Babies' nicknames. What and and why?

The baby arrives. A name has been chosen and yet, for the rest of his/her childhood years, they will be called something completely different. These names 'just happen.'
DS1 is Bubble
DS2 is Bodo (after a footballer, apparently) or Hubbachup Bear (where did that come from?)
DS3 is Footle or Charlie Brown.

Which/what alternative names have you given your littlies? And why?

i chose my 2ds names so they couldnt be shortned and ended up with this:
ds1 his name is shay is now called shaymus???!!
ds2 his name is zac is now called zacky thanks to his older brothers mis-pronunciation but they have stuck

nutcracker · 13/11/2005 22:53

Dd1 gets called Lolly, Lollipop, Lol or Littlebum

Dd2 sometimes gets called Sharon (as in Osbourne)

Ds gets called H, chunky monkey, snuggle bum or my little baby.

janeybops · 13/11/2005 23:03

Jonny has become Jim-Jams which itself is a shortened version of Jimmy-Jammy-Jonny

DD is sometimes called Topsy - started by her grannie that one. It bears no relation to her real name at all.

Ds was (and occasionally still is) pickle, because he is, sometimes. An affectionate term used in place of 'you are being a pain in the bum'. Was dolphin boy, because he made dolphin noises, and meerkat, because he used to pull himself up against my chest and look around like a meerkat.

collision · 13/11/2005 23:27

My boys are Max and Joshua and get called Maximino and MrJoshyJosh!!

My dad still calls me Jamjar and my DH calls me Collision.........never uses my real name.

MummyDayDream · 14/11/2005 09:03

Dd is Munchkin or sausage.
Ds is yet to gain a permanent fixture of a nickname, but is sometimes 'little sausage' - am sensing that he won't like that as he grows up!

DS1 has no nicknames (Awww)
DS2 - Sammy-lamb/lamb and when he was little we called him Chubba-bubba coz he was, well, FAT!
DS3 - jo-jo, jolup, Joda

Ironmaiden · 14/11/2005 10:27

My daughter is puddin' at the moment but she's so far been: munchkin, peanut, bubs, babypie, and she's only 6 months old! Don't know why, we have pet names for each other but have the same ones for 10 years!

SoupDragon · 14/11/2005 10:28

I call them both "Boy" to save me remembering their names. If I had my time over again, I would simply give them both the same name from birth and be done with it.

LittleB · 14/11/2005 10:52

dd is maidlet, or maidy as dp called her his little maid (it's a somerset thing).

Hazellnut · 14/11/2005 13:27

Chicken - not entirely sure why I just started calling her that once she was born and its stuck.... I think it might be because she was teeny (4 lbs 9oz) and her legs were really reallys skinny and so they looked a bit like chicken legs (am sure dh will have fun reminding her off this when she is older and has her mum's thunder thighs !!)

Twiglett · 14/11/2005 13:38

DD is Moo

because she just is

sometimes she's The Moog

because it just happens

DS grew out of monkey and boo

crazydazy · 14/11/2005 13:42

My DS has been called Moog too and DD is sometimes "Missy Moog" never call my kids by their names unless of course I am telling them off

alexw · 14/11/2005 14:18

Dd is mousey - not sure why... but when I use her real name she just turns around and laughs!

sickandtired · 14/11/2005 16:11

ds1 is woo woo (don't know why) and ds2 is boo baa - he had big eyes when born!

motherinferior · 14/11/2005 16:17

DD2 is Porgleyworgeous.

Well, she's small and gorgeous.

izzybiz · 14/11/2005 18:47

DS is TUBS (no hes not tubby!) his name is Toby.
DD is IZZYBIZ (hence my mn nickname) her name is Isabelle. not really sure why DS got that name, hes been that since a babe, hes now 13, and still called it!

Jasnem · 14/11/2005 19:09

DD2 is Twinkle - That's what we called her for the first few weeks of life before deciding on a name.

frannyandzooey · 14/11/2005 19:31

DS is Porty or Porters (short for Portly ). Until very recently, when asked his name he would say "Porty" which was always cringe-making when old ladies asked in a shop.

weesaidie · 14/11/2005 20:09

Oh, way too many monkeys here - which is what I often call dd!!

I think I may switch to second favourite nickname - pirate - as when she was a newborn she often looked like she had one eye shut.

Or the queen of sheba...

PeachyPlumPudding · 14/11/2005 21:07

DS1 was babagump, have no idea why- he just went all chubby suddenly after being a scrawny little thing (lasted about 3 weks LOL) and he developed the name. LOVE the look on his face when I call him it now!

Stirly is wurly, as in stirly wurly.

Harry is bobo- again, no idea why.

They all get called ness too. As in, sweetNESS gorgeousNESS loveliNESS

My Dad calls everyone Fred. that included me, my Mum, my sisters and the budgie. Now my boys nd my nephews. ?

muma3 · 14/11/2005 21:12

SugaPlum · 14/11/2005 23:10

My son (Tyler Jay) gets called Tigger/Tigger Jay/Tigs not sure why - think his Nan started it off when he was born lol, i tend to call him Monkeynuts, fits him quite well i think. My little girl (Leah Marie) gets called Lil Moo cos she looks like me (apparently) and my nicks Mitmoo - funny thing is tho Leah actually means cow according to some baby name meanings sites!
