People who care I suppose

MagNacarta · 12/04/2009 19:49

Sofa - not couch
Sitting room - not lounge
Loo - not toilet
Supper - not tea

etc etc

DSM - like I said, there's much more to it than the chart suggests but it is the basic model used by those doing market research. Broadly speaking, those in band A and B are your traditional MC, those in D and E the traditional WC. The confusion comes around the C1/C2 I think.

I don't have a clue what class I am. Technically I suppose I'm MC but I don't feel like it as I had a fairly soild WC upbringing (and WC doesn't mean chav by the way )

twinsetandpearls · 12/04/2009 19:50

My grandparents lived on the Old Kent Road and i lived there on and off as a teenager.

OrmIrian · 12/04/2009 19:53

OrmIrian · 12/04/2009 19:53

Isn't MC meant to be aspirational? So anyone who is insecure and desperate to do the right thing must be MC? Those below and above don't give a shit.

gold clown/rag doll necklace.

I would be shocked to my winceyette knickers if any mumsnetter had this

Takver · 12/04/2009 19:55

And are you mc, twinset?
But perhaps it was not just the Old Kent Road, but the pub as well that was the killer.
And I think friend could have been as mc as she liked if she hadn't just voted for Thatcher.

KingRolo · 12/04/2009 19:55

So you are working class if you buy jewellery at Argos?

Pawslikepaddington · 12/04/2009 19:57

Aaah yes but the MC don't vote any more surely? As tory and Labour have emalgamated . My grandmother used to say anyone with an accent was WC. Also the MC tend to call their parents mother and father or mummy and father.

DSM · 12/04/2009 19:57

Rolo - yes, you are.

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 12/04/2009 19:57

no idea, someone just asked what one looked like

tigerdroveoverthebunnies · 12/04/2009 19:59

Picture the scene in our local Sainsburys. It is in a v posh area. Man with right on shoes and round specs on the phone to his wife, saying "oh no darling, they've run out of organic chicken, what shall I do".

Twerp

I think he must be MC.

drlove8alltheeastereggs · 12/04/2009 20:00

It's flexible thing now I think. I grew up on a council estate that is now described as "special measures" but was in the 70s filled with hard working (class) people. Dhs dad was a bingo caller from Greenwich who ran amusement arcades.

We live in Brussels and have professional careers. Dd is bilingual and goes to Little Gym with the "posh" children. She was born in Margate. She says "ya" instead of "you". We buy the Sunday Times and go out for dinner (when we can afford a babysitter) Are we middle class? God knows. I certainly don't feel working class, but certainly our backgrounds are soundly working class.

drlove8alltheeastereggs · 12/04/2009 20:03

i like very very posh people just because they are all barking mad! ... find one and ask him/her what she does? trust me on this highly amusing!

Pawslikepaddington · 12/04/2009 20:07

They do not "do" anything. As a friend of a friend said last week "getting a job is the scourge of the drinking classes". However, being a diplomat/ambassador/scientist/perpetual student/traveller is allowed (the latter being a must as you must be able to grasp at least 5 languages and pick up more excentricities habits.

DSM · 12/04/2009 20:08

My aunt and uncle (and dad) are very, very posh, and they are not mad.

drlove8alltheeastereggs · 12/04/2009 20:09

reminds me of joke! 3 men are standing in a bar .... first man is MC ., he turns to second man and asks what he'd get if he sold his house ? 2nd man replies " about 25 million" (upper class), mc man turns to 3rd man and asks the same " what would you get if you sold your house?" 3rd man replies " i dunno , about 15 year?" ( point of the joke the mc is the only one intrested in money?)

No I am working class and proud. My mum however thinks I am middle class and desapirs of me.

twinsetandpearls · 12/04/2009 20:15

I only buy organic meat but am still working class. The middle classes no not have the monopoly on social conscience.

That is SO me!!!
Dh took the piss about the supper thing for years when we first met

Pawslikepaddington · 12/04/2009 20:21

Which is the WC side on the words? Supper is a 10/11pm light meal isn't it? As opposed to a 7pm sit down dinner? And sitting room is for when you have a formal "sitting" room and a more relaxed family room?
