DH wanted dd's middle name to be Melody (after the Stones' song, "Melody, it was her second name" etc.

Unfortunately he didn't tell me until about a month ago and we had registered her name when she was 4 weeks old! Also, the girl in the song was a total slapper so am quite relieved

monkey · 16/04/2003 18:20

crystal1 - I adore the name Xavier. Dh unfortunately laughed outloud at the suggestion, a definite no no, and Aidan, susanmt - I really had my heart set on that, but again, vetoed by dh. I really love both those names. I'm now pg again, sure it'll be a boy & have run out of ideas - I have 2 sons already, dh chose both the names, and won't hear of any that I like, and I don't just like them, I really love them, - can't say I feel the same about the names they've got - is that terrible?

whymummy · 16/04/2003 19:00

i also wanted to call my dd lola but we called the dog lola before i knew i was pregnant and having a girl

CP · 16/04/2003 19:07

I would have liked to call dd Arabella but dh said it was too 'posh'. If we ever have a boy I would love Finbar but I think dh would object to that too!

Chinchilla · 16/04/2003 20:00

Eowyn - where do you live? You sound amazingly like a friend of mine whose middle name is Louise, and whose daughter is called Eleanor. I recommended this site to her, but didn't think she had wanted to look here!

Eowyn · 16/04/2003 20:31

I live near Farnborough, Hants...don't think I know anyone else who looks on here....but tell me if I'm wrong!

Chinchilla · 16/04/2003 20:33

No, panic over - my friend lives in the same town as me!

Homsa · 16/04/2003 20:35

We're thinking of calling our son Merlin and giving him a run-of-the-mill middle name as a getout clause. But still not sure about it - what do you think?

BTW, I recently read somewhere that people with unusual names are disproportionately well represented among students at American Ivy League universities - and among inmates of mental hospitals ...

Chiccadum · 16/04/2003 20:44

When I was pregnant with DD1 I was adamant that I wanted to call her Trevyn, which, I think is a welsh name, I still love it now, but everyone I spoke to said it was awful.

Rhiannon · 16/04/2003 21:47

I suppose you should always be careful of names that rhyme with something. I wanted Gabby my Mum said no they'll call her scabby Gabby!

WedgiesMum · 16/04/2003 21:58

Called Ds Izaak as loved the name, and it does suit him rather than the Lemmy or Lars Dh suggested. Dd has much more of a mouthfull - Nell Scarlett Valentine - and kind of wish now had been brave enough to use Scarlett as first name.

Merlin is our cats name if that helps (my god are we all obsessed with cats???) and very interested to see if Rainbow's Dad is 103....

tallulah · 16/04/2003 22:37

Homsa, love the name Merlin (tho it was the name of our first dog- a border collie). There will probably be a few more Merlin's around, thanks to Casualty.

spacemonkey · 16/04/2003 23:03

Felix is a great name, DD would've been Felix if she hadn't been a she (she's called Astrid). When ds was born dh wanted to call him Zebedee - vetoed by me - we went for Guy in the end. If he had been a girl we would've gone for Nina, Sadie or Cleo.

There was a couple in this month's Top Gear magazine who have called their daughters Mercedes (which is lovely i think) and Lexus! This kicked off a whole discussion in the house about car names for babies - Diablo perhaps? Or how about Testarossa?

Lorien · 17/04/2003 04:29

HI, my ds2 is a Felix. He is 7 months now and I've no regrets at all: it sounds nice (to me at least....) everyone konws how to spell it (you just say its Felix like Felix the Cat) and it means happy. Obviously if you live near Felixstowe (Felix's town) its a good choice or in Cornwall (Felix was a Cornish king). And almost all the European languages have a Felix too.
By the way, Felix's elder brother is a rather steady-and-safe William (Willo) but we were feeling much braver by the time that ds2 came along...

Lorien · 17/04/2003 04:31

I've never heard of Felix the cat food brand, but that just had me thinking of other names that are dominated by their commercial brands:
Ariel
Flora
Nike

colette · 17/04/2003 05:13

We didn't name d/d until 2 days before we had to register her ( 3 weeks old in scotland) because we couldn't agree. I am determined to have the name or at least shortlist chosen this time. Especially as this week I had a loss of fluid and they've given me a steroid inj incase I go into labour prem.
Anyway last time dh wanted Ottis !! He stil likes it - I don't have any definates - Glen perhaps or for a girl Carys or Colette.

Azure · 17/04/2003 08:40

My sister and I apply the "barrister" test for names, i.e. how would the name sound if they became a barrister. A name that is wonderfully cute on a five year-old girl may not be so suitable on a forty year-old chief of police or head of MI5. To what extent are people stereotyped by their name (unfortunately)?

Meanmum · 17/04/2003 08:43

Colette - I'm not helping your cause here but you can tell dh that I like Ottis. It reminds me of Otis Reading who I'm a fan of.

I like Carys too.

rainbow · 17/04/2003 11:10

My dad gave me similar advice, Azure. When I was pregnant with DS1. He told me to find pictures in magazines of a baby, a tenish year old, a late teenager, someone who is 30+, 50+, 70+ and 90+. If the name fits all these people then it is an 'appropriate name'. He told me not to forget that whatever name I "saddle the poor child with, it's got to last a lifetime."

rainbow · 17/04/2003 11:23

I am SO fed up with people assuming my husband is Irish just because DS1 is called Ryan (FIL is Irish but that is not y we chose Ryan). DS2 is called Callum, (which is Scottish for Colin) but nobody assumes we're Scottish. DS3 is Luke just to add him into the equation.

iota · 17/04/2003 11:26

Mercedes is a proper girl's name - anyone read the Count of Monte Cristo? Some car maker hijacked it - the name, that is, not the book.

rainbow · 17/04/2003 11:29

Keep finding bit of this thread I've missed.
Spacemonkey - My friend had three daughters, the eldest 2 being Merecedes and Marina (no3 was Alice not very car like)
I also knew four children named after the place they were born, Dakota, Sydney, Chelsea and London. (Thank goodness they weren't born in Peckham or Sittingbourne!) and triplet girls, Ruby, Amber and Jade!

whymummy · 17/04/2003 11:42

there`s lots of mercedes in spain although some get called merche

Chinchilla · 17/04/2003 20:41

I wanted to call ds Fred, but dh said he would get called 'Freddy Kruger'

ScummyMummy · 17/04/2003 20:59

I like "Felix" as a name. Has a nice meaning too, I think- doesn't it mean happiness as well as cat?
[embarrassed whisper]When I was about 12 I planned to call my children Tangerine Noisette and Oscar Almond[\embarrassed whisper]
