Is it true that the UK, after such a woeful performance and no points, will still be in the competition next year just because they give more money to the EBU?!?

If it is, it's an absolute outrage! You shouldn't be able to buy your way into the competition!

The UK should bow out and let someone who can carry a tune enter next year.

54321 · 25/05/2003 10:25

nerdgirl yes it is true and I totally agree with you re bowing out - it's outrageous! Plus if it was me I would feel terrible about buying my way in why is it being allowed?

nerdgirl · 25/05/2003 10:45

And who else it on the list? France? Germany?

i agree with you beetroot and i don`t think the rest of europe hates england is just that the english entry was pretty bad and considering that england has produced some of the best music in the world everybody expected more from them

suedonim · 25/05/2003 13:43

How well did the Scottish and Welsh entries do?

Tinker · 25/05/2003 15:03

I think if the UK didn't fund the EBU the contest wouldn't happen, not that they're buying their way in. Let's face it, I don't think the UK takes it seriously and, at the risk of sounding arrogant, we don't really need to do it. The UK hasn't really got a lot to prove musicwise.

allatsea · 25/05/2003 18:39

Was it my imagination or was the Turkey entry a mix of Kiss Kiss by Holly Valance and the music from Graham Norton? Probably why the Brits liked it then

pie · 25/05/2003 18:44

Well as 'Kiss Kiss' was a cover of the song first sung by Turkish superstar Tarkan not too surprising!

54321 · 25/05/2003 19:02

Only saw the end but feel now would be a good time to bow out gracefully and spend the money on something decent/really useful.

lou33 · 25/05/2003 20:18

Apparently the Turkish entry was written by the same person that Kiss Kiss was ripped off from.

Should I admit that dh and I picked Turkey as our favourite and Belgium as our second favourite?!

At least the Turkish song still had some sense of its ethnic origins - plus a bit of life to it - unlike the majority of songs which were just the usual vapid Eurovision candyfloss.

GRMUM · 26/05/2003 10:37

Ha!! Me too JanZ ! I thought she was a sort of "hareem madonna"

whymummy · 26/05/2003 12:33

im just listening to a song on the radio and im sure is tatu`s eurovision song "they not gonna get us" in english version, any one know if is them?

willow2 · 26/05/2003 21:06

I think T.a.T.u song was something like
"Don't Ask, Don't Panic"

nerdgirl · 27/05/2003 07:51

No country has to prove itself 'musicwise' Tinker! And you do sound arrogant about it.

So what if the UK gives funds to the EBU, that's no reason for preferrential treatment in a competition! And it is bloody buying yourself a place in the finals.

willow2 · 27/05/2003 14:09

Now now nerdgirl - it's only the eurovision, not worth watching, let alone getting even the tiniest bit worked up about it.

FWIW - no Tinker, we don't have anything to prove music wise. Britain has always been, along with America, at the forefront of the music scene when it comes to "popular" music.

nerdgirl · 27/05/2003 20:25

It's the principle of the thing Willow.

It's like rich parents insisting that their wimpy son who performed woefully at the try outs still gets to be on the rugby team because they give so much money to the school.

It is just not fair and it gets right under my skin.

i agree ks,how about oasis, with all their swearing and sticking two fingers to everyone

willow2 · 28/05/2003 10:10

That's the problem though isn't it - anyone with enough musical talent to have "made it" wouldn't be seen dead on eurovision. Firstly because it's crap and secondly because how humiliating would it be if they didn't win?
