Captain Corelli & Hairy Armpits?

Kia · 05/05/2001 22:36

I went to see Capt Corelli's Mandolin last night and in one scene it was obvious that armpits had not been shaved. Husband thought it was very 'authentic for the time period' Anyone been? What did you think? I'm told the latest thing in bikini lines is to do the 'whole thing' leaving a small line down the middle (if you know what I mean!) Ay Caramba! Has anyone had it done? It's got to hurt, right? Which is the best method for hair removal that you would recommend?

Revenge is yours Tlb, after my smug "hairs not to bad" comments the worst has happened.

I was looking in the mirror feeling very pleased that my hair (head) was thick and luscious as I enter my 14th week of pregnancy.....and then....
I realised with horror my chin looked like desperate Dan.

I'm calculating if my chin is hairy now, by 9 months I'll be in the bum crease club.

I want all you removal tips and now. I'm sorry about any humour I had at anybodys expense. Humble and profound apologies.

Snowy · 24/05/2001 15:37

Omigod - I've just re read Bloss' posting from the 17 may. I don't believe that really happens.

Tigermoth · 24/05/2001 15:46

Pluck them, Snowy. They deserve to die - though it might be a slightly painful death, and alas, not permanent. Funnily enough the more I pluck my three stray chin hairs the weaker the roots are next time. I am weakening their defences, obviously.

So here's the sun. Is everyone now bald or balding in the limb, belly buton etc department? Who's using fake tan? Can anyone recommend a tried and tested really good, natural-looking yet powerful one for my pitifully pale legs? ( to go with my white stilettoes, naturally). Half my summer wardrobe is eagerly waiting a response.

Kia · 24/05/2001 21:09

I bought some 'ecotan' from QVC to use when going to a frightfully upmarket ball (as one does!) and it worked very well, gently layering over the weeks to the big night - until I got quite squiffy - well alot squiffy - the night before and asked beloved to give my back a last spray and I looked like the tatooed lady on the following night with a dark brown dragon on my back! I had to find a shawl and long gloves to distract attention. Moral of this tale is drink and fake tan don't mix!

OP posts:
Marina · 25/05/2001 09:21

Kia, let me get this straight. You let a man loose on you with fake tan products? You're lucky he didn't write "bum", which is what my fun-loving husband would have done.
Tigermoth, I recommend Lancome (cream not aerosol, which gave the bathmat a nice golden finish the time I tried it). It is quite mild for the pastier sort of leg.

Lil · 25/05/2001 10:43

How weird, after letting you all in on my fear of being stuck on a desert island getting hairier by the minute, I saw that only one of the women took a tweezer as their luxury item in the TV Big Brother 'Survivor' programme. One woman even wasted her freebie by taking Twister!! I assume she's had complete body electrolysis then!!

Kia · 25/05/2001 19:27

Marina - I was drunk as a duchess - the defence rests! And as to full body electrolysis ohmigod! Perhaps we should do a board which is what really goes in the 'privacy bag'!! I was at the Docs yesterday with son (tonsilitis, thanks) and a magazine had a survey (yonks old) that had percentage points about what couples consider private from one another starting with going to the loo right the way through to watching your other half do you know what (can't say the M word, only just managed penis without blushing!) anyway, hair removal was considered quite a private thing but some 3% of people don't mind an audience no matter what they're doing!! What happened to sweet mystery or am I showing my age!!

I've just been reading an article that says you can pop a pill to give you a quicker and deeper-lasting tan, or a pill to protect your skin from the sun whilst still getting a nice golden glow.
Are these manufacturers quite mad? They are practically saying it's fine to chuck your Ambre Solaire in the bin, just take this beta carotene tablet and you'll be OK. I think we'll end up a bright orange colour more like. NB - DO NOT take beta carotene when pregnant as it gets converted to Vitamin A which is dangerous.

Lisa · 03/06/2001 19:51

My husband likes the pale look. Which is a good job really! If I use fake-tan I end up looking like a zebra - an orange one at that! And what's wrong with hairy armpits anyway? I hardly ever shave mine, just cannot be bothered. I guess if I was going to the beach I would though. But all this shaving/waxing/electrolisis(sp?) - what we women have to put up with is unreal! I got my eyebrows plucked for the first time a few weeks ago - the pain! Why do we do it? I think if this world was simply inhabited by women, no-one would bother shaving at all and we'd be a lot happier for it!

Tlb · 04/06/2001 10:24

Aha Snowy!
And what is wrong with contemplating entrance to the bum crease club(aka velcro club). Any way have discovered my saving grace though god knows how I am going to afford it! Our gym health rooms has introduced a new 'form of hair removal' called aculight which basically blasts the little buggers into UV space. Catch is that for 15 mins sessions it costs between £50-£70!! Although they say it takes only 15 mins to do your bikini line, needless to say mine would take longer! I would apparantly be looking at a £210-£350 package to have armpits, legs and bikini done - but it lasts upto 5 years and by then I may not care!!

On the subject of fake tan - of which I have been using it for the last 17 years!! (starting with No. 17 washable one it came off when it rained but did look good with white stilletos!!) I highly recommend Clarins cream - nice colour and easy to apply or am about to buy the St Tropez range as had a session done for me and was impressed and thought I would give it a go.

Top tip use those disposable plastic gloves to apply the fake tan. Then to get the backs of your hands brown after applying rub them down the backs of your knees to get rid of the excess there and to apply to your hands too (hope that made sense)

Tib, I've heard that this St Tropez fake tan stuff is the business. Should be at (I believe) £30.00 a tube. Is it really that good?

Tlb · 04/06/2001 13:58

It would take a couple of applications and I had the same as Suew and had it done all over properly first time but it is not that difficult to apply once you've seen it done. It's a really nice colour but not as dark as I expected but looks very natural. you really do need to be meticulous with the body scrub and moisturising first though and yes it is worth it.

Debsb · 04/06/2001 14:04

As another fake tanner for 20 years, I would recommend the body shop stuff. I found clinque didn't give enough colour even for me (brilliant white to start). I did quite like the Estee Laudee spray, but it's still not as good as the body shop one, and is about 3 times the price. Top tip is to use a body scrub first. I use the rice bran scrub from - you've guessed it - the body shop. This seems to work best. I did my legs last week in 5 minutes in a caravan with the kids roaming & only got 1 streak, on my toe!

Kia · 06/01/2002 20:41

Found this on a site and KNEW it would make you smile!

"..A friend of mine went to the doctors for a smear test. Before she went in she needed the toilet, so she went, but when it came to wiping herself there was no toilet roll. So she got a tissue out of her bag did the business and went back to the waiting room. She went into the doctors room, got undressed and lay on the bed with her legs apart. The doctor looked, then walked away and came back with a kidney dish and a pair of tweezers and removed a 24p stamp from her nether regions..."

Kia - Sorry to hear you've been poorly, hope you'll soon be fighting fit and giving us all more 'Hot sex for dieters' as after 1 day (yes, that was one day!) I may need some distractions (never thought I could get so sick of meat, eggs, cheese etc) to stop me from fantisizing (spelling?) about a lovely, juicy green salad!

Maybe that Dr just thought that poor woman had taken 'putting-the-stamp-in-a-safe-place-so-that-you-can-find-it-later' to a new extreme! Or maybe she was sick of her dh pinching her stamps (like mine does!) and had hidden it away - now there's a thought!

Kia · 07/01/2002 22:41

I told everyone at work about that one today and they all thought it must have been me, since I'm the only one with such a messy handbag!! It wasn't though it would be worth it, you could dine out on that story!!

I am having trouble shaking this flu off, thanks for asking Star. I think it must be age creeping up on me. When I went to get some flu stuff in Boots the woman said the standard thing about not taking any other medication with paracetemol in it and I said I couldn't because there's nothing left in the house to take!! Poor girl, I don't think she expected that reply.

As some of you know, I've started my internet course and its going quite well, only we have a bossyboots taking charge (no it isn't me - who said that!!) so I'm being diplomatic (yes I am diplomatic - who SAID that?!) and not making too many waves as yet. At least I appear to have the basic knowledge required, if I at least sit quiet, they'll not KNOW for certain I'm thick!!!

So, have we all chosen our diet for 2002, then? I'm back on Dr Atkins, only to have fallen at the first fence with a great wodge of french bread and butter tonight after work. I have to go to a course on sex discrimination tommorrow, haven't a thing that fits in the executive tart wardrobe, so will go as old fart as per usual! Cheers.

Kia, sorry you can't shake off your flu. Have you really used up everything in your medicine cabinet? (she says awestruck - if I did that I'd be away with the fairies).

Didn't the Berocca tablets, with their huge boost of vit C, help at all? Before christmas I wrote a big thank you, to you, on another thread here (called 'alcohol over-indulgence' or something like that) about the Berocca tip. I'm sure it was you who first mentioned them ages ago.

Hope your course is going well and you don't sneeze all over the teacher.

Came to have a look at this after the hairy legs thread. I wondered if any of those with hair in less common places have been tested for PCOS?
I'm a PCOS sufferer and excess hair is one of the symptoms.

Women with PCOS often have irregular periods and problems conceiving but not always - whenever my husband gets half a chance I'm pregnant. Anyone wants further information I'll post what I know. You might also find either of the following interesting. The discussion board for www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog has some discussion about excess hair after a watchdog healthcheck programme mentioned PCOS. There is also Verity at www.verity-pcos.co.uk

ChanelNo5 · 27/02/2002 20:49

I read in the Mirror yesterday that armpit hair is set to be this summer's hottest (well it would be with all that extra fur!) trend. You heard it here first, girls, so be ahead of the bunch and start sprouting now!

Kia · 27/02/2002 21:32

And here's me had my first cut for spring!!

I'm sorry everyone, I went off for a bit in the new year and have only just seen these messages. Yes Berocca (?) is good after you've had one or two too many, glad it helped. And no I haven't started my diet yet, though I'm currently feeling so ashamed of my fat self that it's only a matter of time.

And my course is going quite well, my first asignment deadline is March 8th. In fact I came up to do some work on it and ended up here!!

Oh well, off to grow some leg hair to keep up with the rest of the fashion victims!!!
