mums and sons

Has anyone else noticed the prejudice there seems to be nowadays in favour of having a girl? I've read articles lately in which people state that 'every woman wants a daughter' and numerous articles over the months have appeared in magazines looking at 'mothers and daughters' and their relationships. Maybe I've missed them but I've not seen a similar article celebrating mothers and sons and their unique relationships. I'm extremely close to my mother so I am not denying the special relationships there are - but I have a son and I feel that there really is a magical bond between mother and son, he is heavenly, adorable, and glorious. I don't feel there's enough out there about this! It's almost as if some people feel I must be disappointed to have a boy...anyone else sensed this or is it finally time they sectioned me? let me know, girls!!

I know a mum with 1 boy and she cant have any more children. I have 2 girls and even if im only in her company for 15 minutes she somehow manages to get in how affectionate boys are and how she wouldnt swop her 1 boy for my 2 girls in a million years and how girls bitch and boys just fight then make up...rah rah rah rah...and I could come up with just as many stupid remarks but I say nothing...which she probably interprets as me agreeing with her but >she drives me mad.
I have children. I dont care what sex they are.
thankfully the rest of my friends have this view too.

Proud mum to 2 boys, I adore them both. Didn't care what I 'got' first time round, but was really happy when ds2 came along.
I get so much love and affection from them and they are both growing up into lovely, chivalrous little men. Yes, we have a lot of toilet humour, mess, mud, and mayhem in our home, but hey, I quite like being surrounded by adoring men - I missed out on a lot of that as a teenager
I have also suffered from the 'so are you going to try for a girl next?' comments. Actually, I am so thrilled with my luck at having 2 fab children, we aren't having any more. I've still got some sanity, some energy and some sex life left, so I'm quitting while I'm ahead
Also, really want to applaud charliecat for her sentiment above. One of my children was seriously ill 3 years ago and nearly died. ''I have children. I don't care what sex they are.''
bless 'em all.

Loved the article

Smiling I'm the same, never was a pink girlie girl. Unfortunately all the girls round me are - very much so, so I really really don't want a girl as I really wouldn't have a clue how to do the pink girlie thing, and I'm really not comfortable with it. Have a son at the moment and if we manage another would love to have another boy.

Have had several people ask me while I was pg if I wanted and girl and look at me funny when I was very firm about wanting a boy.

I notice it. When I left work to go on maternity leave a colleague said to me "oh I do hope you have a girl". I was quite offended as I had an inkling from day one that ds was a boy when I asked why she felt that way she said that boys were second best and you could not be fulfilled unless you had a girl! I also get annoyed because loads of my family have girls and want to extend their families but are put off in case they end up with a boy! My boy is gorgeous, lovely and funny and if he was a girl I am sure I would feel the same. I just don't get some people.

sweetkitty · 07/11/2005 13:28

In my family I have found the opposite is true especially from my mother, it was OK to have a DD first time around because apparently "you don't care the same with your first!" but when I said DB2 is a girl her reaction "oh nevermind I know you'll have a third!"

This drives me mad she then phoned me up to tell me that all the aunts were talking about how only she and my cousin had hit the "jackpot" of haivng one girl and a boy. As if DD2 won't be a jackpot!! I think because of this I never say oh we are having ANOTHER girl but that we are having a girl, a little girl in her own right not another DD1.

My mother has somehow decided that she is superior as she has had a boy and a girl!!!!!!! Think I'll remind her that it was my Dad who had more to do with it (she hates him).

I have to admit I always wanted one little girl but then I'm a girlie type of girl myself. If I have 2 or 10 boys I'm sure I would have been just as delighted. If we have a third baby it will be because we want a third baby not to have a coveted boy.

Sorry pregnancy hormones!

bosscat · 07/11/2005 13:46

I've noticed most of my friends all wanted girls and acted slightly as if I had won the consolation prize when I had my little boy. Now I have two boys and have no longing to have a girl if we have a third, just a healthy baby. I don't worry about the "a son's a son till he gets a wife" saying as I think it really depends on the MIL herself. Mine constantly acts as if her 2 sons have deserted her but she never calls us! She hardly visits and says she feels she's in the way. I know I wouldn't be like that but equally I know I wouldn't be the sort of mother who would want to pick the wedding dress out for her daughter either as I'm quite laid back so I think I'll be okay! I've told dh that if no-one comes to us for Christmas we'll bugger off somewhere hot, so we won't be weeping round our forlorn turkey in years to come!

I had always been told that I would be having girls(fortune tellers- yes I know!!!!! and also by the amount of sickness i am having) and it took a concerted effort over a number of years to accept that. When After my amnio I was told I was having a boy, I was slightly ashamed by how delighted I was. People ( and I'm not talking about this list) should take a second to remember how difficult it is for some of us to get and stay pregnant that I would have been delighted with what I got).

I admit (shamefully) I was one of those people that thought most mums want girls, only because that?s what I wanted? I thought. When I was told at my scan I was having a boy I was quite surprised. I quickly came around to the idea and by the time he was due I worried in case they had been mistaken as I was now really looking forward to having a boy. The reason I had always thought I wanted a girl was because I thought I would know how to take care, understand etc better because I?m one. How stupid!!!! I really want more children and whether they are boys or girls it does not matter, though I will say little boys are absolutely FANTASTIC?
