Apart from pat self on back?

I am thinking of retraining but no idea about jobs. Those are the things I'm considering studying - what REAL ACTUAL JOBS might I get with a postgrad MA/PHD in them?

I mean ones that pay money. Any money. But must be money.

Thanks dearies.

Lenin - I'm also sniffy about split infinitives.

LOL about randomly throwing in a recognisable word Tourettes style...'Yes the influence of Foucault's can be seen in..Wanker!..Tarkovsky's films...'

ruty · 30/04/2009 10:59

Foucault. Damn you, rogue apostrophe, damn you.

Peas, I think the thread under site stuff is called something particularly inappropriate in the light of this thread (mumsnet started the thread) such as "Mumsnetters!!! What are you like???!!!! ".

I rarely use exclamation marks! Typical academic, chronically unwilling to concede social or intellectual inferiority !!!

Fennel · 30/04/2009 12:57

You could use foucauldian as a keyword search term!! Only true wankers would use it in a mumsnet discussion!!!

I'm getting a whole new identity, just by adding lots of !!! to my posts, I feel like a new poster!

ruty · 30/04/2009 13:26

LOL Fennel [acronyms are another web chat feature I used to turn my nose up at until forced to by limitations of the mode]

Swedes · 30/04/2009 13:47

Fennel

SarahPedersen · 30/04/2009 13:50

Can I just echo Fennel's encouragement for anyone who wants to take a look at our draft chapter to contact one of us.

I would join in with this incredibly interesting thread, but I am MARKING and therefore can not allow myself to get too involved with Mumsnet at the moment.

Only come on to relieve my mind from the constant misuse of the apostrophe. Sod discourse analysis, I spend far too much of my time teaching grammar to postgraduates who should know better! (Threadworm - I loved the aspostrophe article as well, and so use one to demonstrate my femininity!!)

Swedes · 30/04/2009 14:01

I see wankers' Corner providing a very crucial bridge between Pedants' Corner and Other Stuff.

ruty · 30/04/2009 14:45

Threadie, I hope I haven't annoyed you, please don't stop posting so intelligently because of cretins like me, I am learning quite a bit

LlamaFarmerKarmaHarmer · 30/04/2009 14:49

MARKING

Threadworm · 30/04/2009 15:12

Ruty, please don't worry, you haven't annoyed me. I am a total wanker though and I do feel -- here and elsewhere on mn.

As for disappearing up arse, though, I'm a threadworm -- what did you expect?

ruty · 30/04/2009 15:28

LOL - it wasn't directed at you personally though, rather a collective disappearing up a collective arse [wonders about theological and philosophical connotations of a collective unconscious arse]

There was also an interesting editorial piece on fonts, in the Guardian last week/earlier this week - in praise of Comic Sans. I believe that the font you choose also feeds into the nature of your communication - using Comic Sans says a lot about your style and what you're trying to achieve compared with, say, the use of Times New Roman. (And I hate, hate, hate Comic Sans with a passion .... but love the ellipsis!)

onebatmother · 30/04/2009 17:12

re: fonts and their intrinsic characteristics - I came across this the other day and it made me laugh.

I am planning for pandemic flu - no, really, am paid for it, and now think dd has chickenpox, so have no spare bits of brain for wanakge. Which is annoying, as you're all now off Foucault and on to something I actually know something about.

Am with Lenin on the split infinitive too - communicatively fine, and often useful and subtle.

onebatmother · 30/04/2009 17:17

bloody hell habbs - are you really involved in flu strategy? should we be scared?

OP posts:
Fennel · 30/04/2009 17:19

I don't mind split infinitives, or casual typos, abbreviations, or text speak. I see it as naturally evolving language, changing to suit the changing environment.
But I can't extend that tolerance to apostrophe misuse. That grates.

Threadworm · 30/04/2009 17:21

"are you really involved in flu strategy? should we be scared?"

I'm not scared of Habb's involvement. We need someone in the bunker to ensure a proper post-apocalyptic grasp on linguistic evolution.

onebatmother · 30/04/2009 17:29
