Benvenuti, ciao hello

Brava Pippi!
One part I really liked in the speech was when he talked about the patchwork thing.

Wait a minute, I'll go and find it. Here:

"For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus - and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace."

Ok, I'm not American, but as someone part of a multicultural family, and believing that the future will be more and more like that, this really resonated with me.

Also, if you're keen on DD potty training sooner than later, washables (apparently) make it a lot easier.

Handily, I have some I need to sell, although tbh I wouldn't advise mine on a nappy newbie as they're not overly absorbant and there is no velcro. I do have a couple of bamboozles, which are just the ticket, but you'll need more than just 2.

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 21/01/2009 13:23

just got letter from work asking when I'm intending to go back as my "ordinary" ML ends on 2 March.... but, no, thanks, will take the rest too... Pippi, I'm browsing mei tais...

Brangelina · 21/01/2009 13:26

I was a tad underwhelmed by the speech, but then I also had DP constantly interrupting me, so maybe I need to listen to it again. The transcript is in the Guardian but I'm far too lazy to plough through it.

Talking of the Guardian, their series of best 1000 books to read has made me want to buy loads more books. A bit too soon for another Amazon order methinks, particularly as the other one is still not here.

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 21/01/2009 13:26

Pippi, how old is your DD2 (I know I know it, you mentioned it before... but I think that scolapasta disease that's going round is highly contagious)?

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 21/01/2009 13:27

missed most of the speech... DD's was "talking" over Mr President! so rude...

Brangelina · 21/01/2009 13:33

Grrr there's a coach parked under my window with his engine running. I really hate that. If you're cold then put another coat on. The worst culprit is this git who keeps his engine running for the heating but has the window open so he can smoke.

Sunflower, Pippi's DD is Aries I think, so April so would be around 9mo now.

Sputnik · 21/01/2009 13:48

19 month-old DS was glued to the oath swearing, then clapped at the end

Brangelina · 21/01/2009 13:59

Sputnik, did you get my email?

Sputnik · 21/01/2009 14:02

Yes! Sorry. I will send that dress off at some point!

Brangelina · 21/01/2009 14:07

It's alright, no rush, just wanted to make sure it got to you.

PippiCalzelunghe · 21/01/2009 16:03

Brang is right she's an aries (like you) and therefore 9 months...bit early for potty training but still at dd1 first childminder who refused to help with potty training so it took longer than should have been.

franca how obsessed was/is your dd with peppa pig? Here is a A class drug and at my friend's house.

must go and make pizza. Any recipe for dough before I go and look for it?

rosa send pics around asap!!!

has anyone read 'la solitudine dei numeri primi' or similar? what did you think of it?

brang I want to read!!!

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 21/01/2009 16:19

well, pippi, if you ever fancy trying cloth, let me know and I can send you a couple of birth-to-potty nappies, depending on her weight she might even still fit in a size small/1.

pizza for 1/2 people (for the 3 of us always do double, left overs are always nice..):
15 g lievito fresco o una bustina
1,5 dl acqua tiepida
300 g farina 1 cucchiaino di sale

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 21/01/2009 16:28

in case you haven't seen this

PippiCalzelunghe · 21/01/2009 17:34

Thanks sunflower. will try to go to the islington one. Dd1 loves gingerbread man story.

francagoestohollywood · 21/01/2009 17:52

Hi, I seemed to have missed all the chat!

I bought La rep but haven't read Obama's speech yet.

Poor Veltroni: the poor wasn't referred to his economic resources, but to the sorry political state of Partito Democratico, the fact that he has no carisma, despite meaning well ...

Pippi, dd is less obsessed by peppa pig, but still loves it.

MM will email you when the children are in bed, today's been hectic

rosa, how exciting the first playdate! Take your dd's lead, if she wants you to go, then... though I think at that age mine would have wanted me to stay. Maybe

Have to go and buttare pasta

welcome lety!!!!!

Sunflower your dc are lovely!

MM have emailed you

PippiCalzelunghe · 21/01/2009 21:13

sorry Rosa I missed the playdate thing all together. Normal etiquette this part of the world is to stay first time and maybe go the second if child is okay. I'd play it as it feels. some children play better when mums are not there - less clingy.

PippiCalzelunghe · 22/01/2009 10:33

a trivial consideration: who's ever noticed that contrary to here whenever you pay for something in italy the cashier never ever takes from or gives you the money directly in your hand? or is it just in pg.

PippiCalzelunghe · 22/01/2009 10:48

another thing then I must go and will stop talking non stop. How many clothes wash do you do a week? I seem to do one a day. is it normal?

lety · 22/01/2009 11:16

ciao!!!!!
sono in uk,londra.. precisamente fulham..scusate ma io nn parlo molto bene inglese quindi scrivero in italiano se x voi è ok...
a presto

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 22/01/2009 11:36

pippi... at least one load a day! sometimes 2, w-end even 3! greedy baby throwing up all over herself/me + messy boy, not a good combination...

will check next time I go to italy... never really thought about it/noticed...

monkeysmama · 22/01/2009 12:51

Ciao

What horrible depressing weather. We are off to a farm with some friends this afternoon for a long weekend - I haven't checked the weather but if it stays like it is in London it won't but much fun.

Ciao Lety! Anch'io sono a Londra.

Franca thanks for the email - emailed you back but not sure it makes sense!?

We watched the early part of Obama's inauguration then got a taxi to my mum's which we were in during his actual speech. Dd was very confused and looking round the car as if Obama was actually in the cab with us . I am a bit cynical tbh but he's no Bush and I do think it makes a big difference having a Black president.

Brangelina I've been following the Guardian's top 1000 books too and am pleased to say I've read around 2/3 of them . I am an English graduate though & do a lot of reading and reviewing still. I'm really enjoying their lists and they have prompted me to think about rereading some of the books too.

Sunflower - how old is your LO? I was due back to work in November but extended my ML until mid May (infatti the day before dd's 1st birthday) We have just started the job of looking at nurseries and childminders and I am a being a total wuss and getting a bit upset about it all. I'm looking for an Italian speaking childminder but that seems to be impossible to find.

I'd best be getting ready for our trip to the farm.

Buon weekend everyone.

MM

Brangelina · 22/01/2009 13:06

Lety, non c'è problema. Chiedi pure se c'è qualcosa che non riesci a seguire.

Pippi, I do about 3 or 4 loads a week, sometimes more if I have lots of sheets and towels. When we had the nappies I did a couple extra per week. I've never really noticed the changge thing. What I have noticed is that you get a please and thank you in the UK, whereas you're lucky to get a grazie here.

Lovely and sunny here today but omg the fog in the mornings and evenings.

Rosa, did playdate go well? Did you stay in the end?
