who decides what/whois middle class?

ive always wondered what thats all about! what makes someone middle class?, what exactly is middle class?does it have a wage bracket? say £ 50 000 - 250 000 ? or is it just a load of bollox to make the have a wee bit but used to e skint people feel better about themselves.

it's a state of mind...nothing to do with money....but having lot's of it helps.

Upbringing, heritage, nothing to do with money anymore though it obviously used to be.

It's inexplicable but something you sorta know.

If I work through me, DH, and both sets of parents, we cover the gamut of A - E. So where does that put DS?

Maybe where you go on holiday?

Rolo - I wouldn't necessarily say it was based on occupation, thats quite old fashioned view of lower classes 'serving' upper classes.

I would still apply in some cases, of course, but not all.

right then kingrolo what am i ? daddy is an enginer with several business intrests and mummy is a nurse... i am uni educated and dh was high end management for about 20 years...ex h is an accountant....but i am now a sahm and have prevously worked as barmaid for something to do as i get bored in the house......im NOT mc. im skint!

i keep thinking of the catherine tate sketch .... the one she screams "nnoooooo , its the eggs , they're not organic!" ...... so is the consensus thats its all a pile of pants then?

It's all about self improvement. The middle classes are desperate to move up the social ladder while the working/upper classes are too busy just enjoying themselves.

So yes, I think it's a state of mind rather than about income,

drlove - being skint has nothing to do with it. Its not about how much money you have.

You sound fairly middle class to me.

What kind of house/area did you grow up in?
What did your grandparents do?
Were you taught manners, particularly table manners?
Does anyone in your family own a sovereign ring, or a gold clown necklace?
Where would you go for expensive jewellery?
What are your family parties like? Where are they held?
