I like Matilda. I think it is quite strong sounding too. It would get shortened to Mat or Matty/ie I suppose so it depends if you like that. I like Cat for a girl as a shortened version of Catriona or Catlin.

Bobbins · 15/04/2003 14:45

I think Tilda Swintons full name is probably Matilda. I like the name a lot.

i also like Red for a boy and Blue for a girl

crystal1 · 15/04/2003 16:00

my ds is called xavier ...
everyone said oh my god you cant call a child that, so when he was born I was abit aprehensive.
Now he will be 3 in june and I couldnt imagine a better name for him im glad i didnt call him anything else, his name is as individual as he is.

rainbow · 15/04/2003 16:15

I also refused to call my DS Francis, Zebra, but only because DH and FIL are called Francis and MIL is Frances too. Too many Francis/es in my family already.

Dizzymummy · 15/04/2003 16:17

I wanted Sorcha (girl) or Iarlaith (boy)but dh hated both.. Still managed to give dd an irish name though

Furball · 15/04/2003 16:20

Ooohhh I so want to know what all these names are! Everybody - I'll tell if you do as well, -deal?

whymummy · 15/04/2003 16:22

mine are harry and jade yolanda

rainbow · 15/04/2003 16:26

You all sound female to me so here's a male point of view. (I have three daughters and no sons so this is the only way to get a word in edgeways!!).

Bunny2 - Don't lumber your poor son with the name Reuben. It is not the easiest name to live with, I should know I've lived with it since 1900 and frozen to death.

MrsS - I agree with your husband, Felix (and Arthur) are cat food brands. You'll be writing a shopping list at the bottom of cards.(us men have got to stick together!)

Rainbow's Dad

rainbow · 15/04/2003 16:27

I waqnted to call my dd Deanna Autumn but hten I had 3 ds instead

rainbow · 15/04/2003 16:28

Start again. I wanted to call my DD Deanna Autumn but I then had 3 ds instead!

Bugsy · 15/04/2003 16:29

Badly wanted to call dd Tallulah, but dh was having none of it. Her name is still unusual but not quite so flamboyant.
Very unusual genuine first names I know:
Escarlarta
Ioan
Bambi (yes really, truly)
Candida (always think of fungus)
Corby (always think of a trouser press)
Sylvan

sinclair · 15/04/2003 17:16

This thread makes fascinating reading! I desperately wanted Dido for my DD but DH put foot down - shortly afterwards the popstar of same name burst onto scene - so always felt had lucky escape. Fancied Chad for the second if a boy, and then the George Dubya election scandal happened. Will not be having any more children as pregnancy hormones clearly have dreadful efffect!!

lou33 · 15/04/2003 17:32

Bugsy, my second daughter is called Tallulah Daisy. First one I wantede to call Delilah but dh wouldn't agree so it became her middle name , first being Lily.

Rhiannon · 15/04/2003 21:28

Have read today that Ryan Gigg's baby is called Liberty, what happened to Rhiannon then, me getting confused?

Rainbow's Dad surely you're not 103 years old and frozen? Still confused.

aphra · 15/04/2003 21:30

I think Calliope is lovely and might use it myself if I have a dd3, that or Calypso. Though people say that's a soft drink.
Dp and I were both very keen on Inigo if we had a boy but again, have been a bit put off by people saying it's too strange.
My dd1 and dd2 are Xanthe and Esme Iona, so we are used to explaining how to spell and pronounce names.

Linnet · 15/04/2003 21:36

Calliope is pronounced cal-I-o-pay. I thought at the time it was pronounced callie-opee, which is why everyone gave me strange looks. My cousin even screwed up her face and said remember this child has to live with this name it's entire life.
I still think it's a lovely name and may even try to persuede dh when I'm pregnant, although like I said we have already agreed on names. But hormones have a funny way of putting you off a name that you've always like

Our dd is called Kira, it's a Persian name meaning sun/bright. There are other ways of spelling it that are Irish one of which is Kiera and means dark. At the moment she is going through a phase of telling everyone she wants to be called Sarah, I wonder sometimes why we spent all those months arguing over names, should have waited and let her choose her own name, lol

Eowyn · 15/04/2003 21:49

I wanted Artemesia, Amelia or Adelaide. All vetoed. Gave birth & just about managed to grunt out "suppose it's Eleanor then" as only name we agreed on, I have always been a bit ambivalent about it but she seems to suit it.
Just glad we didn't do Emily as everyone else did.
Good job she wasn't a boy or would still be nameless.
& yes, over 30 & middle name Louise. all friends were Janes. Freaky.

Emski · 15/04/2003 21:51

I think Matilda is really nice. We found it so difficult to agree on a name, then everytime we did agree, one of us would think of someone we knew with the same name who we didn't particularly like, then that would be ruled out!. We ended up with Hannah eventually, there are hundreds of them about, but I like it. I think I got so fed up trying to be original that I went the other way and chose a bit of a timeless one!. I really want Imogen if we ever have another girl, but dp hates it. Also like Jonty for a boy!

susanmt · 15/04/2003 21:57

My dd is Katherine Morna - I've wanted Katherine since I was in my teens, and Morna is a gaelic name meaning 'beloved'. Sometimes I wish I had used it as a first name. Ds is Aidan Paul Russell - Aidan is chosen because St Aidan was the founder of Lindisfarne and it is one of our fave places - Paul is dh's grandad, and Russell is my Dad, cos ds was born on his birthday.

griffy · 15/04/2003 22:02

DP wanted to callo DS 'Spartacus'... over my dead body.

A friend of mine wanted to have a (purely fictional) son to call Ghengis.

Marina · 15/04/2003 22:41

I wanted Basil for one of ds' middle names because he was born about the time Cardinal Hume died (not RC but thought he was a great man). As I announced this while still under the influence of anaesthesia it was disregarded.
If we have a girl this time and really want to live dangerously we might opt for Ellen Lucy. Ellen is MIL's hated late MIL (yesss! result!) and Lucy is my mother's hated late stepmother. Amazing how quite pretty, harmless names can inspire such vitriolic reactions.
I would also like to know if Rainbow's dad is really 103...I thought my parents were ancient. And I am racking my brains over what Meanmum's real name might be!

MrsS · 16/04/2003 02:20

Rainbow's Dad - I must be cat obsessed as Felix is still my first choice for ds2, and ds1 has Arthur as his middle name. I should have opted for cats instead of children, they are so much less trouble ;-)

We found out today that due to complications ds2 is likely to arrive in two weeks time instead of the 6 weeks we were expecting. I had just bought a sun lounger to spend the next month lazing in the garden and now I am going to have to rush about getting nursery ready / washing baby clothes / packing bag etc. Anyway it means dh now has only 2 weeks to come up with a suitable alternative name and he's running out of time. I may get Felix after all

NQWWW · 16/04/2003 11:22

Best of luck MrsS - hope all goes well.

Bobbins - just searched my ds and dp's names on the Kalabrian site - they both had exactly the same analysis. Disaster - don't tell me he's going to end up just like his dad!!!

ninja · 16/04/2003 12:34

Dizzymummy I've been thinking of Sorcha, I like Saoirse (as I said earlier) but it's too hard to spell maybe - Sorcha's also lovely and is sort of linked with Sarah which is my late Godmother's name.

Bumblelion · 16/04/2003 14:09

I always wanted youngest dd to be called Gretl (like Hansel and Gretl) but everyone I spoke to just laughed and said no way could I call a child that.

I actually think it is a pretty name which is also that little bit unusual. Needless to say she is not called Gretl.
