Yes, I didn't know about pointing either, though both mine did point a lot, and I fondly remember: "pointing at the ceiling, pointing at the floor, pointing at the window..." that they learnt at nursery.

SG: I agree with Pippi, do what you feel! It does sound like a good balance.

I'm off, going to the theatre with my mum, as it's her birthday.

TheMysticMasseuse · 11/03/2010 20:52

SG: how soon will you start? How part-time is it supposed to be?

I think it sounds potentially very good and opportunities like this don't come around often. However, I would say that a) in my experience, part time work is never as part time as advertised- so for example a job that's pitched at 60% is usually more like 80%- so beware and b) i worry slightly that you've sounded so overwhelmed, physically and emotionally, until so very recently, and although it is brilliant that you are even able to think about work now, you've got to be easy on yourself... my dds got into a vaguely predictable pattern around 5-6 months old but before then things like feeds, naps, sleep etc were quite haphazard. I would have found it really hard to work around that, even with help.

but having said that, in some countries women only get 6-8 weeks mat leave and manage, so it is perfectly feasible.

as ever, just follow your heart...

MM am on facebook and sent you a friend request! How do I find the others-are they all on your friends?
SG take as long as you can I say. I work at home and have done since DS was 6 months old and I wish wish wish I could have had longer.
Having said that if you miss working then ignore me and go for it
Franca have done it!! Come on - you do it too
I have 4 friends so far - how the hell long did it take you to get up to 200 MM??

And now Sputnik and Rosa - am getting good at this- Buch how do I find you? Anyone else? Oh my gawd I need to do some work.........

OP posts:
Bucharest · 12/03/2010 10:42

You find me m'dear by looking for wildhaired harridan with Tourettes syndrome who rushes around being spectacularly foreign.....
Failing that, I'm friends with t'others and have a mini-me aged 2 on my profile pic at the moment. My name is the same as the Gioconda, and my face is just as miserable......

Bucharest · 12/03/2010 10:45

SG (reading backwards as usual) I would definitely consider the working from home while ds is small, because my goodness once they get into school you really don't have a moment.,,,,(which is somehow all the wrong way round!!!!)

Sput- I think my friends son had lactose intolerance in the end....he was a yoghurt and milk-aholic and the nutritionist person said it had all been messing his system up, to that point where he felt unspecifically ill most of the time which caused his tantrums etc.

She has just moved house so is offline at the mo, should be back next week and I'll get in touch with her.

Sputnik · 12/03/2010 10:50

Gotcha Gio!
Buch is the one with the black and white pic of herself as a toddler.

I worked/work from home too, I have very little to do but find it quite difficult tbh. Part of your brain is always occupied with them. Then again I had no one actually looking after them, which would probably make a huge difference. I still think you would need a part of your house where you couldn't even hear what they were doing and a lot of self discipline to work significant hours.

Does sound like a great opportunity though, you should definitely consider it.

Sputnik · 12/03/2010 10:51

X post there Buch, thanks.

BananaGio · 12/03/2010 10:51

lol Buch, got you

SG, I went back to work when DS was 5.5 months, 2 days from home, 2 in the office. If I could have done mainly from home, I would have been happier, especially after having had DD and 13 months off with her. I found tha tonce ds was 18 months, he bacame more demanding, and so went to nursery during the mornings as not so easy when you have to work "core hours", as I also had to take phonecalls etc (current job, though, is a lot more flexible, i wouldn't have needed nursery). so I think if you don't have tight deadlines, can prepare your reports etc when he's sleeping with the occasional meeting, then it's fine. if you have to be "on call" 9-5, it'd be more difficult (not easy to have a phone convo when you have a 12 mo tantruming in the background).

sput, I never really thought about the pointing, I can't really remember DS doing it, DD definetly more, boh. and he was a bit slower i guess with his speech, though that improved dramatically with nursery, and I just put it down to the 2 languages thing and then I know my DB was very slow in that respect too.

gio, I'm on FB too, if you check on buch/pippi/rosa - I'm a precious stone .

Sputnik · 12/03/2010 12:18

All these non pointing children are very reassuring!

Excess weight from 2 babies is another reason why I have an out of date photo on FB!

How's the running going Gio?
I've managed to keep up more or less with the cross-trainer, until last week anyway. Will be getting back on it soon. I also started doing Atkins, I was pretty sceptical and tbh usually crap with diets but bloody hell I lost 3kg in a week. Probably lots was water but pretty impressive anyway and very motivating. Then this thing with DS blew up and I couldn't face thinking about how many carbs I was eating too so have slackened up a bit, but it has killed my desire to snack and eat lots of carbs, so will see how I go from here.

BananaGio · 12/03/2010 12:48

mmmm running. Well first I had sinusitis and then I had stomach bug and it's been raining...........
Starting on Monday again!
Sput I did Atkins once when had to lose weight v quick for brothers wedding. Does work but couldnt face meat for months after!
Thinking about it my DS didn't really point as well. Plus he has been slow to speak. I have noticed all his little girl bilingual friends are way ahead of him and other boy ones.
Camo sent a request.

OP posts:
Sputnik · 12/03/2010 13:00

Well I don't eat meat at all so it is possible without!
I can't really put DS's problem down to being bilingual, at home and with DH's family we speak 100% english and apart from a few months last year when he went to the nursery he's had very little exposure to Italian.

Rosa · 12/03/2010 13:02

Got you Gio .....
Atkins it does work in short term but does it work in the long ? Exercise I should do some but can't be faffed to be honest...

Sputnik · 12/03/2010 13:25

I really exercise is the key in the long term. And good habits like not snacking.

BananaGio · 12/03/2010 13:36

and not eating a bowl of pasta that would serve 2 people as I have just done

Francagoestohollywood · 12/03/2010 13:57

I'd join you on facebook, but I've no idea where to find you! Will I find you through MM?

Francagoestohollywood · 12/03/2010 14:02

Ooooh my goodness, I've just signed and already found pippi and mm !

BananaGio · 12/03/2010 14:11

lol Franca- you've caved into the pressure as I did. you can find me through Pippi. i am the one with pic of me and ds, first name is the English longer version of the non fruit bit of my MN name and surname is (as everyone still tells me) "come Rossi in Italiano vero!"

OP posts:
Francagoestohollywood · 12/03/2010 14:23
