Rosa gags at the thought of fresh ginger - I used to love it but after second pg having it in hot water to stop nausea . Mind you I did put it in ginger cake and that was good but had to have the oven on for 2 hrs or something.
I must go and do something but this is the first time ever that MRosa has been amusing herself - ok so she has got the phone , remote control, and all the battery chargers out !!!!!

Buch your tales are always the funniest!!!

Rosa Dd1 has got the same problem. I'll send her to the one she'd rather go. One is in a hall and of a boy she's not best friend with, the other is to watch a play for one of her good friend. No idea about father's occupation 0 a very italian thing. Mind you considering your mortgage needs I will def send her to the bank manager's dd with a huge present ! I will also send dh to casually chat with the girl's father.

Thanks for the link to the names thread: very topical here! DH has stipulated that we may not discuss names with others until we have met the baby and found out whether it is a boy or a girl. The two of us have obviously been discussing the matter for a few months and have settled on having an Italian first name, an English second name and what we fancy as a third (surname will be English). Pretty much everyone in my family has Maria somewhere in their name (men and women) but DH has vetoed it, particularly for boys- which is a shame as I have thought for years that I would like my DD to be called Maria Amelia or Maria Ludovica (which, as MM says on the other thread, would probably turn into Amelia or Ludovica). And Ludovico for a boy would be my absolute favourite, but that's been vetoed too (hence having leave to disclose it).

So now we are fairly settled on names 1 and 2 for boys and girls (though for the latter two contenders are fairly close) and the question is for the third. I have toyed with the idea of starting a name thread but, having seen some others, have given up. However, in the more secluded environment of LI, if you have any suggestions for names that work in both languages, please go ahead.

Like many here, DH is fascinated by Idea Socialista (and does understand the cultural background) but we will not be going for that, though he has suggested it a number of times when we have failed to agree. Oddly the English names were much easier to come up with (we both like fairly traditional ones), it is the the Italian ones that I like that he keeps vetoing...

The Indian in San Nazario in Brolo would have been the one I would have suggested- except I have no idea what it is like these days. I used to live not far from there as student who was pathologically unable to cook, so often went there on a Sunday when the uni cafeteria was shut... They did a lovely chicken with almond and yoghurt...

Camo: we too have the curtain problem. We have been in this house nearly three years and only managed to decide on curtains in November. Fitter for the curtain pole is finally turning up tomorrow- but what a saga. I cannot get to grips with curtain language and find the subject deeply boring, wish we could just have stained glass or persiane and not bother, but sadly house is too young and there isn't enough sun. Just to say that I sympathise thoroughly with your plight. We have also found a very nice lady to make our curtains, so shout if you would like a name.

SPUTNIK! Have emailed you, 4 & 5 have just arrived !

SG: Maria is knowing a revamp, at least among the milanese middle class.
Names we had considered for dd were: Lidia (Lidia is Natalia Ginzburg's mother, whose personality I loved), Lucia (but we soon decided it was a bit twee for us), Caterina and Emma.
Names I also love are: Zoe, Sara, Marta, Sofia (very popular in Italy).

Boys are quite difficult. I still like Mario, but people tend to laugh when I say it ...
I like Pietro (v. popular), Guido, Francesco, Lorenzo (very popular).

Sputnik · 21/01/2010 15:56

Great Franca! Enjoy

I really love Lidia too, DS might have been that if he was a girl, and it hadn't been too close to DD's name. Shame your favourite name was vetoed, there was a girl in DD's old school called Maria Sole which raised a few eyebrows but I thought was quite nice.
We did well with DD's name as it's an arabic name which works in english and italian too. We didn't manage it for DS unfortunately, boys names seem much harder tbh, and we were lucky to agree on anything.

Francagoestohollywood · 21/01/2010 16:00

Oh Maria Sole I like (very famiglia Agnelli name )

Francagoestohollywood · 21/01/2010 16:01

mmmm now it occurs to me that I don't know your dc's names sput (nosey)

Rosa · 21/01/2010 18:55

DD1 was decided before we even knew she was a girl. Ok so she is named after my FIL but we loved the name it has the english spelling and her second name is very traditional english now having a come back but it stuck..She might hate me later for it.
MR was Emma ( now too many over here),Susannah,Carolina,Amelia ( so we compromised !) Her second name as she is the last grandchild and they are all girls we gave her my surname ( now that is also having a come back .....) We are laughing about it as we gave the second 'traditional names' as we had reasons behind them both and now they are both having a huge come back in the name tables!
If they were boys I liked Sebastiano,Luke,Thomas but dh wasn't that convinced.

There is an Anna Sveva in my class which was new to me and I know of a baby Maria Sole....

Francagoestohollywood · 21/01/2010 20:40

I feel so ill I can't even manage to watch tv... boohoooooooo

Anna Sveva, that's an unusual combo.

Sputnik · 21/01/2010 20:47

Go to bed, Franca!
No big secret about my DC's names I suppose, they are Leila and Theo, both of which seem to have become quite popular. Theo is a problem for Italians so he gets Teo, which I like too.

Francagoestohollywood · 21/01/2010 20:51

Oh lovely names! Gosh LI has great tastes in names, perhaps we should start counseling...

You are right of course, I should go to bed, but I've just finished the remains of the day (great book) and I don't have anything to read...

AllQuietOnThePippisFront · 21/01/2010 21:08

I am deeply shocked at this liking of Idea Socialist ... for as much as I might like the ideology I'd be if ever I'd met somebody with this name (no offense)!

Surprising how popular Emma is... 'twas never heard of in my times.

In my youth I new a Maria Stella.

Sputnik · 21/01/2010 21:48

DH seriously wanted to call DS Neutrino
And they say pregnancy does strange things to women

AllQuietOnThePippisFront · 21/01/2010 21:50

Neutrino is quite cute actually, but just for a baby. Imagine a grown up man of some importance caled Neutrino ROFL!!! If ever I get a tadpole for the girls I'll call it Neutrino, not that this is what your Dh would want to hear I bet.

Sputnik · 21/01/2010 21:51

On the strength of the fact DS moved around a lot in utero.
Nutter.

Sputnik · 21/01/2010 21:56

I am sure he would be pleased his choice was commemorated somehow! I would sound utterly ridiculous with his surname too, and inevitably get shortened to Newt (as in Newt Gingrich), not good.

Francagoestohollywood · 22/01/2010 10:02

Neutrino is another good one!!!

Sputnik · 22/01/2010 11:07

DH fancies himself as a particle physicist
It could have been worse. Quark, Strangeness or Charm, for example.

Hope you're feeling better today.

Francagoestohollywood · 22/01/2010 11:12

It could have been Neutrino and Elettra (like Marconi's daughter)

Less snot but awful headache and very weak. Pah!

AllQuietOnThePippisFront · 22/01/2010 12:37

Elettra I really really like.

Franca glad you are feeling a bit better.

Rosa · 22/01/2010 12:45

Hope the head gets better soon.
DD has a cold mainly runny nose but she has a party this pm and insists she is fine. bordering on a febbre but not yet . WIll see whan she wakes up but it is mega cold here so I am not convinced it is a house one so will be tranquilla ish...That means MRosa will get it in the next 48 hrs so yet another cancellation for her vaccinations next week !
Not sure about Newt to be honest!

OP posts:
Francagoestohollywood · 22/01/2010 21:07

Rosa, did you go to the party?

I'm feeling better tonight, hopefully it's over!

Rosa · 23/01/2010 09:31

Glad you are feeling better
