Dishwashers...which one?

just been reading the archived thread on Dishwashers... and thought i might try and resurrect...as it was started a while ago... plus wanted to ask...

Rhiannon... did you ever get a new one.???

plus... does everyone still recommend a Bosch... and if so what model???

plus... dh and i have this ongoing 'debate' he would like another slimline dishwasher (we have a slimline now) as they are easy fill... and thus puts the wash everynight just before we go to bed...me?

i think a full size... cos i basically think we'll be able to put more stuff in... e.g when friends come over for dinner etc... and basically want a family sized dishwasher...

what do you all think! - if it comes out on the full sized opinion... i shall print this thread off and shove it under his nose!!!! ha! ha!

...bearing in mind we have one dd (23months) at the mo and will eventually have more (when we get round to it! )

looking forward to the contributions on this lovely bank holiday monday morning... surely i should be in the garden and not being all nerdy on the computer....!!!!

Bea, I'm going to vote for a full size one just so you can shove this thread under dh's nose I don't think it takes that long to fill (and there are only 3 of us) but you do need to make sure you have plenty of dishes so you still have clean plates even if the dishwasher is nearly full but not yet on IYSWIM.

I've got a slimline Bosch (I'd have a bigger one, but couldn't fit it in the kitchen). I bought it last June to replace an earlier model, but I was quite disappointed with the new one.

Firstly, the cutlery holder is a stupid, fiddly shape that kept falling over (fortunately I'd saved the one from the old model, it doesn't fit that well, but I jam it in).

Secondly, the plate-holding prongs are too close together, so plates often touch and don't get properly cleaned.

Thirdly - and most importantly - I bought the standard model without the 'intensive' wash, and I find that because it's all eco-b**y-friendly, the water doesn't heat up enough to actually clean your stuff particularly well. My mother's got a full-size, more fully-featured model, and to get decent cleaning she has to run it on 'intensive' all the time.

Big thumbs-down for Bosch from me - and I'm a 10-year Bosch fan...

Bosch full size one for me. There's 6 of us and it's very rare I can't fit it all in at once. It's extremely quiet too. Had an Indesit before this (renamed by us Indesh*t) and it was replaced once then broke for good all inside a year.

We've got an Indesit which we've had for 18 months and it's terrible. Don't get one. I was skulking around John Lewis the other day eyeing up potential replacements. Moral of this story, never be swayed by the cheapest in the shop, even if it is silver...

Ive got a full size AEG (a 'mechanical one' - ie it doesnt have digital display - cheaper) and its pretty good, the quick wash seems to do most of my washing up and it only takes 34 mins - its not dry when you open it but I find it quicker to dry myself. We bought it from this site - they were very quick. It is quiet too.

We had an indesit for 7 years and it only broke once (when still under guarantee). It still works but is presently languishing in the garage. Now we have a smeg fully integrated state of the art version and it breaks my glassware, does not have enough height for my plates but does look unobtrusively beautiful.

If you can have a full sized one I would certainly go for that

Definitely full-sized. We put ours on once a day, but at the weekend had guests staying, and it just went on more often - it makes entertaining so easy.

We've only had a d/w 9 months, and I still worship it. Am currently recommending all pregnant friends to put the baby to sleep in a box, buy s/h clothes, whatever, but BUY A DISHWASHER - it has made a huge difference to us. Can't believe I put it off so long. (Ours are 4 and 6 now).

Definately second the full size dishwasher, there are four of use and it is on at least once a day.

We had a Smeg for five years but I wasn't terribly impressed as the pump went on it twice (first time under guarantee thankfully). We have recently replaced it with a Meile (ex-display so it wasn't much more than a Bosch) and at the moment I am very happy with it. The only thing I don't like it the cutlery arrangement, it doesn't have a basket in the bottom for the cutlery but has an extra pull out drawer at the top of the machine for the cutlery which is fiddly although it is supposed to give you an extra 11% space in your dishwasher. An extremely quiet machine though and apparently Meile d/washers are rigerously tested to last a very long time (fingers crossed )!

We've had a Zanussi for the last 8 years and never had a fault. It does a great job of cleaning - even the dirty saucepans that dh stacks in it without rinsing. We also put our crystal and bone china in it - how lazy is that?

We've got a full sized whirlpool one that's triple A rated and it's the best thing ever, cleans really well and is dead quiet. usually put it on every other day but if we have "guests" we can fit everything we've used for a 3 course dinner in it in one go.

full size - we have a seimens ( recommended to our landlord by repair company - certainly nowhere near the most expensive but apparently the most reliable.) and it is brilliant. My place back in aus has a whirlpool and has also been no problem.

hoorah! lots of votes for a full size on! ha! ha! dh will have to finally silenced!... still not sure what to go for though!!!

keep those opinions coming!!!!... still trying to decide!!!!.... but then again i'm sure the more information you get the harder your decision becomes!!!!

I have a 3 year old Bosch which is brilliant as long as I always put it on intensive.

Had a Siemans before and it never seemed to get everything clean even on intensive.

So my vote is a full sized Bosch

We've got a full-sized Miele too. Very quiet. I don't have a problem with the cutlery tray- unloading you just pull out the tray & take it to the drawer. Just have to be careful where we put the dinner plates because they can stop the rinser arm from spinning.

Ours is a G 646 SC (if that means anything). Some of the other models don't have as many programmes. My only bug bear is the little red lights telling you you're out of salt or rinseaid if you're using the 3-in-1 tablets.

Bought ours to match our Miele washing machine (ain't we posh )

We now have a full size Miele and it's fantastic. I like the cutlery arrangement as it always gets it very clean and it means more room overall. Prior to that we had a Siemens which was an unmitigated disaster. It was so sensitive that you had to clean out the filters all the time or it just wouldn't get things clean. It broke down three times within months and on the third occassion we chucked it away even though it was less than 18 months old.

We have had a full-size Bosch for 3 years and are extremely happy with it. Here is a summary:

  1. extremely quiet
  2. simple to use, roomy
  3. takes a VERY long time to wash/dry - fine with us because we do 1 cycle per day, at most. If you are doing more than that, you will find it very slow
  4. some people have complained that it doesn't wash plastic well, but I find it does a fine job.

By the way, when we did the research, our friends said fabulous things about the Miele, but the Miele was extremely expensive, so we just looked at Bosch. Miele may be better if you can afford it.

My beloved Zanussi has just died after nearly 8 years of sterling service.

It's not getting water into it, I've checked the filters, water inlet hose & filter etc but nothing is obviously wrong. It still sounds as if water is being drawn into it ie the pump sounds as if it is working but I suspect it can't be as I can't see what else can be wrong.

Do I leg it around to Comet first thing in the morning and look at Bosch/Miele etc or risk a repair call out which may cost more than a new one ?
