Would you say a size 14 is far or thin?

I lost four and a half stone and went from a size 22 to a size 14 (I'm 5 foot 10) and felt quite happy and slim after that. But recently I've read/heard some comments which suggest that a size 14 is definitely not widely regarded as slim. One was Patrick Kielty mocking Abi Tittmus on Celebrity Love Island, the other was a comment by Liz Hurley about how large women shouldn't wear tight-fitting clothes, and in the Mirror they interviewed a woman who was a size 14 and felt that she was one of the women Liz Hurley was talking about.

What do you all think?

katierocket · 05/07/2005 09:10

you look really lovely emkana. HOnestly. Certainly not fat.

Lizzylou · 05/07/2005 09:12

YOu look great! Just right, I'd say....

berolina · 05/07/2005 09:28

you look great.
wow - well done on your weight loss!
14 sounds just right for someone your height. i'm a 10, sometimes 8 up top (well, was pre-pg - still need to shift some from my middle) but I'm 5'1.

handlemecarefully · 05/07/2005 09:39

Emkana - right now I would kill for your figure!

tortoiseshell · 05/07/2005 09:50

emkana, you look fantastic. Have a look at this article which makes interesting reading - suggests that size 14 is actually the optimum size for women.

Lio · 05/07/2005 09:53

I read an article by a journalist who said that Patrick Kielty has a face that is asking to be smacked even before he opens his mouth. Patrick Kielty probably disagrees.

I disagree with him thinking that size 14 is a bit fat.

ninah · 05/07/2005 09:53

I think you are slim and look great

emkana · 05/07/2005 09:54

Thank you all.

I wouldn't take too much notice of Liz Hurley; she once said that she would rather kill herself than be the same size as Marilyn Monroe was.

I know who I think had the sexier figure.

biglips · 05/07/2005 10:09

as you are 5' 10", size 14 is slim, as im size 14 too and 5'8" so i look and feel slim too

Slink · 05/07/2005 10:16

Size 14 is the normal sze for women i think....... Liv tyler is a 14, Drew barrymore is a 14, many stars are and they look great.... i a 5"7 and a size 14 and feel great better than i did when i was a size 10 before dd,
A guy i worked with said if his wife got fat (size 14) he would leave he told me this while i was pg... he also said if she was in an accident and in a wheelchair he would leave her........ hence she got fed up left him one day.....

handlemecarefully · 05/07/2005 10:36

WWB - she really said that? - what a silly superficial cow!

Listmaker · 05/07/2005 10:36

When I was young and slim I thought 14 was HUGE but then I got really big (size 18/20) and slimmed back to a 14 and felt great! So as others have said it's all relative!

It does depend on height. But 14 isn't thin but it's 'normal' and healthy and I'd love to be back there again (have gone back up to an 18 again but am going back down again!!).

People like Liz Hurley are just permanently starving and I'm not prepared to live like that!

I was on friends reunited dating site and you have to put your build. There were lots of comments in the 'daters' diaries' from men saying size 12 is not slim, it's curvy etc etc. I was appalled. Some of these men were so critical. I had put curvy for myself but decided I'd better upgrade to cuddly because I didn't want someone expected a size 10 person as curvy! Ridiculous I thought and there were many arguments on there about it and men's unrealistic expectations for 'real' women.

TinyGang · 05/07/2005 10:42

I think you look great too and well done for losing the weight! 14 is not fat at 5'10" - just right I'd say.

I am the same height and feel more comfortable at a size 14 but am more of a 16(+) just now and feel it doesn't suit me so well, but I'm not going to get in a big stew over it. My body has given me three gorgeous children over the last 6 years-I am willing to accept that in doing so I may have changed shape/weight a bit.

Liz Hurley, Posh etc all live in tv land. They have the time and money to be obsessive and they can have the effect of making us mere mortals feel we're doing it all wrong by being critical of more curvy shapes. I love eating and drinking with my friends and family - who wants to sit there with 5 raisins and a glass of water having cooked a lovely meal for everyone else to enjoy? Or dash off to the gym 10 minutes after giving birth. Torture!

teeavee · 05/07/2005 10:51

Liz Hurley - who cares what she says? She's never made a good film, can't act for peanuts, and has absolutely no taste in clothes herself, if you ask me.

Here in France, I see a lot of women around that I would consider to be too thin - those who are stil a size 8 or 10 when they are over 60 actually look worse to me, because there's not enough flesh to smooth out the wrinkles!!!! A size 14 is healthy for 5'10", and, more importantly, it's the size at which you feel good. that's all that counts.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2005 10:56

I think it's average. I was a 14 (5'7") for years and years and years and was pretty happy - could have done with it being a less flabby 14 though

Am now a 10-12 but could still do with it being less flabby so I'm still not 100% happy
