Captain Corelli & Hairy Armpits?

I went to see Capt Corelli's Mandolin last night and in one scene it was obvious that armpits had not been shaved. Husband thought it was very 'authentic for the time period' Anyone been? What did you think? I'm told the latest thing in bikini lines is to do the 'whole thing' leaving a small line down the middle (if you know what I mean!) Ay Caramba! Has anyone had it done? It's got to hurt, right? Which is the best method for hair removal that you would recommend?

No, don't shave your bikini line. It doesn't hurt but it sure does itch when it grows back!!!! And it's not a place you want to be constantly scratching!!!!!!

I saw The Mexican last night, complete tripe unless you're in love with Brad arm-Pitt! I'd definitely recommend Bridget Jones though.

Kia · 06/05/2001 20:28

Beloved and I went to see Capt Corelli whilst daughter went to see Miss Congeniality which she said was funny in parts. We both had read the book before we went and liked the film very much because we knew the 'background' if you like. We're both suckers for anything Greek the film already had us before we went! Yes, I see what you mean about the shaving, its alright for men to be constantly 're-arranging' but not 'ladies'!! But apparently the new in thing is a method used by Indian ladies using sugar? Help! By the way I'm not a pervert!!

eek! Electrolysis, now there's something I hadn't thought about! How long does a session take? Do they do it in square inches or football fields?!

Bloss, I am impressed. You deserve an award for electrolysis on the bikini-line . I've had it on my face, bu the hair is so much finer there. They must have to ramp up the pulse for thicker hair, ouch!

Bugsy · 08/05/2001 15:58

I hate body hair and the way it appears in places it shouldn't without any forewarning! I am a great believer in waxing. It gets less painless and easier the more you do it. However, I know it doesn't suit all people and some people get lots of problems with ingrowing hairs.
Electrolysis scares me, although I'd love to get it done on some "irritating facial hair" as someone politely put it. Why do we get twigs growing out of our chins? I am mortified by this beard growth and would never ever publicly admit to anyone that I have been known to secretly pluck hair from my chin region under the darkest cover of night in a locked bathroom. Its not like I'm a particularly hairy person, so where do these little sprouts appear from?
Ah, the relief of anonymity!

Kia · 08/05/2001 19:48

I'm really hooked on the electrolysis lark, I intend to research this for bikini line and facial hair because it is such a hassle. I blame my friend at college who was quite ruthless at pulling her facials out, I started (if your friend jumps off a cliff, would you do it etc etc!!) to do it too and I now panic if I can't find my tweezers! I have this vision of myself in my 70s, trews, pipe, blue rinse and a beard!! And thats just the facials!

OP posts:
Lil · 09/05/2001 09:05

Ha! When I'm mid fur removal I often think if I was abandoned on a desert island my tweezers would be more important than a hunting knife! Imagine being picked up by a passing ship, with a crew of hunky sailors, and you've not seen a razor, wax etc for months....Howcome Bo Derek never had that problem?!

Is nothing sacred?! Why does nipple hair make me feel like whispering, but no worries shouting to the world about my bikini line - sorry, zip! (Well not yet, more wild meadow currently!) Like you Bloss, I can't believe I'm discussing this. Must go and take beverages!! Cheers!

It is funny that it is so taboo. I've discussed so many intimate details of my life with girlfriends but I would never admit to body/facial hair problems. Infact, I don't think the subject has ever been raised.
Maybe it is because it is so unfeminine or just so damn unattractive to have great big twiggy hairs popping out of unexpected places.
I'm definitely going to look into electrolysis.

I have an offending hair on my chin, if it gets past a certain length it cracks like a whip if there is a strong wind!!, and don't get me started about my top lip, I'd give Tom Selleck a run for his money any day, thank goodness for the waxing strip (albeit bloody painful) it does work, I get my legs waxed once a month, also painful. Although in some European countries it is the "norm" to have the eau de furrie armpits etc. The bikini line, just tuck it in the leg of the costume, ok if there is not much there, so I have to get a sling and get it all in!, what about those women who get most of it waxed off and only have a strip of fur left, oh it would bring a tear to a glass eye.

The worst is the eyebrows, you end up looking like Fu Man Chu! and also as if you've just had a fright.

Kia · 10/05/2001 18:06

Tigger I nearly wet myself laughing at your post when I took a look at the boards this afternoon. Thanks! I had a stress free afternoon just quietly smirking every time I thought about it! I just remembered going to a wedding where the bride had a serious mustache problem, someone had obviously told her that bleach was the answer. Oh it was awful, she had some very elegant friends there and I wondered why they hadn't jumped on her and done the decent thing! We were on hols with a load of French ladies who seemed to go from unselfconscious public plucking to positive yettiness!!

Hair on your face is a bit much and I'm fortunate in that its mostly under control, but apart from that I'm not much into hair removal.

Whats the big deal about a hairy bikini area, so what who cares? And more importantly who's looking?

Do you really have problems with people wincing with distaste at the sight of the vast wads of hair emerging from your nether regions?

I do my legs, but not my armpits, partner doesn't mind (claims to like it, but not even I really belive him). No I don't smell (well, not in an armpit sense) I do hesitate to wear sleevless tops in public.

Am I the only person who doesn't care (much) about hair?

Midge · 11/05/2001 20:51

A friend of mine actually had vile abuse shouted at her across the street because she has hairy pits. Are they really that bad? I think we are a bit too hung up about them.
Hairy face I can do without and I would prefer it if my bikini line hadn't started wandering off down my thighs once I got past 30.

Kia · 11/05/2001 21:31

What's great about these boards is that you can always find a differing point of view that's expressed as just that - a differing point of view. I'm one woman who would like to wake up one morning completely hairless!! Imagine the wigs - look out Cher! I have several friends who couldn't care less and think I'm quite useless because I do, but we agree to differ.

OP posts:
Bugsy · 15/05/2001 09:08

I wish I didn't care about hair but I do so much. I would rather sweat to death in trousers than expose my unwaxed bikini line. On Friday I had to do a manic waxing session on my legs before going out in public with shorts on. You will all think I am totally obsessed when I tell you that I wax my arms too! If I see hair, I feel obliged to remove it.

Snowy · 16/05/2001 11:34

You'd rather sweat in trousers than show your unwaxed bikini line, good grief woman your bikini line is comming out from your trouser legs!! It is visable when you wear shorts, could we see it in knee length skirts? Wax, Wax for all your worth, and have you seen your doctor?

Tigger · 16/05/2001 12:01

Bugsy, ever thought about investing in a strimmer????, tee hee.
