Where are you????

OP posts:
JavierBardem · 08/11/2009 12:44

Camo, blimey! You need to take some time off and stay in bed!!!!! Hope you can!

TheMysticMasseuse · 08/11/2009 14:33

camo, poor you, sounds truly horrendous!!!!

Penthesileia · 08/11/2009 14:42

Camo, poverina. Can DH look after your LOs? You must rest.

MM - not going to reply on your thread, as am no SAHM, but if I were in your position, I would get a joint bank account; work out as closely as possible how much the necessary outgoings are (mortgage, food, utilities, savings for hols, general savings, etc - obv. this will be a rough figure as food bills vary, etc.), then divide the remainder of your DH's salary 3 ways: his, yours, and the DC. That way you won't end up spending your money on the kids and wind up with less for yourself; this also acknowledges that kids are an expense - but one which is more likely to happen on your watch than his (e.g. playgroups, trips to the zoo, etc). I would have to have a fixed sum in my mind available each month to feel comfortable. I would definitely not want to "ask" for money as I want to spend it, IYSWIM. It may take a couple of months of life out in CH before you figure out the sums for this, of course.

Camomilla · 08/11/2009 15:52

thanks, we're both pretty knackered, between me, then ds, than taking dd twice to hospital, then dp, now me again, we've had 3 really ill weeks. looking forward to eating hopefully tonight boiled potatoes )

MM, I've always been the higher earner, and DP got made redundant twice, once when I was pg with DS and earlier this year. before he worked on the house, now it's all linked to childcare, so I don't see me working more than him or viceversa iykwim. mine/his money, is our money
penthe's suggestion is very good. we are going to do something similar when we get the chance to go to the bank on our own.

gio71 · 08/11/2009 19:36

Camo poor you!! I hope this marks the end of your illnesses for a while so you have a chance to build up again. Take care of yourself and lie on the sofa as much as dcs allow.
MM like Camo I have always been the highest earner and we have had 2 periods- once when we were in the UK and then when we moved back here when dp wasn't working and so I was sole breadwinner. I think Penthe's advice is good based on our experiences, albeit the other way round. The times at the beginning when dp had to ask me for money could be quite difficult, took adjustment on my part if am honest (was pre ds as well) and he felt like he was cap in hand all the time. Then we changed it so I transferred a set amount every month to him and it was fine. I just saw it as a standard outgoing and dp felt like he was able to manage the money he had, choose what to spend it on, budget etc. Also don't write off the possibility that opportunities may present themselves that you have no idea about at the moment when you are there and settled. I was officially on UK mat leave when I moved over here but I knew I wasn't going back. I gave up a lucrative and successful career to follow dp here and was due a promotion to senior manager. I had ZERO idea of what I could do here but after promising dp for years I would move back here I thought if I didnt do it with a bit of a cushion from mat leave then I never would. I had no hope I would find anything and it was by accident when I was surfing the net while bf-ing one night that I came across my current opportunity, which is in the same field I was in before but freelance and working from home. If anyone had suggested to me before moving I could find something like this I would have laughed in their faces as my industry is not known for it's flexibility or freelance posts. I would not have found the opportunity if I had been in the UK as wouldn't have been on the ex pat website i found it on. Anyway this is become a very waffly post so I will go and give someone else a chance to talk

TheMysticMasseuse · 08/11/2009 19:47

that sounds fab Gio and yes i am doing all i can to look for work, though how much networking i'll be able to do at the playground is unclear

anyway thanks, really, really, for all your sensible tips and esp for listening to me i am such a whiney bore sometimes.

gio71 · 08/11/2009 19:55

You have probably already seen it but just incase you haven't - this (Rome equivalent for me) was a massive help to me when first moved, for general info, baby groups and also met a really good friend (in RL now) via the forum

gio71 · 08/11/2009 19:57

PS you are not a whiney bore . You are facing a massive change.Totally understandable, been there!

PippiHasALifeOfRiley · 08/11/2009 21:38

Yes not a bore at all. If it was me going through such a massive life change I'd be moaning all the time. I already do and I am well settled.

PippiHasALifeOfRiley · 08/11/2009 21:40

Camo how are you now?

Penthe your way is def the best way to arrange finances.

Francasaysrelax · 09/11/2009 09:58

Yo! (the wire emoticon. Btw, McNulty is a bit of a womanizer, then?)

Camo, I hope you feel better soon, you poor thing. Hope you are having a sofa day.

Tantik has it snowed? .

MM sorry you are feeling so low. And don't worry about moaning. As Gio said you are facing huge changes in your life, so you are deffo allowed to moan as much as you wish . I agree with everything that's been said and with Gio that opportunities might arise when you least expect them to.

Pippi: Videocracy. No, I haven't seen it. I've read about it, I don't think it'd have told me things I didn't already know. Also, sadly I can't go to the movies as much as I'd like.

Male friends. I've always had male friends, and have always spent lots of time with them, even going on holiday etc. I've always had partners who were totally fine with it and it's been normal in my circles of friends to spend time with whoever you want.
I've already seen threads like yours on mn, and they are always controversial.

Scamy is def not a fascist, have you seen him interviewed for the movie he made with costa gravas?

La meglio gioventu' is really good. I've been lookinng to buy the dvd for ages and I can't find them.

JavierBardem · 09/11/2009 10:26

Franca, the guy went to MISS ITALY!!!! I bet he didn't say that to C. Gravas..

Seriously, I din't realise Gravas was still alive, must check his films on dvds...

Are there any cinemas open during the day? It is going to be my treat as soon as I feel better to go to the movies during the day, during the week....I love it.

Francasaysrelax · 09/11/2009 10:29

Yes, I still can't get round that. But doesn't mean he is a fascist. He was invited because (and that's ) one of the winners (the miss cinema one) also won the entrance to the centro sperimentale cinematografico, which (allegedly) he did.. and he obviously is a quite popular testimonial for the school... boh !

JavierBardem · 09/11/2009 10:47

I just cannot look at him without thinking "miss italy, uomini porci, etc". I am sure he did the thing for perfectly honourable reasons, but it just looks BAD.

JavierBardem · 09/11/2009 11:00

And of course a true comrade would have been throwing bombs at the judges, the misses, etc. By being there he condones it, supports it, perpetrates it.

The real Javier, now, he is a true comrade (with a nose like that).

JavierBardem · 09/11/2009 11:04

Not sure if "perpetrate" is the right word

Francasaysrelax · 09/11/2009 11:24

No one has ever bothered throwing bombs at miss italia, not even in 1968

Btw, I dunno. I was a bit at seeing him there, given that he does very few appearances on tv and quite selected ones. Boh!

JavierBardem · 09/11/2009 11:27

lol at "selected ones"...
we have to get buch to ask...

Francasaysrelax · 09/11/2009 11:29

. Like Fazio !

Yes, we need bucharest.

JavierBardem · 09/11/2009 11:31

Who is Fazio?

Francasaysrelax · 09/11/2009 11:38

Fabio Fazio.
He has a program on Rai3 called Che tempo fa, where he interviews people, from nobel prize winners to scamy... The program goes very well in terms of audience, but is always under scrutiny by the current government, as considered too left wing

At the moment the programs targeted by the government are: Annozero (Santoro, and they didn't want to renew Travaglio's contract ), Ballaro', Che tempo fa and Parla con me (serena dandini). All the progs are on rai3 except for santoro. Rai3 is the only channel or rai which is not losing telespettatori

JavierBardem · 09/11/2009 11:41

Does anybody know if to teach Italian in an Italian primary school one needs some sort of qualification? Would a degree plus some experience be sufficient? I am thinking of volunteering to teach Italian at a local school, anyone know?

PippiHasALifeOfRiley · 09/11/2009 11:44

Wow JB that is great!! Did they ask you or are you going to ask? That's what I wanted to do.

No idea what you need in Italy.

JavierBardem · 09/11/2009 11:46

Oh, thank you franca, I ddin't know.

I like Annozero, I think Santoro for an Italian presenter is good, he seems sincere and is not afraid of saying his opinion, but!!!! He is not very bright is he? I always wish they had more of a Paxman or even a Dimbleby, he has sometimes the opportunity to ask really probing questions, instead he often chooses to let people waffle on whilst saying nothing, instead of interrupting them and making them actually say something meaningful...

Francasaysrelax · 09/11/2009 11:46

Is there an Italian primary school around you? Or is it a normal English primary where italian is taught as an extracurricular activity?

You need a special degree to teach in Italian primary schools nowadays.
