Babies' nicknames. What and and why?

The baby arrives. A name has been chosen and yet, for the rest of his/her childhood years, they will be called something completely different. These names 'just happen.'
DS1 is Bubble
DS2 is Bodo (after a footballer, apparently) or Hubbachup Bear (where did that come from?)
DS3 is Footle or Charlie Brown.

Which/what alternative names have you given your littlies? And why?

DS1 we call Nippy or Nipper - he went through a stage of biting when he was little and it just stuck.

Ds2 we call cullson or cully as his name is Michael.

noops · 13/11/2005 20:16

i use ds1's name mostly together with his second name, but he is often called fruitloop too
ds2 is just a bank manager lookylikey so we call him sir at the moment

Ds1 is bud or monkeymonkey

My dad still calls me charlie chuck chuck or flower in business meetings - very embarrassing!

madrose · 13/11/2005 20:24

I call her pud pud - cos she's a little pudding, DH calls her his little monkey - cos she is

bubble99 · 13/11/2005 20:24

noops. Does he have lots of chins and a bad attitude? They really do look like grumpy old men when they're babies, don't they? Take an average baby to an old folks' home and compare:

No teeth? Check.
Incontinent? Check
Dribbling? Check
Needs pureed food? Check.

bubble, he just looks a bit grumpy with a fat face spilling over his neck, his hair is baldy on top and he has a little bit around the back...
ahh bless him he's just so funny
i totally agree about the OAP thing too- sad isn't it.
i just want to go in and hear him breathe now, had a pig of a day and got more crap to do this eve, but i must be allowed a few moments of calm.
thanks for the thread, it has made me think how lucky i am, anbd i was feeling sorry for myself

bubble99 · 13/11/2005 20:29

These are the best names, and the ones that last, aren't they?
DS1 (8 next week) has recently told me that I can only call him Bubble in private. I yelled it across the school playground recently and he was mightily unimpressed.

misdee · 13/11/2005 20:32

little angel keeps me going each day through this hell. Lollipops was because dd1 couldnt pronouce lauren, and called her lolly from when she was born. it was so cute when dd1 asked for babypops at the shop

bubble99 · 13/11/2005 20:33

Glad to be of service, noops.

Lockets. How could you have called her Seaslug?

OP posts:
roosmum · 13/11/2005 20:33

ds is roo, often 'little roo' (as in kanga and...) which i didn't expect to call him when he was named

& a whole bunch of other names (golly/gollipop ), depending on how silly dh & i are feeling!

bubble99 · 13/11/2005 20:37

This is the thing. Such a long time spent thinking of the 'proper' name, trying it out with the surname and all that, and then their nickname just appears as if from nowhere. No one thinks of a nickname for their child. I love these names.

Jessica is little monkey - simply because she is!

Rebecca has become known as Becky-Boos in the short time she has been here - probably change as she gets a bit older though!

foundintranslation · 13/11/2005 20:43

ds was 'honey bee' from the beginning and is now everything else 'bee' depending on the activity - sleepy bee, hungry bee, rolly-over bee etc. Also lamb, honeypot and honeypops.

sassy · 13/11/2005 20:45

Hey, J&RM, there is a trademark on Becky Boo! My dd1 is this, frequently just Boo.

Dd2 is mostly lambkin or lamb. Just cos she is.

expatinscotland · 13/11/2005 20:46

DD is 'Cheezer'. She's been so since she started to smile and DH would encourage her by saying, 'Cheezer. Cheezer.'

WickedWestCountryLass · 13/11/2005 22:07

DD is Cheeky Chumps because she is very chubby and even more cheeky!

DS is Chunky Monkey, even though he is not at all chunky, he is a bit of a monkey.

QueenVictoria · 13/11/2005 22:11

DD was missy lady or gremlin (a sort of merge of her two names Grace Emily)

DS is Oli Ba Ba (derived from DD calling him Oliba as unable to say Oliver)or Little Man.

edam · 13/11/2005 22:13

Ds was (and occasionally still is) pickle, because he is, sometimes. An affectionate term used in place of 'you are being a pain in the bum'. Was dolphin boy, because he made dolphin noises, and meerkat, because he used to pull himself up against my chest and look around like a meerkat.

hunkermunker · 13/11/2005 22:13

DS is the pup or hunkermunker ()

Or wombat. Poor child.
