Fab tutor gave me an extension & organised a home exam for me.

But I still have to do the bloody work

So crack the whip & shout (but quietly as I am very sore and stiff today)

Ok am working now

Anyone got any good examples of phrases/sentences that technically word by word mean one thing but when used in speech actually mean another

Yeah right

Just what I always wanted

OP posts:
littleducks · 13/03/2011 20:38

am faffing about explaining that 'dog' is a furry animal but that dog eared and dog tired and nothing to do with furry animals.

Will prob use "Just what I always wanted" later on with bits on social expectations

KatyMac · 13/03/2011 20:40

Dog tired is dog related tho'

Not so sure about dog eared

OP posts:
littleducks · 13/03/2011 21:22

I dont really mean nothing to do with...just not literally i suppose....not explaining it well

So i have explained the meaning of dog, then said anyone who knew about dogs would understand 'fighting like cats and dogs' but would have to share an understanding with the speaker to get 'dressed up like a dogs dinner' or 'a dogs breakfast'

And there is something about dog tired and eared in there somewhere.

I'm doing linguistics......which is a bit odd on some levels, discussing stuff that seems so obvious and natural in such detail

KatyMac · 13/03/2011 21:25

I kinda see

I only have 1 diagram & 250 words to go

Stay with me.....someone

OP posts:
littleducks · 13/03/2011 21:29

Woohoo! Well done you!

i kinda wish i had diagrams now.... would cheer stuff up!

I am 402 words in and having re read the Qs its 4 pages maximum so i might stop at 3, so only another 1000ish to go

Dh home from work soon which will be a major distraction

KatyMac · 13/03/2011 21:51

142 done

OP posts:
littleducks · 13/03/2011 22:59

are you lot just teasing me because of my assignment? there is no hidden meaning in dh distracting me, he just clomps about and asks weird questions, like "oh, i dont need interupt but do you know...." or "This will only take two secs..."

I have really dull examples like:

We met an English history teacher today.

I need something more interesting

Well done Mrsshrek

KatyMac · 13/03/2011 23:00

Well Done Katy Grin I had a nightmare TMA weekend too and if I had found this forum sooner would have been on here. Have one more TMA to go on this course before my FINAL EMA is submitted to give me my degree.
