there seems to be alot of threads on here relating to emigrating to oz of recent.

i'm bloody jealous. i've been trying to convince my dw to pack up and go for years but she's a little nervous (quite rightly really. i understand where she's coming from).

i've got the points, i've got the age, i've got hte balls and i want to goooooo! aaargggh!

I am jealous too DC, but as I am heading towards the 'elderly' category, my points will be on the decline.
Apparently hairdressers were on the 'must have' list not so long ago. Maybe I should retrain. I see myself as a Kath or Kim type character living in the 'burbs of Melbourne.

You tease Suzywong! Don't know when we will be back for a holiday - don't know if I dare, we probably wouldn't come back to UK.
It is the long flight with 3 yr old I am most concerned about, otherwise, we would be there tomorrow.

gingerbear, the flight can be counted down hours, my 3 year old was treated like a prince last year on SAS and you KNOW how much fun it is when you get here

i'm just about to turn 30 so my points go down by 5 but i can still do it.

i would want to live rurely anyway, so the bar is lower through another avenue relating to promising to work in the area for something like 3 years. actually oz considers anywhere that isn't a eastern big city or the gold coast as rural so it's pretty accessable.

i know i guy who went over as a barber. he's living in brisbane and having a blast.

it's the sun, sand and beautiful houses that gets me hausfrau. you and my dw are the same in that she doesn't really want to come back to canada either with me for the exact same reasons as yours.

Dh is a Kiwi, although he's rather live in Oz.
I'm always getting asked why we don't live there.

I was there for 2 years and would go like a shot if the chance came up again. It hasn't so we're moving to Brazil instead!

DH (who is Brazilian) just go a job with the Britsh Embassy there. Having worked for the United Nations for the past 10 years and lived all over the place it'll make a change for one of us to be at 'home' and at least DS will finaly get to live in one of his cultural roots countries (half British/half Brazilian, born in Denmark and currently living in Italy)

DC, I know how you feel.

Although you might have a chance of convincing your dw!

Our stumbling block is that we have a child with SN. I spent 6 months in Australia as a teenager and would love to live there. We've got the points, the shortage skills, extra points for various stuff, are all young and healthy. BUT dd has a mild/moderate learning disability and apparently that makes us all totally undesirable. . We could get into NZ - but that doesn't really appeal.

don't you find all these oz threads pure torture though? There seem to be so many and it's a bit like having a sore tooth - can't stop bothering it so I keep looking. Maybe I should take a MN break.

i can't believe that your child's learning disability is even a consideration. that's awful and strikes me as a bit harsh. it's the year 2005 fgs!

have you ever been to NZ though? I haven't but almost every backpacker i met whilst travelling enjoyed it more than oz.. food for thought.

So many people seem to be emigrating, will the last person to leave turn off the light

We are trying to save to emigrate to Canada, but it will be a long time away as I want to finish my degree here and get a few years work experience in a new field under my belt.

But with no maintenance coming in and my ex's debts to pay off first it will probably be at least 5 years

Their immigration people have some bizarrely outdated view of all people with LDs being put into an institution and left to rot at cost to the taxpayer.

Might try to convince dh to holiday in NZ...

dw and i are considering canada next year as a 'tester'. i'm canadian but we've never fancied going back. we thought we should give it a go before ds goes to school to test the waters and decide 1) whether or not we actually like it and stay 2) whether its worth abandoning dw's families support 3) if the whole move goes smoothly whether or not to take the next step and go directly to oz 4) that it's all on a par and we'd prefer to live in the UK.... who knows

i can't watch those shows 'house down under' and 'get a new life' etc etc... it just depresses me. i can't even watch the oz version of changing rooms without getting all !
