New thread and new people and I've only been gone a couple of days! Hi to new people, I am English, live in Rome with Italian DP and 2 year old DS. We are doing the same as the rest re language, I speak English to ds, DP speaks Italian. He is still only speaking a few words so still to see the results of our efforts!
Sputnik, where is the house you are viewing in Rome? Very at Tantik going to Amalfi coast, what wouldnt I give for a break (sigh).
Instead am watching Home Alone DVD for the 50 millionth time this week as ds is absolutely obsessed!
Pippi how is dh now? Franca whats the job (sorry if you've said, cant see but have only skimmed through thread), Rosa what did doc say re fingers?
Having a Christmas day today, off to buy presents, get a tree and go to Christmas Market in Piazza Navona

MarsLady · 06/12/2008 09:16

Getting together with my friend (mother of DS' bf) on Tuesday. Lunch and talk of Italy. Am gathering the ideas you've all given me to show her. Can't wait!

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/12/2008 10:11

Xmasflower you're right, I used to save on a pizzaland wage living in hammersmith. mind you I had almost no outgoing except for rent, crumpetss, butter, travelcard and beers unlike now. it wasn't the one in High street ken by any chance?

Haven't bought smthing in Muji for donkey years. it seems expennsive now

ChristmasFlower · 06/12/2008 10:38

pippi - I think it was! lived in Shep's Bush, worked in notting hill's mcd, so west london was where I went. loved the south ken market that's now gone as well... haven't been in Muji probably since then... it's all tesco and mothercare atm...

Rosa · 06/12/2008 12:59

Brang am shocked at your mensa they should give you a menu on a Monday for the week and you can check with dd that she gets it all !
Hi Christmas flower I am about o change my name to the WIlting Christmas Rosa as dd is keeping me up til mega late and then waking at 4 , 5 , 6 etc. BF is going well and I am looking forward to going to the consultorio on Tues ( venetian weather permitting !!!!) as minirosa is getting into a couple of bad habits - boob snacking - falling asleep and waking 10 minslater as she wants to do it again to mention one!! I agree with Brange the consoltori are great and worth the trek to get to.
Pippi hang in there and all the best for your dh and his recovery.
A posh childs shop in Vce is closing so am off to do battle with every other mum in Venice to try and get DD a pumino for next winter ( it is papermoon/ Burberry stuff). I got dd1 coat last winter there for Eu80 - sale !!!! ( Dh bought it I refused) but it is on its second winter and looks new and will do Minirosa as well . DD1 decathlon Eu18 one is already a bit tired but it has done ecxcellnt service !!!!
Sister left today after a 24 hr trip - was just fab to see her so a bit

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/12/2008 13:50

it's true that it's when you stop that you feel the stress... I want to cry all day today and I am very histerical.
must just sit and relax.

ZZZen · 06/12/2008 14:18

Thanks Franka and Pippi so when dd is strolling around Italy molesting Italian dc on the subject of toffolette, she is going to harvest incomprehension. Trust the Italians not to eat the rubbish the rest of us eat, eh? Well she seems to think Italian dc are going to want to discuss i marshmallow (that's so EASY to rmeember!) with her so we will see.

Sputnik · 06/12/2008 19:06

We pay the maximum for the mensa as we're form a different comune from the school. It's 63 euros plus 11 euros for a block of 20 tickets. They don't give us a menu however, I have to quiz DD on it.

hothell · 06/12/2008 19:58

pippi have you managed to relax?

Penthesileia · 06/12/2008 20:09

Hi everyone - thanks for all your welcomes.

I'm glad tha bf-ing is so normal in Italy. Yes, my MIL bottle-fed both DH and his DS; and my SIL couldn't bf because of medication she has to take, so I suppose I look odd to them!

BTW, sorry if I'm slow to pick up on your news - as I said before, I didn't read through entirely the other thread(s), so am v. behind.

Pippi - hope you're feeling better now.

Rosa - were you successful? How many mums did you floor to get your prize?

Franca - congrats on your job!

No news round my way really, though we officially started giving DD solids today (she'd already had some apple, tangerine, toast & biscuit which she'd snatched from our hands). It was chaos - avocado and mashed potato from the shepherd's pie everywhere. Very fun!

Can anyone recommend any good books on raising bilingual children?

ChristmasFlower · 06/12/2008 22:32

Rosa - DD only started sleeping 12am-6.30am most nights this week, so I understand the feeling (we were spoilt with DS who started doing 10.30pm-7am at 2 weeks)... well still very tired and swamped by clean washing (which I still hope will grow legs and get itself in proper cupboards/drawers) or dirty one (which again would be nice sorted itself and made its way into the washing machine...)....

which shop are you talking about? think mum was thinking of going to Venice next week, might tell her to go and have a look...

PippiCalzelunghe · 07/12/2008 09:21

xmasflower when you find the way to control and organize the laundry pass it on.

hot, yes much better after a day of rest. mini breakdown yesterday. tis true that when you stop it crashes down on you. think will not go today either as no childcare available, and mad xmas shopping rush in the west end which I'd gladly avoid. how are you?

Rosa · 07/12/2008 09:22

The shop is called Cacao and its between SS Apostoli and S Bartolomeo - never made it there as dd1 woke up grumpy and dd2 did not let me nap either so we stayed at home and made xmas cards - minirosa ended up with stars on her tuta as dd1 got carried away with the glue.
HORRIBLE night am thinking of putting minirosa on e bay - she settled at 4 am I was / am at my wits end!

gio71 · 07/12/2008 09:57

poor you Rosa! Are you mumsnetting in the early hours? that was the only thing that kept me sane. Did she not sleep at all until 4???

PippiCalzelunghe · 07/12/2008 11:11

oh rosa well done for keeping your calm and not having put her on ebay already! It must be draining.
oh I think dd2 has woken up...

francagoestohollywood · 07/12/2008 16:56

Oh Rosa, you poor poor thing [sad+ I so know how it feels, as ds slept very little when he was a baby. It is torture, imho (passes a big slice of carrot cake to rosa: carbs help, no matter what they say

Ciao Gio, I'm working 2 mornings a week in a shop... nothing meaningful really, I just hope I'll build up a little bit of confidence to look for something a bit more impegnativo...

Zzzen, no I don't think cchildren have a healthier diet here, maybe in older generation, but it is catching up here.

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 07/12/2008 16:59

Zzzen: are you sssandy?????

Penthe, I'll ask to a friend who is specialised in bilinguism for the title of a good book

OP posts:
ZZZen · 07/12/2008 18:35

yes that's me franca but SO much lessed stressed out these days - hence the name. I'm sure people will start mistaking me for the dalai lama in fact if the thinning of my hair increases. I need to change to a Christmas name now though for the German thread, can't think of one though. Well done getting a job.

The idea of going back to work scares me a bit. So out of practice...

PippiCalzelunghe · 07/12/2008 19:28

oh hello Zzzen . didn't know it was you. so how come you have reached this blissful state of mind? pass on info pls.
oh franca well done re job. I thought it was only a temp thing.

kids in bed. (sorry rosa.)

I feel fat today.

francagoestohollywood · 07/12/2008 20:10

ZZZen, yes tell us the secret!!! Are you still in Germany then? or have you moved back to the uk? well done for new job !!!

Pippi, no, ity is just a temporary thing, but we'll see how it goes.

My children are going to bed now, as it is holiday tomorrow. We are at inlaws and they've been allowed to watch a yoghi and bubu cartone.

OP posts:
Penthesileia · 07/12/2008 22:11

Thanks, Franca.

Poor Rosa - sleep deprivation is dreadful. I'm such a lightweight. I feel bad after it's taken DD an hour and a half to nod off. And here I am, typing in the dark. Hence any spelling mistakes, btw, if I make any.

Toffolette! So funny: my SIL collected Peanuts books (in Italian, obviously) when she was little, and now I read them avidly when I'm over there. I'm sure DH would prefer it if I read Dante, or something. I do try...

Rosa · 08/12/2008 09:12

Better day I did not let her snack feed at all and stuck to the 2 1/2 - 3 hrs feeding - My pump died so we had to give formula last night at the bottle feed - ( we have found a friend with an electric pump one and will see if can borrow !) she slept only 2 hrs after the bottle and demanded bf and then after bf she slept from 1.30 am to 5.30 so am feeling much better !
Toook dd1 to sale shop no pumini left but got her a nice felpa and resisted all the baby stuff they had some beautiful tops / little jackets will go past in a week or so and see if they have dropped teh prices more!!!
Cold sunny day here its festa so putting up tree this pm - probably !

Sputnik · 08/12/2008 14:52

Glad things are looking better. We're having a cold sunny day here too.

Pent, I actually learnt Italian reading comic books!

PippiCalzelunghe · 08/12/2008 20:00

sputnik which comics?

rosa, doesn;t it seem a miracle when they just sleep peacefully. a mum doesn;t ask for much after all.
I am still scarred after all the drama we went through with dd1 at bedtime last year. even now every night I expect her to cry and fel blessed that she doesn't.

bought xmas tree with the girls. Of all them DD1 had to chose the most expensive ever one! won;t send them to nursery tomorrow as a bit sickly and will decorate it together. I have so much fun with my girls .

dh same old. no news. if op is succesfull home by wednesday maybe. fingers xed.

hothell · 08/12/2008 20:19

oh, i want to decorate the tree too, will wait till the weekend i guess, we normally buy a real one, bad for the environment but smells divine.
hope you get more and more sleep rosa, with ds the first few weeks were horrible, with dd no sleep deprivation, fingers crossed.
felt depressed today, what with the weather, the stupid cost of gas and electricity, the fact that my local woollies is going down, infact everything made me feel depressed. early night for me.
hope dh is better pippi.
shall we meet during the hols pippi? have you been to the Childhood Museum? or maybe we can visit the Science one? or anything else really..
