Maybe one person admitting that they felt so bad made others become more open about their feelings, like a chain reaction, it doesn't mean that there were any more or less people feeling this way in the past... now we obviously just have fewer qualms about talking about it!

I did cringe at the thread with the donating, not because I thought it was wrong... possibly not the best way to deal with the person's problems in my opinion but I did think it might spark some er 'fakers' out for money... luckily it seems that hasn't happened, and if it did they'd be laughed off the site no doubt!

Also a few name changers can make it seem like a lot more people are feeling suicidal when in fact it's the same few...

I think its the time of year too... winter dragging on and April can be wet too.

It is good people have a dry place to come, a safe haven in MN to share when you cannot see others. I know it must seem irritating to some.. but emotions should be shared and not hidden away. Just move on and don´t read the threads. I mean its only your screen and you don´t have to click!

Rickman, why do you think people get depressed?

I think there must be something contributing to this in our society? Is it just NHS doing this to people? Or are there more factors and they are at the receiving end of helping/treating people.

Titania - don't take to heart just one persons views - you know there has been a lot of people on here concerned for you and interested in how you're doing.

I think it probably was a cataytic effect, Rickman. also, winter has been fairly miserable weatherwise which doesn't help.

do you think it's anything to do with the way that the threads are organised these days? ie before the feeling low heading existed, people might post under say relationships or whatever had caused things to come to a head whereas having a whole section devoted solely to depression/feeling low sort of pigeonholes it, so it's "about" those feelings rather than more concrete things (which many mnetters might feel they could advise on, eg chuck out your dh or get a new cleaner or whatever to make your life better). ie it's more "abstract" and might seem at first glance to be a bit samey/monotonous (I'm not saying it is, i'm just wondering if that's what makes it seem that way to some mners)

A question, sorry if ignorant: how (and how much) does it help, to post about those feelings? Does it make them more manageable? I wouldn't have thought it would make them go away altogether. Does it work to push away a crisis that you'd otherwise have to face alone?

I guess I am worried that posting makes the feelings more intense and immediate and, this is probably the wrong word, but, more "real", so maybe more likely to be acted on?

You didn't call anyone monotonous and I am most certainly not suicidal - I wouldn't dream of dick features taking care of my son alone. I am his mother and I will bring him up.

I guess I am raw because I have really needed Mumsnet properly for the first time ever and I feel like this thread leaves a bad taste. It is probably bad timing for all of us.

I bear no grudges and agree with what you are saying, just that you must realise that you will upset someone at some point. It is just one of those things with a public site. xx

paps - obviously not just the NHS. Some people have had truly dreadful treatment from parents/partners etc which has had a big effect on their lives/self image etc, with the sort of upbringing where an anxiety disorder of some sort/depression is high likely. And yes, the NHS is having to pick up the pieces of the end result.

But I do wonder if enough is being done to refer people to more specialised help. In particular 3 posters with problems have all been prescribed the same newish AD (with nasty side effects on starting) which doesn't seem to have vastly helped- and I do wonder whether there might be a prescribing issue.

Titania you need to stand up for yourself more and not make moves to head off away. Don´t separate yourself. I think that happens too often when a person is feeling down. No-one is alone here and that is what is so beautiful about MN.

It is sad that the most controversial board is the one for people who feel down and need to reach out the most

If anything is monotonous it is the complaints about the feeling down threads

I think it helps because it's so anonymous and easier to type something than it is to say it to someone. By having a thread, you attract people who have been through something similar and who are therefore well placed ot offer support.

MTS--- Its the new drug of course the doctors are going to prescribe it. Melsy said to me the other day that her doctor admitted he was a pills first kind of man. He was not so into CBT.

WHY!

Is that cos some people need AD´s to go through life. A mental disorder. Is that because people find it harder to face an emotion and not take a pill. I personally think the way we live has ALOT to do with how we feel. And when women (especially in this thread/MN) feel disempowered at home?

I post on here because apart from my DH I have noone. No family apart from an elderly nan and my dh and kids. No friends apart from MN ones.

I agree Soupdragon... being anon helps. I wish that some mums could feel confident enough to realise how many other MN would like t o meet them in RL and not just reach out here

I used to think about suicide all the time when I was in my 20s, I dont at all now and that is nothing to do with my son. I have just learnt from the experiences I've had and they have made me strong.

Right now I just want at least one person to share their experience with me so I can work out what I should do - that is why I started a thread. Some practicality in amongst the mess.

I almost posted on a board (not this one) about feeling really bad...and seeing all my feelings written down like that made me feel worse, it did sort of bring it to a head iykwim... but then again so would talking to someone, if you suddenly realised just how bad you were feeling..

or it could be symptomatic of a particular generation? in which case, certain parts of their hystory as they grew up is simillar in terms of how they were brought up, nutrition, parents involvement, they was society was in their formative years or today etc etc. Just a thought.

Or it may be that depression is diagnosed better these days.

Yes, I'd be interested in views on Binkie's question too.
