DH once met someone who was telepathic with horses. Once a gelded racehorse told her that he wasn't running well because he didn't feel like a proper stallion any more and wanted to be known as (IIRC - which I probably don't) Dorothy.

Dorothy then went on to win lots of races etc.

UD, I have heard about cats with gender issues, though. However I fear that particular cat had more than just gender issues. The cat (male) was notorious for penetrating other male cats in the neighbour hood. Sore bottoms all round.
