Not sure even Nigel Thrift (the 'creator' of non-rep theory) could answer that!
It is vaguely about life.

I had planned to do my core reading this week, with one day left of the week I don't see that happening :|

I've done game theory if that helps (pretending to know what you're talking about lol)

said · 06/03/2011 19:42

I was cockily ahead of muself a few weeks ago. Now, with a deadline looming I have decided, after living here for 4 years, to start stripping the wallpaper off the living room. How's that for displacement activity?

wildstrawberryplace · 07/03/2011 11:42

OK, cleaned my desk, done the laundry, found my lucky pen, had a second coffee....

now to tackle this TMA (last minute as usual, when will I learn?)

webwiz · 07/03/2011 12:17

I am having a break after maanging three hours work this morning. I hope I don't get too excited with myself and end up frittering the afternoon on mumsnet.

This TMA is painful so I will be very glad when I've finished, the theory and method sections are almost done (refs and tweaking of the work count needed) but the critique is a mess and needs some serious sorting outSad.

Wisdom from the family following all my complaining yesterday "You chose to do this course"Hmm

schroeder · 07/03/2011 14:22

That doesn't sound too helpful webwiz! I'm sure you didn't choose the course because it was easy and fun.

I'm having a break too, I managed 600 words this morning, but no time to rest on my laurels.Smile

Mine is due Thursday. I will be submitting it on Wednesday night though, however late that ends up being.

madwomanintheattic · 08/03/2011 04:43

oh my god manatee, now i so desperately want to know about non-rep theory that i am literally champing at the google scholar bit! Grin Angry

how am i ever supposed to get any work done?! eh? eh? you're such a a tease...

tartan - on my first degree, i totally, totally, totally missed the point of the very first essay assignment. i mean totally. even the tutor was apologetic. she said it was very interesting from a personal pov, but hadn't actually included any literary references, or indeed quotes, or indeed anything vaguely representing criticism, and so she was very sorry, but she couldn't really see to giving me much above a 'c' for it. sorry. i was mortified.

but she became my personal tutor for my dissertation in my third year, and i pulled off a first overall. Grin so, totally mullering your first tma is not necessarily a bad thing or a sign of things to come - at least it gives you somewhere to go?! Grin

ManateeEquineOhara · 08/03/2011 07:07

Oh golly, well (despite detecting a hint of sarcasm madwoman!), I suppose I know a little more than being about life! Err...it is going 'beyond representation', taking account of the practices that we do 'unconsciously', like when you walk somewhere and get there and don't remember consciously doing so. I think.

My presentation is not looking particularly good, I just want to get the damned thing out of the way now. I still haven't had a practice run through sounding coherent yet ...worrying. I am actually going to just talk about mumsnet, well, not just, but I am going to get a quote from somewhere in the literature (there must be one somewhere) that geographers should engage with current concerns of the population, and use the number of heated threads on here recently about the measurement programme as justification, therefore I haven't been procrastinating on Mumsnet, I have been researching Grin

ManateeEquineOhara · 08/03/2011 07:17

Drat it, early morning EBSCO search and the literature is failing me. If anyone knows any literature that argues something along the lines of 'geographers should engage with current issues in society' please let me know :)

wildstrawberryplace · 08/03/2011 13:17

Oh crap. I arranged extra time at nursery for DS but I have only got 70 words down so far (1500 due by 12 noon Friday).

I only got a few hours sleep last night as DS was up in the night then up at 6.30am, my brain really feels totally foggy and I can't follow any trains of thought.

What on earth is one supposed to do in this situation? Red bull? Makes me feel awful afterwards is the only thing.

This is my last full childfree day, I really wanted to break the back of it but I genuinely don't know where to start.

It feels like someone scrambled my brains.

madwomanintheattic · 08/03/2011 14:51

no sarcasm, honest! i accidentally found out that i was actually writing a (sort of) human geography paper once, whilst having no intentions of doing so. it just evolved in that direction. Grin i'm no geographer (didn't even take it as an option at 14 for o level!) but i was intrigued to find out it might even be interesting!

i think your idea about using contemporary debate (mumsnet) is fab - as long as it is balanced against policy etc. i've been very wary about using internet sources, but of late mn have been quite liberal in their acceptance of quotation by external outlets, and you aren't publishing it or anything. Grin

schroeder · 08/03/2011 18:39

Well I have written 1500 words yay, trouble is about 400 of them are crap booGrin. Much tweaking and pruning in the morning methinks, I'm working on Thursday, so I really want to get it submitted tomorrow.

OnlyWantsOne · 08/03/2011 18:41

can I just jump in and say ive written 3000 words in 2 days... while looking after my four yr old and 12 week old... now i need a massive thump boost to get my next two essays done by monday

ManateeEquineOhara · 08/03/2011 19:05

Onlywantsone - that is - amazing.

Madwoman - yeah human geography can be fun :) I did my UG diss on fatsites so have a 'wealth of knowledge' about internet research ethics...kind of (if I look through my notes I do anyway.

Damned presentation is now only TWO DAYS AWAY. Oh bloody hell.

wildstrawberryplace · 08/03/2011 19:06

Blimey OnlyWantsOne you're putting me to shame. Well done!

wildstrawberryplace · 09/03/2011 11:38

Something weird has happened. I read through the discourse and made notes on each paragraph before reading the the discussion in the unit book. As I'm writing my notes into essay form, I notice that my argument is more or less the same as the unit book, some of my phrases were exactly the same. And then a certain bit reminded me of Faust so I thought cool I might get some extra marks for that, but then I notice a little further it says "You might like to recall these points when studying Faust" So now I'm having to rewrite otherwise it looks like complete plagiarism. I guess it's good in one sense as it means I'm on message...but it's bizarre at the same time.

A similar thing happened last TMA, my tutor amended my bibliography to include a transcript of an audio CD - but I hadn't even listened to the audio CD, much less read a transcript. It was my own work Confused
