francagoestohollywood · 24/09/2009 12:58

I don't know why i wrote of course not.

gio71 · 24/09/2009 13:09

was ok when picked him up and teacher said he was a bit better today apart from some little git biting his thumb!
mcloud the teacher he has now was his permanent one who was off due to a broken arm. We didnt meet her before the summer for same reason (perhaps they keep her hidden away til you have started and it's too late....). He had 2 substitutes in 1.5 week plus one day on Tues with no subsitute when they mixed 2 classes together and then his permanent teacher since yesterday! Not good is it really!
lol at babywalkers and Canada-think issue is when parents treat them as childminders!
Pippi glad things are going well.
Bloody zanzare di merda! We are plagued with them at the moment, worse than height of summer!

francagoestohollywood · 24/09/2009 13:14

Yes, we have zanzare di merda here as well and more incazzate than this summer!

Has he got 1 teacher btw? There should be a few hrs of "compresenza" with another teacher.

Sputnik · 24/09/2009 13:16

The scuola materna where I fist sent DD didn't even have a teacher at first! I moved her.
We are off to Ischia for a long weekend, hope it doesn't rain!

francagoestohollywood · 24/09/2009 13:17

Envy Envy Envy

Rosa · 24/09/2009 13:20

EUro 15 later ... we are the proud owner of 2 books . They are basically colouring books with things like colour all the apples red and the trees brown. Colour the girl under the slide in green that kind of thing. I got dd some similar ones in Dimetra for the summer . One of them is for religione however that she has once a week.....!
Meeting was interesting I was the one that asked lots of questions ( and I don't care!) re food - they are going to do a table for the piccoli on what they have eaten and stick it up. A Menu has been posted on the board near our class room . I also asked about fighting etc and what they do - IN theory I liked teh answers. There were some doppia faccia mamme ...Il mio Alvise non graffia mai kind of thing - I said with my very British tone - It doesn't matter who does the hitting as long as they are made to see it is wrong and told to say scusa ( every circumstance is different of course ) SUore capo I think approved !!!
MAde teh cake last night am I am sooo pleased with it was up til 01.00 will get dh to take pics...... It is steamy today hope it doesn't melt !
Gio I agree I would ask the maestra for more inserimento time or how you / she can help . Poor thing bit much all this change of teachers right at the start ...not good.
Baby walkers - I personally don't like them that much but I have put dd1 in one in the past and kept it fissa as I have too many corners - plus she was in it for about 10 mins !!!
Zanzare they are monsters here as well kids going to party this pm coperte in Vape tissues.

francagoestohollywood · 24/09/2009 13:24

Brava Rosa !!!!! !!!! Well said. Lol at my alvise non graffia mai !

I want to see the pics of your cakes too, btw. Can I??? Did you manage to find the bracciali di caramelle? If not, what did you do instead?

francagoestohollywood · 24/09/2009 13:24

see, I forgot the pleeeeeeease! (getting too italian, sorry)

CJCregg · 24/09/2009 14:54

Thanks again for being so welcoming, everyone. Heartbroken that no-one knows the washing powder, though! Time to get a life.

Maybe when I go to Venice I can track it down - can just see that going down really well with DP: so here we are for our romantic weekend, do you mind if I just nip into every launderette I see and ask about the washing powder?

Am fascinated by your Italian lives. Are you there for good? Married to Italians? What do you miss about the UK (if anything!)?

minervaitalica · 24/09/2009 16:23

Lol at Alvise (is this name the Italian answer to Henriettas and Archiebalds?) -he should probably get together with Gigliola.

Gio 71 - sorry to hear re: the maestra. But if DS had inserimento with someone and now has another teacher, chances are that he would be upset even if the new teacher was "Mary Poppins". I suppose it is a wait and see but I know I would also feel awful with the tears etc - sending lots of positive vibes from the North East!!!!

I gave half of the fig "produce" away today btw... And my mum has promised to other half to God knows whom. I get to keep the fig tart though (not for long ). BTW, I love food and I love cooking, and I make a mean frico and Japanese noodle soup. But my true love is baking.

CJCregg, I am actually Italian, married to a Cornishman I met at uni in the UK, living in Northern Italy after spending the last 10 yrs in London. Whether we are here for good depends on the work situation tbh. Italy is a great place to live, but a lousy one to work unfortunately (even if perhaps we are better off than most up here).

francagoestohollywood · 24/09/2009 18:26

Minerva, I'm impressed by your cooking skills!

CJ I'm Italian, married to an Italian. We lived in the UK for yrs (me 8 yrs, dh 12 or 13 I can't remember!) and we moved back to Italy 1 year and a half ago.
What I miss about England:

  • the few friends I had there
  • our house
  • sunny days (not as many as I wished for!)
  • a good fry up
  • reading the guardian on sat mornings.
  • a good curry
  • a sense that the State doesn't take the piss!

What I love about Italy:

  • the easiness of human relationships. It is easy to become casual friends, people like to chat etc.
  • the weather
-the fact that we now live close to family and many, many good friends.
  • the sea
  • the food, that's a cliche!!!

What I hate: the current government, illegality, Italians getting ruder by the day

What about you cj? What attracts you to Italy?

McCloudsextoy · 24/09/2009 19:39

Oh, I guess the argument is that bwalkers cause more injuries to babies than other type of equipment, they stop them exploring which is what they are meant to do (pita i know), may affect their mental development, it is too easy for the most reasonable of parent to forget the baby is in the bloody thing, so immagine what the unreasonable parent would do. I don't see why they exist tbh. I think you are not even meant to leave the baby alone in a room in the bwalker which totally defeats the purpose. I love playpens though. . If they ban them I will be in the street to demonstrate.

Penthesileia · 24/09/2009 20:18

Rosa, I've been meaning to say for ages, but your Nutella trick finally prompted me: you sound like an effing fierce cook. Wow. I totally want to eat your food!

FWIW, franca, I liked the "of course not" - I could hear the tone and everything.

Bucharest - what the hell is happening at that school? Crazy!

CJ - hi! I'm Scottish, married to an Italian, living in the UK. I like lots of things about Italy (the food - cliche of course - the weather, the sea, the beautiful places you can visit, the nice books that you can find, etc) - and can generally ignore the bad, although poor DH can't and gets terribly distressed at each new horror from Berlusca; but the thing I love most is leftist Italian intellectuals and a certain strand of left-leaning Italian public discourse. So eloquent, erudite, etc. My favourite academic friends are Italian. Love long long chats into the night about politics, history, etc etc.

Gio - sorry DS isn't happy still.

Well, we had a horrid night last night: poor DD threw up 8 times! She seems ok now, fingers crossed.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 24/09/2009 20:51

Oh Penthe poor DD. Is she all right now? Has she been drinking ok? We had to take DD1 to hosp once because she was dehidrated as she wasn;t keeping anything in.

Rosa yes I meant to say to you earlier YOU ARE THE BEST COOK EVER, so creative and original and simple. If I didn't despise Nigella so much I'd say you are the next one . Will steal some ideas, especially the nutella one. Bet all the italian mums are and when they see your creation.

CJ I am an italian in London. Have been here for many years and love almost everything about it (admittedly the english summer, or the lack of it, does sometimes distress me and makes me long for home). I love being in italy as a tourist, don't think I'd like to live there though. When I go I gorge on the food, the weather, my faithfull childhood/school friends and my great mum; I do miss her here especially now with the dds. I also find that it is very easy to make friends in the uk so I am well settled.

Babywalker: not pro not against. I have used it with dd2 because she wanted to go explore and wasn't able to, so gave her a way to be mobile and me a break. and as you have seen mcc it didn't hinder her explorations; dd1 on the other hand was never interested, but she is the contemplative type. I think that like with everything moderation is the key.

McC well done to dd! Cannot wait to hear. When are we meeting. DD1 not full time till after half term though.

Camomilla · 24/09/2009 20:57

Gio, hopefully he'll get used to the new teacher, maybe it's the fact he had 3 teachers in 2 weeks so he's feeling a bit spaesato..

Bucharest, your poor friend, she's having a bit of a rough time!! hope the maestra keeps her nose out, but she sounds as she'd probably say that if she (your friend) had been a good wife, then the husband wouldn't have been late to school and she wouldn't have turned to violence really, some bisbetiche around...

at alvise....

and hello pippi

will have to go controcorrente... we loved baby walkers....life saving here

CJC, I'm an italian in London (11yrs), with Italian DP (born and bread up north though). Love the accessibility of everything here, work opportunities, certain foods too , but I miss my family and friends, food, weather and beach, but couldn't live there in the current political climate

Poor DD, Penthe, hope she's through the worst..

oh, we're not far from you this w-end, we have 4 houses to view...

Penthesileia · 24/09/2009 21:35

Thanks Pippi & Camo: yes, she seems ok . On the hydration front, luckily, I'm still BF-ing her, so she was latched on (between vomits ) last night, and was very booby today, poor little thing. She managed a bit of risotto for dinner, so hopefully that's that. She didn't like the salt/sugar replacement stuff the doctor prescribed.

Ooooh, Camo! Good luck house-hunting. Are you going to end up near me? It would be lovely to meet up one day.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 24/09/2009 21:55

Camo if you move there we will def be able to meet up as I am not far away. yuppieee..good luck and let us know. send us links on the places you view - a personalised relocation relocation

Camomilla · 24/09/2009 21:59

hope she (and you) get a good night.

realistically I don't think we could move for a year or so, unless we found "the" perfect house (seen quite a few candidates though tonight, so hoping to get a few more viewings in to make the 5 hr round trip worth while!). you're in DM I think? this time we've mainly got viewings around M (my birth month) and surrounding, I'd prefer s.thing around KL, closer to the beach, you know me. we were hoping to stay the night, but next time, maybe at half term so we can explore more the area, so if you have any recommendations on places to stay, just let me know!

Camomilla · 24/09/2009 22:07

a real life little italy, but we'd never persuade McC to abandon the city..

god, all this threads on nutella have now made me want some, been resisting the temptation, but will give in now....

francagoestohollywood · 25/09/2009 08:50

Lol at Penthe loving Italian leftist Italian intellectuals. God I love them too, and they are becoming a protected species: the other day Brunetta said that la sinistra italiana dovrebbe morire ammazzata" or something along the lines...

Sorry to hear about dd, I think that if she is feeding from you she probably doesn't need much else. Hope she's on the mend (and that you don't catch nasty bug, which I usually do )

Mcc: you read to many anglo saxon pedagogic texts . If we are talking of neglecting parents, then of course a baby walker is a bad idea. But then with neglecting parents anything can become dangerous.
With average sensible parents I don't think a baby walker pose more physical or developmental danger than anything else.

gio71 · 25/09/2009 09:11

another thumbs up to Italian leftist intellectuals. and am a baby walker fan am afraid. I never left DS alone in it but I found it just bridged the gap and helped stop his frustration when he was at the stage of wanting to walk but not being quite ready physically.
CJ I am a Brit living in Rome with my Italian DP and 2 year old DS. It's my second time living here as we had a time in the UK for a few years but here to stay now. I love it here for all the reasons the others have said-all so true. Love the food, being able to be on a Med beach in an hour, taking my ds to run around Piazza San Pietro after I finish work, being surrounded by beauty everywhere I go. Love the child friendly culture and that ds gets attention everywhere he goes. Love the fact he comes out at night with us if we go to restaurant etc and no-one bats an eye. Hate Berlusconi, the half naked women everywhere on TV, the fact you can never get anything official done in one visit- you always have to go to 3 different offices on different days with different papers, leading on from that hate the rudeness of people who work for the state here. And hate the driving.

francagoestohollywood · 25/09/2009 09:17

Oh yes the traffic, I hate the traffic too.
gio, how did it go this am?

gio71 · 25/09/2009 09:24

awful again
didnt want to sound like a stuck record by saying again about it. First thing he said when he woke up was no scuola e bambini e maestra
am just trying to be calm and strong about it and remind myself it is all for his own good that he goes. And also that he seems ok when I pick him up. Had loads of support as well with other peoples horror stories of their dcs wailing every day so at least I know it's not just mine.
Thanks for asking
On a good note my lovely handyman is around putting up ds's new Ikea wardobe so I am going to treat myself and not work this morning, instead sorting out his room because that is exactly how sad I have become now

francagoestohollywood · 25/09/2009 09:48

No you are not sad, I love sorting children's room . The other day I picked ds up from a playdate and got all because his friend's bedroom was full of TROFAST. That's sad

I'm sorry to hear that he had a bad start again this morning.
I hope he's having a nice morning. My advise is to talk to the teacher as much as you can, do not worry of being a pain

McCloudsextoy · 25/09/2009 11:07

Oh, i also love lefty intellectuals! Those beards......

But surely if 4000 kids get injured in these baby walkers every year, then maybe it is better to get rid of them..unfortunately you do have to think of the good of the group, rather what suits an individual child. [lefty emoticon] Neglectful parents are neglectful parents, but the problem with these things that even not neglectful parents, just sleep deprived/distracted/busy/whatever can misuse them! Boh, it is true that if i had been given one i would have used it though.

Playpens, on the other hand, they are god gift to carers, why do people dislike them so much on here?

Gio, just think that he will settle in, lots of tlc...

Anyone on W&P? It is delightful...

CCj I am in Italian living in England and love it, even the weather! I wish I suppose that UK society was a little bit more creative maybe, but quite happy tbh, easy to make like minded friends, love the libraries, the freedom to be who you are, etc.

Penthe, have you started your proper j0b?
