do you think un sacco di lavoro? need to do something with radicchio as we have a fair bit...and what is a scalogno anyway?

You will love the stories, i think she is a genius...

McCloudsextoy · 17/08/2009 09:49

we need franca l'esperta di radicchio, mi ricordo che parlava di lasagna pancetta e radicchio, mmmm

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/08/2009 13:21

scalogno non e' scallops? not sure though. yes pasta pancetta e radicchio sounds yummie!

McCloudsextoy · 17/08/2009 14:07

well, have just tried this baby radicchio we have been growing and it is sooooo bitter, do you think it is meant to be like this? not sure anyone in my house will eat it...

McCloudsextoy · 17/08/2009 17:35

and to top it all off dp has just gone out for some posh do, so i have to do the bed night stories and bath with the kids, and prepare meal too of course. I am making them an egg.

Ohhhh! I am really fed up, I want some time without the kids. I am always careful to ask for time alone in advance, whereas he is able to take it just like that at the drop of a hat. With no warning.

and I have all this bloody radicchio i don't know what to do with.

And i feel nobody is listening to me! Anybody out there?????

McCloudsextoy · 17/08/2009 19:36

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 17/08/2009 21:00

so true about the 'booking it so in advance compared to the "I am going for a drink with best mate tonight" received at 6pm'.

McCloudsextoy · 18/08/2009 09:30

Hello!!!
Penthe, happy birthday! I'm glad you found a nanny you like, how's it going?

Rosa, I hope your dad is feeling better, how scary!

Sputnik, you are moving, how exciting!

Gio, hope you are having a good time in tuscany.

We have just got back from salina (with the train, which this time run on time like a swiss train!) and we had a great time. I love the Eolie islands, and the children had a great time, spent the whole day in the water.

I read lots o0f books, I'll be back later and we can even discuss sophie if you want, it's lunch time nowe.

I missed you girls!

OP posts:
Sputnik · 18/08/2009 13:12

Welcome back Franca! The Eolie is one of the first places to go on my list when DS is a bit older. We are just back from 3 days in Tuscany at SIL's place, they have done it up really well, although half the house is still unfinished and the outside is a disaster zone. Was nice though, especially for DD as there was another little girl her own age and they got on really well. Too hot to go for walks and stuff though.

francagoestohollywood · 18/08/2009 13:25

Hi sputnik . Happy you had a good time at your sil and a nice break from the moving.
Yes, the Eolie aren't the easist place to take babies and toddlers. Although to me they are what real sea is like, all those rocks... (I'm straparlando ).

OP posts:
McCloudsextoy · 18/08/2009 13:45

uhh, ciao franca, i always think of caro diario when i hear of the eolie! is it super busy at this time?

oh, i wish we were in tuscany too, though i dont' think i could bear the heat, we are having a sort of english heat wave here....poeople not moaning yet! thankfully!

and tell me franca what to do with this bloody radicchio, it is sooo horribly bitter, i had no idea.......can it be made less bitter?

and i look forward to see a slanging match between franca and pippi about sophie's choice, lol.

putting dd to bed, will be back later....

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 18/08/2009 13:54

I'm exhausted today. dd1 wasn't well last night so no sleep for me. DD2 refuses to sleep now but hey.

welcome back franca.

francagoestohollywood · 18/08/2009 13:54

Ciao Mc cloud.
No, this year it's been scarily quiet in salina (la crisi?), only this ferragosto week has been busier. Lots of big yachts around, though they seem to privilege Panarea, thankfully.

Radicchio? what the hell are you doing with radicchio at this time of the year? Isn't radicchio a winter salad?
I usually make pasta la forno col radicchio. I saute radicchio and onion. I fry some pancetta a cubetti. I make besciamella. I cook the pasta. Pop in the oven with lots of parmesan and a bit of emmental.

Ciao pippi. Sorry you are having a tiring day. We'll disucss sophie tomorrow

Dh has been invited to a seminario in london mid september. I'm soooooooooooooooooooooo tempted..... but it's not environmentally friendly is it? Plus it'd be the beginning of the school... it'd would earn me liots of bad mother points, wouldn't it?
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh london....................

OP posts:
DamonBradleylovesPippi · 18/08/2009 14:02

oh Franca don't be so british - do come !!

Re Sophie: did you like it?

francagoestohollywood · 18/08/2009 14:09

... I so want to go. It's just that september is super busy... I suppose I can make my mind up quite late, anyway.

I don't know if I actually liked it or not. I also read it when I had the flu over christmas, my brain was a bit fluffy then. I suppose I'd have liked it better without all the sophie and nathan love affair. Just the story of sophie in Poland.

But don't you think her choice was actually too rational? too maschile?

Ps: what's this polemica with the Daily Mail and MN? what happened?

OP posts:
DamonBradleylovesPippi · 18/08/2009 14:17

Oh that! The latest MN scandal. An old poster/journalist copied and pasted a thread to be published on the DM. They are all up in arms for:
1.panic that they'll be recognised
2.betrayal of Mnetter
3.link with much hated DM.

Nutshell.

francagoestohollywood · 18/08/2009 14:25

Blimey!
so dod you like it? the book.

OP posts:
McCloudsextoy · 18/08/2009 14:32

Hey, i miss the DM thing, where is it?

I grew the radicchio from seeds, it came up really quickly, it looks beautiful...

Just read a short story by E. A. HOmes, or is it A. E. Homes. Quite perverse. Which one did you like Franca? A bit too weird for me.

Also thank you for B Pym recommendation, I LOOOOVVVVVVE her, so funny and fluffy and true.

You must come Franca, kids will be in school, so you will be free of during the day childcare.

Pippi, can you park the kids in front of the telly?

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 18/08/2009 14:33

re Sophie the more I think about it the more I want to throw it across the road like a De Carlo's book.

I agree with you that it would have been much better if it was just her story. TBH it could have been a great book if he had focused on that only and left all the other topics he tried to analise (the North/South relations; the mental health; the AntiSemitism in America; the AntiSemitism of the Poland; the lesbianism; his own studies of the conflict and of the Nazis). Like I said to you it seems to me he bit far far more than he could chew. In the end nothing is really addressed in depth and it all seems superficial and has the taste of an undergraduate essay. The carachters are so not real (like you say I was so appalled by her 'choice'... WHAT? Yes very masculine, even the wway she deals with it throught the book. It is unbelievable she keeps talking about the boy and not the little girl. Unreal.)

Also I think ultimately he had this idea that he wanted to show that the Nazis did not just exterminate Jews and that not just the Nazis were anti Semitic, which is true but he did it so badly that you want to scream at him. What he also did very badly in my opinion is talking about Jews: he tries to challenge the stereotype when really all he does is reinforce even more.

I just read about him and I can see that all the themes above are very close to his heart: the south, the mental health, his father, slavery etc...

sorry I've been carried away!

McCloudsextoy · 18/08/2009 14:34

You sound like Jeremy Paxman Pippi. Ms Franca, you are not answering the question, did you or did you not like Sophie's Choice?

And where is Penthe? Maybe working?

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 18/08/2009 14:37

I love Barbara Pym. See a simple and yet great book.

One child is playing with friend, and having a fight - must go! Other child has been screaming for my attention - must go! The shame.

Re DM thing: Made me once more think that I should be more careful what I reveal and should have some posts deleted. However it is a public forum open to all soo I kind of not understand. MNers are so protective of this site as if they own it. boh.

I am very opinionated today !
