What do you think about "not doing anything" when children are at school/nursery?

morningpaper · 19/05/2005 12:04

My daughter's peers are starting nurseries ... and I'm finding myself really SHOCKED at the fact that my mummy-friends aren't doing anything with their time while their children are out of the home. I asked a friend last week what she did and she said "Oh I just get home, tidy up a bit, have a coffee - and then I have to pick him up again!"

As I work from home there is ALWAYS some work I can do. I also do voluntary work and could always do with more time to get stuff done.

I also don't understand why their partners are happy with them just taking 'mornings off' to themselves - aren't they a bit miffed?

I'm probably just jealous but I can't help but think that they are just plain lazy! What do other people feel about this?!

I think you would all find that most people outside the Mumsnet/SAHM-world would echo Morningpaper's initial post and not hesitate to use the word "lazy" in this context. Not very pc on Mumsnet, but that's not RL.

soapbox · 19/05/2005 22:34

Londonina - are you really suggesting that we all don't live in RL then???

Are we all just virtual figments of your, admittedly twisted, imagination??????

morningpaper · 19/05/2005 22:36

I think what happened was that everyone was angry over the long thread titles, and then they came over here ...

Londinina,

If you really aren't a troll, and you are a genuine mumsnetter (something I am now seriously doubting) but using a different name for this, then stop being so spineless and fgs have the balls to come out and say who you are. Utter cowardice to hide behind a different name for this reason.

alterego · 19/05/2005 22:36

For the benefit of Londonina I think we need a poll of how many mumsnetters are sahms as opposed to in paid work.

Gobbledigook · 19/05/2005 22:36

I actually could not give a flying f*ck what people outside SAHM-dom think I get up to! I'm happy, my kids are happy, my dh is happy - who else matters?

Londonina · 19/05/2005 22:36

Yes I do soapbox. I really do. I give up now. You are all so aggressive and angry. It obviously hit a nerve.

alterego · 19/05/2005 22:37

Well said gdg.

handlemecarefully · 19/05/2005 22:38

I'm going to propose a motion that nobody speaks to Londonina and sends her to virtual coventry unless (s)he declares her hand!

I know a bit playground - but I've been on the pop again

soapbox · 19/05/2005 22:38

Londonina - then I seriously think you need help!

morningpaper · 19/05/2005 22:38

534 posts and you don't give a flying f*ck? Glad I didn't bring up something you really CARED about then ...

OP posts:
Londonina · 19/05/2005 22:40

I am genuine, but after seeing what happened to Fairyfly and Morningpaper and the personal attacks I rather die. If you are going to be controversial on Mumsnet, you have to change your name. FF and Morningpaper both talked about SAHM as a group, but were called ugly names back. No thanks.

soapbox · 19/05/2005 22:40

But GDG - I get all those sympathetic looks from the SAHM's as I rush to get my train to work after dropping the children at school and I am desparate to know what it is that they are all off to do that I am missing out on

handlemecarefully · 19/05/2005 22:41

Soapbox,

Don't give her the satisfaction.

MP - in case you are feeling alone and maligned, I think you've been quite measure and considered on this thread fwiw

Gobbledigook · 19/05/2005 22:42

I did not make 534 posts!!!

I just like a good barney! I'm not actually that bothered what anyone on here thinks (well OK, a few that I like and respect) - I don't know anyone and when I switch off the PC, nothing that is said on here makes any difference to me!

Like I say, I'm just antagonistic and I love it!

alterego · 19/05/2005 22:43

soapbox - we're doing this - "see Caligula's post of 7.41pm (radio/books/mumsnet) or take up voluntary work or a hobby - any of which can be just as stimulating and worthwhile as paid work".

handlemecarefully · 19/05/2005 22:45

Lon,

No I don't think you do have to change your name to be controversial, but I do think you might need to in order to have a licence to be rude.

Your comments about SAHM's giving women a bad name because of leaching off their husbands was unforgiveably crass. I was offended and I'm a working mum for heaven's sake.

Anyway, I'm not supposed to be talking to you

But then I'm thinking .. perhaps you're okay really and just having a bad day...

Jimjams · 19/05/2005 22:45

Mnet is mostly read by SAHM??? Really - not the impression I get at all.

and "SAHM give women a bad name and sponge off their husbands."

Ha ha ha ha ha

This is turning out to be hilarious. FWIW DH works very long hours in a stressful job (by which I mean one that would be recoognised by Joe Public to be stressful) and he still says that what I do is harder. Admittedly that has something too do with the autism, but on the other hand our family life would be a lot lot harder if I wasn't a SAHM as who would deal with all the "stuff".

Anyway he's still working and I'm now off to do some woork (on top of being what I would class a full time SAHM - so what am I full tiem SAHM/part time WAHM).

Who are all these SAHMs who just sit on the sofa? being a SAHM just isn''t like that.

handlemecarefully · 19/05/2005 23:02

You've killed the thread Jimjams - euthanasia in this case I think!

PuffTheMagicDragon · 19/05/2005 23:03

If someone asked me what I did whilst ds1 was at his nursery (2.5 hours a day term time), I would probably also say, "tidy up a bit, have a coffee - and then I have to pick him up again", because I don't think the jobs that I do in that time would be of huge interest to anyone else. It doesn't mean I'm lazy or taking the morning off though (10 homemade vegetable crumbles and a batch of macaroni cheese sit proudly in my freezer as testament to my industriousness ).

Cam · 19/05/2005 23:04

You can always tell when a full moon is waxing

Jimjams · 19/05/2005 23:05

oh god is it?

soapbox · 19/05/2005 23:05

Puff - nursery doesn;t count

But 'big school' well thats another matter

PuffTheMagicDragon · 19/05/2005 23:09

Doh! Why was MP talking about nursery then?

I'm confused

soapbox · 19/05/2005 23:11

Puff - I think she was confused too!

I've done the nursery bit - no time to fart by the time you have to turn around and pick them up again
