my son is also called zavier he is 4 in nov, , some time's i think what have i done, i can honestly say i can't think of him with any other name. he'll be alright, there are lots of children today that have very differant names.

Angiel · 17/04/2003 21:18

My mum wanted to call me Persephone! I reckon I was bloody lucky!

kaz33 · 17/04/2003 21:25

If we have a girl probably will be called Tamar after my great great granny from the Shetlands - no 2 is due to be a boy though.

Boys names don't seem so much fun though - and will probably give DS2 a sensible name. Its DP's choice this time round, with me having an absolute veto in the case he loses it...

snickers · 17/04/2003 22:22

Adore the name Xavier, but DH not so keen. He was also appalled by my suggestion of Wolfgang... Ah well. We had a girl, but we were still deciding between Tristan, Kingsley or Xan if she turned out to be a boy... Perhaps next time round?

Was interested to see in my DHs granny's home recently, that all the names of the ladies in there read like a list of my peers children. So, furball - perhaps our children will all be saying "let's go for something reeeeeally old fashioned, like Sharon or Kevin" when they have their children! Everything comes full circle sooner or later...

WideWebWitch · 18/04/2003 08:26

Snickers, it certainly does come full circle. When I was a child all those old fashioned names that are coming back were thought horrible - Ruby, Stan etc. I like Milo/Miro for a boy but not sure dp will go for it. Ds's class is so full of unusual names that it's the common ones (Adam etc) that stand out!

What would you choose for your own name? Think I'd go for something straight forward and typically English. Maybe use my middle name, Elizabeth.

soyabean · 18/04/2003 11:33

We chose fairly 'normal' first names for our children because they have an extremely unusual and difficult to spell surname. i love all their names but it is a bit annoying when ds2 is one of three at his nursery and gets vcalled 'little S' , tho now he has moved up the hierarchy and is 'middle S'
I have an unusual but not difficult first name which I was a bit embarrassed by as a teenager (I thought it sounded posh and wished I was called Jackie or Alison: bet you can work out my age from that...) but now I do like having a rare-ish name. There are some little girls around with the same one now, so I have done the occasional doubletake when hearing a parent call it out at the park or somewehere.

zebra · 18/04/2003 14:14

I did choose my first name. When I was 8yo, respelling it "differently" when I was 12yo. Very long story....

I went to school with a Persephone. it never struck me as unusual. I'm thinking I've know a lot of very popular kids with "weird" names: Electra & Barney come to mind.

zebra · 18/04/2003 14:15

and ps: the name I was born with and rejected was ... Elizabeth!

Demented · 18/04/2003 21:26

I quite liked Rio for a girl and Axel for a boy. Rio was just met with silence and Axel, disgust. I have two DS and they both have celtic names.

I have the sort of name that if you shouted it in a busy street about a dozen females would turn round and although I quite like my name I would like something more individual.

Oakmaiden · 18/04/2003 23:02

When I was pregnant with ds my mother suggested that if it were a girl I could call it Klytemnestra - or "Clytie" for short. Apparently it is a family name... "But they'll all make fun of her, Mum" ~I protested - "Oh I don't think so" said my dear old innocent mother "I think it is so unusual that they won't be able to think of a way to make fun of it...". Um, something does spring rather immediately to mind, Mum....

I really liked Rowena as a name (like in Ivanhoe) but my husband said it sounded like a brand of kettle. I still like it though.

This time around we are thinking about using the name "Amaris". I think it is really pretty - and it has several different meanings - in hebrew it means "God has promised", in latin it means "one who is loved" and in old english it means "Child of the Moon". Although it will have to be a middle name, as we already have 2 family members with an initial A - it could get confusing...

Ghosty · 18/04/2003 23:21

A friend of mine recently named her new son 'Jett' ... mmm ... not so sure about that!

WideWebWitch · 19/04/2003 12:11

susanmt · 20/04/2003 00:14

If I have a girl this time I am going to call her Mirena!
But shoudn't that mean that 'Persona' should be a popular name too?

Ghosty · 20/04/2003 08:04

Furball ... no but his brother and sister are called Cody and Paris ... mmmmm?

Homsa · 21/04/2003 22:42

Tallulah, thanks for pointing that out - have never watched Casualty and was completely unaware that there's a Merlin character in there! How disappointing, I thought it was really unique (if not among pets, then at least among people...) Will have to reconsider!
Love Felix, by the way, it sounds lovely and positive and I wouldn't worry about the petfood connection!

leander · 22/04/2003 00:07

When we were having DS my DH after going through the name book only wanted to call him Ace-Diamond I mean is that really a name!!!!!

Moomin · 22/04/2003 00:09

Homsa - that short lady who does DIY SOS has called her ds2 Merlin. God, what's her name?!!!!

Moomin · 22/04/2003 00:12

Just remembered - Lowri Turner. Does she have welsh roots? Both hers and baby's names sound welsh.
Dh was dying for Hector - not sure if he was being tongue in cheek. He said he thought it was heroic. I kept getting visions of Hector's House - and this was before they started using it again on those bank adverts.

batey · 22/04/2003 07:08

I've met someone with a Merlin and a Nero!!

Always liked Barnaby myself!!
