped food on the floor or anything her dad would say "eat it up, it's clean dirt"

mummyhill · 23/11/2005 17:48

I would of been offended, nut I do tend to wipe down other peoples mats if I use them. As for the ones in public loos I just plonk a disposable mat over it first if it looks grubby.

However must admit I am with twig and change baby on the floor/my lap anywhere really unless it is particularly offensive. And being on number two am quite expert at it these days, even manage the explosive ones without mess everywhere.

mummyhill · 23/11/2005 17:49

One little question though why in the kitchen? Thats one place I won't change baby's bum to me thats as bad as being shuffled into a toilet to feed the baby cross contamination risks galore.
