I HAVE STARTED A LITTLE ITALY THREAD!!!!

hooray for me!!!

OP posts:
Camomilla · 22/09/2009 21:32

back to re-writng DSis' tesi...

Camomilla · 22/09/2009 21:57

(anti-nutella threads obviously... trying to do too many things at the same time at this time of night is dangerous...

ok, little help ladies: what would you use here: "... like the ones in London?s Regent's Street, to the crowded vintage markets, like Portobello (London), to ??? streets like Brick Lane, that it has now become a place which can't be missed" - sis used "characteristic", but she's really trying to say the oppposite, something like pecuuliar/original/not very well known or noot normally known for this.

TheMysticMasseuse · 23/09/2009 07:01

colourful? unique? exotic?

OP posts:
Sputnik · 23/09/2009 07:41

Unique maybe. Is your sis doing a tesi on London shopping?

Bucharest · 23/09/2009 08:18

I would say "streets like Brick Lane, once not even remotely considered fashionable, but now, thanks to writers like Monica Ali,likely to become the new Notting Hill in the space of a few short years..."

(but then I never use one word when I could use 250!)

Morning all.....Franca, yes the maestra would definitely have known they were divorced, that's what would make me so cross...my friend's ex comes from a well-known local family who own a restaurant and have an uncommon surname...in fact, when I told dp the name of dd's little friend he immediately said "oh, that'll be so and so's child then?"

I'd say philosophy A'level definitely not soft. Extra hard maybe? (I did a bit of the A'level programme as part of my Gen Studies A level course and it was blimmin' hard...Enjoyed it a lot though.)

gio71 · 23/09/2009 08:22

DS loads better this morn so took him to school and he was in floods of tears when I left . The Maestra said she'd call me again if necessary so am just on edge waiting for a call. It's so horrible leaving him like that . I can't even comfort myself with the idea that after 10 mins he'll be fine as yesterday he sobbed the entire time.

Bucharest · 23/09/2009 08:31

Oh Gio, Have some very unMN (((())))...it must be awful leaving them when they're like that....How old is he???

Cheer yourself up with some MN inanity...I've just told someone on (yet another) fruit shoot thread to get a life...do you think they'll chuck me out????

gio71 · 23/09/2009 08:36

cheers Bucharest. He's 2, going to be 3 in Oct. Can you give me link to thread so I can watch the backlash to cheer myself up ? You are braver than I am, I tend to lurk on those threads thinking WTF but haven't got the balls to stick my neck out and post!

Bucharest · 23/09/2009 08:43

It's called "I judged like I never judged before" or something- it's still in top convos...

Bucharest · 23/09/2009 08:44

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/830423-Oh-I-so-judged-yesterday-I-judged-like-I-39

(can't remember how to do hyperlink thing )

Sputnik · 23/09/2009 08:47

Gio I can really sympathise as I must have left DD like that countless times, it is so demoralising and an awful way to start your day. Lets hope he has cheered up.

gio71 · 23/09/2009 09:09

thanks Sput. Bloody school! Wish could just keep him at home with me. Why do they have to grow up? (over protective Mum emoticon). OK I think I need to go and make another caffè and get a grip before I start talking home schooling and other such nonsense
Lol at "get a life" Bucharest.

Penthesileia · 23/09/2009 09:13

Oh gio ! Poor you! Let's feel sad together - DD still cries terribly when I leave her with the nanny. It breaks my heart.

Totally agree about the Nutella. What's wrong?

LOL @ Bucharest & fruit shoots. Personally I don't like them because they are aesthetically unpleasing.

McCloud - philosophy definitely hard, I'd say. Sometimes it depends on exam boards, by the way, and I think, though am not sure, that only one exam board (Cambridge?) does philosophy any more, and they're "hard", IYKWIM. HTH!

Camomilla · 23/09/2009 09:42

thanks, she's doing a tesi on fashion, well, more specifically on the devolopment and eveolution of a trend/fashion line. I wasn't aware that Brick Lane was so fashionable, as in a place to buy clothes... i'm so old and out of touch....

gio, DS cried for the first few weeks, than he'd cry when I picked him up!

bucharest, you're so brave!

CJCregg · 23/09/2009 12:12

Buon giorno, ladies. I am so sorry to butt into your thread, but I was browsing and have recently had a holiday in Italy and felt SO nostalgic when I found you that I have been lurking.

I have a long-standing love of Italy and am so, so envious of you all living there. But I have felt awkward about intruding on such a cosy thread, so I hope you don't mind.

Really enjoyed the nutella exchanges, too! We bought loads when in Italy and it has come home with us, sadly for my waistline. And I may be going to Venice soon for a romantic weekend ... So I guess what I'm saying is would you mind if I joined in, occasionally, just for the odd wallow?

The thing I'm most embarrassed about is that I have a really crazy Italian launderette question. If it's not too mad, can anyone help me?

TheMysticMasseuse · 23/09/2009 12:23

if it's not mad, we don't like it- so shoot away CJCregg, and welcome!

OP posts:
Rosa · 23/09/2009 12:46

Hi CJ- COming to Venice good I can fill any space in your case you might have ( joke).
For the record my mum brings her wool trousers here to be dry cleaned when she comes as it costs half and is quicker !!!!
Gio hope ds got a bit better a very short time after you left !
Nutella - I don't like the stuff but in the winter I will have it for dh and dd1. However .... If put it in ice trays and freeze then make a simple choc sponge and wack a cube in the middle of small budini size pots cook and serve it is yummy esp with single cream .....( IN a non diet phase obviously)
Re the bite - boy wasn't there so dd said so I know who it was - teacher said she would keep an eye out and she diddn't know . I said I diddn't want dd thinking that it was ok for her to go off an do it as she did in the past as she saw xxxx doing it but having said that she is a older so maybe not ?
Still no offer of help for this pm so both dd coming to school meeting have bag of toys for minirosa and am hoping that there will be at least 1 other child for dd1 to play with or its sticker books all round ! DH has promised to try and race home but if he has work he stays !!
I do so want to dig out my gucci bag but it is a tiny one ( in my slimmer days ) so a bit useless. Also realised decent trousers have minirosas dinner on from last night so looks like jeans again god will never make the Yummy mummy brigade !

Camomilla · 23/09/2009 12:47

hello CJCregg, and welcome... now, "crasy italian launderette question" sounds intriguing!

gio71 · 23/09/2009 12:58

CJ Cregg - Welcome and I suspect by your name you are a fellow West Wing fan so doubly welcome! . Ask the question, I am intrigued.
DS lasted til the end anyway. He wasn't crying when I arrived so that was something although very puffy faced. The maestra said ah si è stato cosi cosi, sai com'è. Er no I don't so bit more detail before you rush me out of the school gates tomorrow please! Anyway he seems ok, we stopped at the usual alimentari on the way back where they give spoil him with pieces of pizza bianca and parmigiano and ruin my hopes of him finishing his lunch but sod it, he's happy!Hope the meeting goes ok Rosa.

gio71 · 23/09/2009 13:01

alimentare even

Camomilla · 23/09/2009 13:13

must be school meeting day! DS will be looked after in other class, DD will be with me, probably trying to escape from buggy or sling.....

gio, glad he's fine

McCloudsextoy · 23/09/2009 13:14

Thank you Penthe!
I would call Brick Lane "vibrant", we are close by and love it.

Gio, hope ds is better today.

No more mnetting for me today, ciaoo.

minervaitalica · 23/09/2009 14:09

Good morning and welcome CJ Cregg! Your arrival makes means I am not the most recent arrival

Really feel close to those who hate leaving their DCs... It's becoming harder every day, and I have not even started work yet... I thought it would be getting easier!!!

On the A-levels question: part of my degree is philosophy, and from memory philosophy was considered a good A-level to have. Cambridge university publishes lists of what they consider soft A-levels - I know it's only one university, but from experience at "the other place" they have similar views. See also link below. I suppose it also depends what the goals is afterwards.

Hi all!

Bucharest, gosh I'd be very upset by this teacher's behaviour!
I also wanted to express my solidarity at you living in a small place "where everybody knows your naaaaaame" (to quote Cheers). If on the one hand it might be "reassuring" and safe, on the other it must be a bit of a nightmare! You are a brave woman my dear. Even braver for posting a Fruit Shoot comment (and at penthe: I agree FS are esthetically challenged!!!)

CJ you are welcome any time you like , ask away!

Rosa: I love your ways with Nutella!
Re the bite. In my dc's nursery in Exeter they had a policy of not disclosing to the parents the identity of the offenders, which to be honest I agree with, as they were really tiny children.
With materna, being the children older it is obvious that names will be named (at least by the children themselves! ).
Being the children older and with 1 teacher per a higher number of children sometimes it can happen that accidents aren't detected.
I think I'd want to know if and how they intervene when an accident like that happen. Which is very important, as I wouldn't want my dc to be in a school where biting or hitting accidents etc weren't managed by the teachers. Unfortunately it can happen that the teachers don't notice (it happened to us when ds was at reception in the UK), this is why I've always insisted with my dc to always report to teachers if they had been hit etc.
Good luck!!!

Gio, . I think the first month is always tricky. But thankfully you have an alimentari and you can spoil him with pizza and parmigiano!!!

Bucharest · 23/09/2009 15:54

Hello CJ- this launderette thing sounds v intriguing.....

Well, I've just tried to get hold of my friend on FB as she was in tears in the schoolyard at lunchtime, but I lost her in the general folla....her little boy said something to the teacher about his mother smacking him and she (teacher) said, "oh, it sounds like your mother is a bit violent" It all seems a bit of a carcrash tbh....
