I always wanted to name any other daughters I had Elysium (even as a middle) . Dp went mad so was relieved when sons came along.

Tinker · 14/04/2003 08:57

I always wanted Amadeus for a son! Fortunately, I had a girl.

whymummy · 14/04/2003 09:06

i wanted to call my dd who`s 2 darjeeling after visiting the place 9 years ago but i ended up calling her jade although she thinks her name is NO!!

WideWebWitch · 14/04/2003 09:11

I quite liked Finn and Red but didn't use them. Hmmm, Tinker, good job you had a girl then!

ninja · 14/04/2003 09:27

My dp is Irish so he wants an Irish name which I'm quite happy about 'cos some of them are so lovely - I really like Saoirse (Seersha) for a girl which means 'freedom' but no-one would be able to spell or pronounce it, so I'll probably have to go for something more mundane.

I wanted Catalina for DD, Catie/Katie for short, but DH reckoned that English tongues and pens would butcher it. DD has Catalina for middle name, though.

Other names that DH refuses to consider are Francis & Alfred. Anything unusual or androgenous, really!

Jimjams · 14/04/2003 10:01

I liked Aisling (pronounced Ashling) but dh doesn't. A friend said it sounded like an alien "take me to your leader", so dh has been totally put off. We've had 2 boys anyway.

eefs · 14/04/2003 10:05

Ninja, I'm Irish as well, and have called my son a beautiful irish name taken from old legends (now also popularised by various members of westlife )
I have a very uncommon Irish name, and while the spellings and pronounciations have proved amusing in work as I travel a lot, I've always loved it for it's meaning and for being unique.
p.s. I love the name Saoirse

Gem13 · 14/04/2003 10:15

DH seriously wanted Hercules after one of his ancestors way back when.

We have an 'H' surname so apart from the weirdness of the first name it would have sounded rather comical.

Fortunately, I got my way and we didn't use it. It would have suited DS at birth as he was 9'10 but he's now tall and slender!

My father wanted to call my brother Quatermass Ignatius and me India. Luckily my mother prevailed. Actually I don't mind India, but Quatermass Ignatius???

katierocket · 14/04/2003 10:33

I always loved Hamish but everyone said "you can't call him that it's a Scottish name" - which is true but so what..I liked it. settled on ben.

SoupDragon · 14/04/2003 10:42

I love Celtic names but most of my choices got rejected. Desperately wanted to use Finn though. I used to put forward deliberately fanciful suggestions until my choices sounded normal by comparison

to come over all ali g i think we is a multicultural society man and all these foreign names are cool jus go for it man saorise (sic) is WICKID so what if they can't spell it? booyakasha

doormat · 14/04/2003 11:28

I like Scarlett aswell for a girl. My ex husband wanted Excalibur for a boy. no wonder I divorced him.

lou33 · 14/04/2003 11:35

I wanted to call number 4 Tiger if he had been a she. Dh was cool about it, though it would probably have ended up as a middle name because of our surname.

babster · 14/04/2003 11:38

Saoirse is lovely! My dh is Irish too and we've got a Ciara. Chances are, by the time she starts school there'll be some pop star, actress etc with that name and it'll be common as muck

Lara2 · 14/04/2003 12:04

If ds2 had been a girl he would have been Arianne Colombia Electra. DH is a bit of a space fiend, and the Electra started out as a bit of a joke and grew on us. We ended up with gorgeous ds2 who is Zachary Ethan Caleb - very Steinbeck as my dad is fond of reminding me!

ninja · 14/04/2003 12:28

Thank you all for your enthusiasm I'll put Saoirse back on my list - trouble is both of us have surnames that no-one can spell, I guess if they have to ask the spelling of one .....

You're right babster - Malarchy and Sinead can't even be considered now!

I like Finn - soupdragon, but not with my one syllable surname.

My sister has Felix as a second name for one of hers, mind you she has cosmo as a first name!

NQWWW · 14/04/2003 12:41

One syllable surnames do make things hard, don't they? Especially when they sound like part of a word (in our case "less". Makes Grace, Penny, Faith, etc out of the question!

PandaBear · 14/04/2003 13:16

Not me, my mothers brother. He was going to call his son Issac. What's so amazing about that I hear you ask. Their surname is Hunt!!! Turns out it could have been quite appropriate.
