Can relate to all these grim tales - especially stuff that is hidden - we convince ourselves it's not there. We have an ant problem in the kitchen at teh moment so feel really grubby - even the cat is duisgusted!

mum to toby - can so relate to the ironing one - I get really dross if dh screws clothes up in the ironing basket - fold them so we dont have to bother ironing ! he is appalled at the thought of wearing things without ironing them but he has to do it himself if he feels that strongly (do iron his shirts though - thats a must) - but I do resemble a bag lady most of the time!

whymummy · 28/04/2003 14:05

oh meanmum!maggots are my biggest phobia i soon get gangrene and that`s exactly why i want to be cremated, enough please!!

Hughsie · 28/04/2003 14:07

that should be cross not dross - cant be bothered to correct the other sps!

SoupDragon · 28/04/2003 14:07

What is this "Ironing" people keep talking about?

Tissy · 28/04/2003 14:10

I had to iron something at the weekend, and couldn't find the ironing board. Eventually located it behind a wardrobe we had acquired 18 months ago!!

See how seriously I take my sales, ninja?

Meanmum · 28/04/2003 14:10

I would like to admit to not ironing but unfortunately I do. It's the one thing I really hate, not that you would know it by this thread, but I love the thought of clothes being nicely ironed when I put them on.

Actually I'm really sad and iron my bed clothes and my tea towels. Well I pay my cleaner extra most of the time to do it in all honesty.

doormat · 28/04/2003 14:11

Soupdragon I haven't got a clue. Isn't it a gadget for your hair

SoupDragon · 28/04/2003 14:18

Tea towels??!

Meanmum · 28/04/2003 14:20

I know. I am truly sad. Fancy paying someone to do that for you? Idiocy really but it's my mum's fault as she is so good at everything and she always did it.

doormat · 28/04/2003 14:24

I have a phobia of spiders so use that as an excuse for dp to clean under the appliances. He only does it a few times a year coz he is so lazy. Mind you saves me the job.

ninja · 28/04/2003 14:25

I hate to admit, Tissy, that it's probably the last time it'll get that treatment!

My mum did insist on me ironing all the baby clothes I've been accumulating, she made me feel guilty for not wanting to! (Mind you I managed to palm a lot of it off on my Granny who was up to stay, is going batty, and needed something to occupy her!)

How come everyone I go to visit always has ironed (and matching) bed covers?

Demented · 28/04/2003 14:31

My mum had a new kitchen fitted and she was most annoyed that the fitters hadn't left enough cable for her to get her fridge and washing machine out to clean under them, get a life!

I do admit to being a bit of an ironing freek though, like Meanmum tea towels and bed linen, can I admit to ironing babygros! I don't have a cleaner so everything else is a state.

Meanmum · 28/04/2003 14:32

Yes, I do babygrows, bibs and everything else except bath towels, bath mats and underwear (including socks).

JanZ · 28/04/2003 14:51

I have to admit to quite enjoying ironing - at least you can see the results quickly, plus you can do it while watching something decent on TV.

I have managed to reduce the time spent ironing by hanging the clothes out to dry very carefully. I too like ironed tea towels and bed linen (I'll also blame my supermum for that!)- but have stopped ironing the bottom sheet (it's fitted, so the creases stretch out and who sees it anyway?!), and now only change the bed linen once a fortnight. But I do draw the line at towels - you spoil the pile if you iron them! Dh's T-shirts are now often just being folded.

I would dearly love to get a cleaner, but haven't managed to presuade dh that we should make that investment. He thinks he does most of the cleaning - but doesn't recognise that keeping the place tidy (and I now, since starting Flylady, do my fair share of that) and doing the hoovering does NOT equal "doing the cleaning".

I can't remember the last time the bathroom was cleaned properly (I throw bleach down the loo every so often, but that's about it).

And our oven has never been cleaned - and we've been in the house for 4 years now! My excuse used to be we were going to be putting in a new kitchen - but we're only finally getting around to it this summer!).

susanmt · 28/04/2003 15:14

Tip - dont read this thread if you are suffering from morning sickness1!

Demented · 28/04/2003 15:53

LOL Susanmt, hope you don't feel too bad.

Meanmum, yes I iron bibs too, I hate to see bibs all curled up a the corners, they only take a second to iron. I don't iron towels (apart from tea towels), fitted sheets, blankets, underwear (apart from vests), nappies (apparently there are some who use cloth who do iron them), anything fleece or DS1's bedcovers (not 100% cotton, don't seem to need it).

Philippat · 28/04/2003 16:47

I can't even believe there are people in this world who have time to iron t-shirts, tea towels and bibs. It's time you ladies got a hobby.

alibubbles · 28/04/2003 16:50

When I said to my father that I had to buy a new oven, he said, Why, does the old one need cleaning?

It's also time to move house if the skirting boards need cleaning!

I have a daily aupair and she is brilliant at cleaning the oven, windows, walls, you name it, she does it, all for £5 an hour.

She lives with a family with school age cchildren so is free during the day and comes to me from 10 - 1 everyday. She has been wwith me for nearly 2 years and I am dreading the day she has to go back home!

whymummy · 28/04/2003 16:58

i`ve got a hobbie philippat,i collect dust!

jodee · 28/04/2003 19:33

Meanmum, I can't believe you would iron your bibs and teatowels before picking up cat poo! You've made me laugh, anyway!

Boy did I scroll extremely quickly through the mggts section ....

Meanmum · 28/04/2003 20:05

I do seem to have warped principals when I read back. Just remember it is rarely me ironing normally I pay extra for my cleaner to stay longer.

Linnet · 28/04/2003 20:59

I enjoy ironing, but I only iron my shirts/tops and my trousers for work and dd's clothes, including vests but not pyjamas or undies.I don't Iron dh clothes he can do them himself if he wants them ironed he knows where the iron and ironing board are. I never iron tea towels or underwear and I only Iron pillowcases (because they are small enough to fit on the ironing board)not the sheets or duvet covers. they get all crumpled when your in bed anyway so whats the point, in my opinion.
Incidently it's only in the last few years that I've taken to ironing. When dd was a baby I didn't iron any of her things. She only had them on 5 minutes before she was sick down them anyway and had to be changed, plus I worked full time then so I didn't have the time to iron everything. that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it, lol

Meanmum · 28/04/2003 21:11

Just to get you all off the ironing part of this thread I thought I would let you know I have dishes from yesterday still sitting on my sink to be washed. Along with today's naturally.

I haven't hoovered my floor for 2 weeks as the cleaner couldn't find the hoover last week when she came and I'm figuring I can live until Wednesday when she is back.

I haven't ironed for 3 weeks as ds broke the TV and I don't iron unless I can watch something. Looks like more money for my cleaner this week.

I need to wash both our bed linen and ds's. I don't think I have for the last 3 or 4 weeks so it's certainly about time.

Our lounge has toys strewn all over it along with the dust, fluff, crumbs from ds (and us) and cat hair everywhere.

I still remain a domestic s**t.

Demented · 28/04/2003 23:35

Meanmum, you've got a cleaner but not a dishwasher? I would thoroughly recommend a dishwasher, best thing we've ever bought.

I think my like for ironing is pure lazyness, afterall you can stand on the one spot watching your favourite TV programmes, sometimes glass of wine to hand, maybe some crisps or chocolate (have to be careful around the clothes though) and still make DH feel bad that you have been doing all that work in the evening!

Tinker · 28/04/2003 23:43

Meanmum - ha, that's nothing. Today emptied pan left on cooker since last week with bolognese sauce in - mouldy.

Emptied sink to do washing up in that had a mouldy lunch bag which had been slung into hot soapy water in horror last Wednesday - sink had not been emptied until tonight.

Had one can of Mr Sheen that lasted 7 years.

My mum gave me her old hoover a fortnight ago cos mine had broken and hadn't been used since February. My mum spotted the 'new' one still in the boot of my car yesterday.

I have NEVER cleaned my oven in 10 years.

The bath has a sort of film on it but I just think filling it with hot water each night cleans it doesn't it?
