Sleepless night fretting about T and loos and lunches at big school - how neurotic am I ?!

Ooooh yum, pea soup
I still have some in the freezer which we are having on Monday evening yum yum.

No, I have never been to Anne Frank house. I really want to go. We left Holland to move to Germany (Frankfurt where AF came from, funnily enough) the same year my Dutch school were going to study Anne Frank and visit the house, so I missed out. And then for various reasons it just never happened.

But it is on my 'to do' list.

Hotcrossbunny · 12/01/2009 09:54

Morning Hope you had good weekends? It's so mild today, compared to the last few weeks, but damp and dismal here, and I think supposed to rain later. Lovely(not).

We've had an eventful few days again. Friday I went for my appointment with the external medical exam, after the car accident. The doctor was very nice and has recommended 12 physio sessions, not 6, and has suggested counselling to help me get over the anxiety of driving. I'm such a nervous wreck now, it might be a good idea. So I think quite a positive meeting, hopefully the claim can be settled now and I can stop having to fill in endless forms!

I had a shock when I got home though. Doggle had been very very poorly while I was out, so he was rushed to the vet. His painkillers had been irritating the lining of his stomach, so he's had a regime of tummy-settling pills and food over the W/E, and it's settled down. Thank goodness for wooden floors though He's off to the specialist tomorrow, so hopefully we'll know a bit more soon.

I'm off for coffee in a mo with a friend, and I have a mountain of washing to do when I get back, but will try to pop on here later!

Hotcrossbunny · 12/01/2009 09:59

Forgot to say....wasn't The Diary of Anne Frank fabulous?! I read it years ago, and the TV series was pretty well exactly as I'd pictured it. I would LOVE to go to Anne Frank's house. When I was at school I did a German exchange and our school took the German students to the Anne Frank exhibition in Glasgow Probably quite a good idea looking back - I had a miserable time in Germany with my exchange family and they took my to a German war-memorial, which scared me to bits!

MaryAnnSingleton · 12/01/2009 11:34

hello all ! poor poor doggle hotcross - hope he is feeling more settled now and good luck tomorrow with specialist.
Counselling does sound a sensible idea for you - these things can quite unnerve a person and it's best to tackle fears and anxieties asap. before they get overwhelming.
The Anne Frank thing was very good and so moving - T very keen to go to Amsterdam now (actually, he is keen to go anywhere that is 'abroad' !)
V quiet weekend here, didn't do an awful lot.
Am glad it's less chilly though the frost was stunning on the trees.

Hotcrossbunny · 13/01/2009 10:51

Morning

Well doggle is having his MRI this morning. I left him at the specialist earlier, and she had a good feel of him and he's in pain in his hips and lower back. Hopefully they'll be able to find out exactly what's going on and can treat it without bankrupting us! They have a hydrotherapy pool there, so I'm hoping they prescribe swimming as that's something he really really loves doing. Will let you know later what the verdict is.

I'm off to physio now. With any luck he'll manage to release the tension that's causing the headaches.

Hope you're having good days. Am thinking of making soup for tea, this thread has put me in the mood!

MaryAnnSingleton · 13/01/2009 13:27

oh good luck both you and doggle - maybe you can both swim together !

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 13/01/2009 17:11

any news on doggle ? and how was your physio hotcross ?
T has lent money again - to the nice boy who repaid it last time but silly thing did it before paying for his lunch so didn't have enough money himself - he now owes the canteen 35p - argh !

OP posts:
hippipotami · 13/01/2009 20:20

Aw, T is a kind-hearted soul isn't he?

How was physio hotcross? And any news on doggle? Am loving MAS's idea of you both swimming together!!

Had a lovely day - met my friends L and S for lunch.
We all met when S's youngest, L's only and O were toddlers - at toddler swimming! The children all go to different schools so we don't see each other as often as we should. So we have agreed we are going to try to meet up for lunch once a month
And L is hoping she will be able to get her dd K into the secondary I invigilate at adn where I want O to go, so who knows, they could meet up.... (mind you O and K really dislike eachother so that could be interesting )

BT disconnected our internet this morning, so have been feeling a bit 'lost'...
Never mind, am here now

Hotcrossbunny · 14/01/2009 11:00

Hello.

Thank you for asking after us. My physio went well, and I don't have nearly such a bad headache this morning, so I'm hoping he's managed to ease the spasm in my neck. I'm back next week for another session.

Doggle didn't get on quite as well. He sailed through the anaesthetic etc, but the results weren't great

He has a degenerative bone problem, where he's making cartilage round the discs in his spine, which trap the nerves and can begin to protrude into the spinal cord. He's also got problems with both hips, which we knew about, but it seems to be getting worse. oh, and arthritis. The vet talked about operating on his back and putting a steel plate in, and doing partial or full hip-replacements, but I'm not happy about it. He's been such a fab dog, so full of life and joy, that I'm not convinced that surgery and the recuperation after are the best and kindest thing for him, especially with no guarantees it'll make him much better. We have an armful of pills to try, and we go back in 2 weeks to see if there's any improvement. If we can manage the pain, and little and often exercise, then that's what I'd prefer. It's all so so sad, but he's nearly 11, and he owes us nothing(apart from for ENORMOUS vets bills)

Hope you're doing better than us today! I'm off to hoover.

hippipotami · 14/01/2009 11:10

Oh hotcross, sorry to hear about doggle
That is the flip side of pet ownership isn't it?
Fwiw I agree with you on the surgery - if it were Dillydog I don't think we would operate...

Am freezing today - it is very foggy and the cold air seems to have got trapped in my house....
Am about to wrap up warm and take dill to the woods, so that should be nice! Mind you, I think I am falling apart: K and I went swimming on Monday and my back, shoulders, arms, elbows and fingers to the last one, are aching....
Am so unfit....

MaryAnnSingleton · 14/01/2009 12:26

glad your physio went well, but for poor doggle..I agree though that it'd be better not to subject him to operations and steel plates etc at his age..hopefully his discomfort can be managed by drugs and exercise...and I agree,it is the bittersweet thing of having a beloved pet - ageing and being ill is part of it. I think just trying to make him as comfortable and happy as possible is the best thing.

OP posts:
Hotcrossbunny · 14/01/2009 13:10

Hello. Thank you for saying you agree - it's such a hard decision, but it definitely has to all be about what is right for doggle. I'll ring our own vet in a few days and have a chat with her. She has been treating doggle for about 8 years, and I trust her completely. I'm sure she'll get us through this the best way possible.

Sorry you're so sore Hippi. Do you think you're overdoing things a bit? Or maybe you have some low-level virus causing the aches and pains? It is really cold, isn't it? I think foggy damp weather always feels colder than it actually is IYSWIM? And it certainly penetrates into the fabric of the building. Brrrr.

MaryAnnSingleton · 14/01/2009 13:21

I blame this weather for aches and pains - my fingers are numb and icy - have just had to correct several posts typed badly because I can't feel anything ! hope you feel less sore soon hippi

OP posts:
hippipotami · 14/01/2009 13:24

Hi
Have just come back from a lovely invigorating 45minute walk in the woods. 'Twas fab - all foggy and mysterious looking...
Feel a bit less sore...
I agree MAS, I think it is the cold. My fingers feel cold and stiff, my knees ache, my heel is hurting and I just feel soooooo ooooold....

Am warming up some left-over spaghetti for my lunch now and am going to snuggle up on the sofa with my book

Hotcrossbunny · 15/01/2009 16:24

Hello! Am escaping on here for a bit. B has a little friend here for tea and they're having a lovely time upstairs dressing up, so I'm leaving them to get on with it

Hope the aches have settled down a bit Hippi? And your fingers have thawed MAS!!

May I pick your brains please? I have a bit of a dilemma...

It's all change at B's ballet class. Her teacher(not the owner of the school) has left very abruptly and a new all-singing, all-dancing teacher has arrived. There has been lots of advertising going on, exciting new classes etc, and there are a number of new children joining B's class. In fact, B and friend are the only old faces. Suddenly they wont be working towards an exam this year, they will be putting on a show in July instead. There doesn't seem to have been any recognition that our 2 girls are quite experienced now, whereas these new girls are not. B says they are having to show the others what to do. AIBU to worry that they will have a wasted couple of terms, while the focus will be on getting the others up to speed? I don't want to be precious, hot-housing mum about it, but it all seems such a shame. We queried it with the owner of the school yesterday, and I overheard B's teacher today saying there were two difficult mums causing trouble..... It's made even more difficult, because the new teacher has just joined our PTA

Sorry for going on and on Am I making a mountain out of a molehill??? I'm really sad though, because B loves ballet so much, but I think she may get bored treading water. What do you both think?

Oh, shouts of hunger - must go and put oven on for pizza!

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/01/2009 17:33

I would feel a bit miffed if I were you - there is the danger of children getting bored if they aren't being stretched a bit in classes and they have obviously worked hard in previous terms,it seems a shame to have them held back so newcomers can catch up..not sure what can be done though...maybe B and friend could be given separate exercises or more advanced bits to do as well as the class stuff ? I'm probably not being ultra helpful here though..

OP posts:
Hotcrossbunny · 15/01/2009 18:57

Bless you MAS I do tend to get worked up about things and don't know what is 'normal' or not. Tbh I've irrationally taken against the new teacher anyway. She's one of these ultra smiley, exhausting bouncy people, who has no idea of personal space. But obviously she could be a fantastic teacher, but at the moment I'm not getting those vibes. I think I'll check out how other ballet classes are run, just to see what our options are.

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/01/2009 19:02

that sounds a good idea to check out other classes to see what they do - she sounds a bit scary though - bouncy people can be bit overpowering !

OP posts:
hippipotami · 16/01/2009 08:23

Definately check out other classes - but seeing as new teacher is on the PTA, could you have a quiet word with her? (Not during PTA time of course, but after ballet, or at school?) Purely because you are going to be working along side this woman on the PTA...

I would however also let her know that you overheard her describing you as one of the difficult parents... Because otherwise that would nibble at me... And perhaps joke that you obviously got off on the wrong foot...

And actually, that comment would make me actively want to look for another school. Because whenever you will have a genuine question for her you will feel awkward approaching her in case she sees you as 'difficult mum' again.

Well that is how I would feel anyway...

I do remember from E's brief foray into the ballet world, that bouncy, grinning, in-your-face dance teachers are horribly annoying!

And finally, just because they are putting on a show does not mean they have dropped the grading. My friend's dd's very prestigious (well, apparently) ballet school does both, as well as putting the children forward for competitions (which are not called competitions but something else...)

Hope that helps (probably not, have just read back it 'tis more like the ramblings of a mad woman...)

O and E both had a friend back yesterday, so a lovely afternoon was had by all. According to dh I have taken my anal - retentiveness to the next level because both friends names began with H
'Twas lovely though, O's pal H had not been here since they were in nursery. They went into seperate classes after nursery and never really mixed with eachother again. And then suddenly just before christmas they started asking could we the parents sort out a day for tea!
Next week O is having a lovely quiet girl for tea, again, she was his best friend at nursery, they went into sepearate classes after nursery (M went into all the same classes as H), and guess what, they have 'found' eachother again and want to do tea! Am very pleased

MaryAnnSingleton · 16/01/2009 09:19

good advice there hippi

OP posts:
hippipotami · 16/01/2009 09:21

You sure MAS Seems a bit random to me....

MaryAnnSingleton · 16/01/2009 09:28

not at all random - I'd be inclined to look for another school too as I'd be smarting from being thought of as a 'difficult' mum and it would make me feel disgruntled about everything to do with the class, but that's just me of course !

OP posts:
hippipotami · 16/01/2009 10:05

Phew, thank you

I find the 'difficult mum' comment very unfair, as surely after such a major change in the class it is fair to ask questions!
It would also bother me, especially if I was going to be seeing a lot of this woman via the school/PTA.

Hope you are okay hotcross?

Right, better go and empty out the washing machine and have a coffee adn some toast
