Ciao , Hello , Welcome .

OP posts:

Hi DelGirl, sorry this thread was so quiet it dropped off my threads list.
You probably know this but Poggio is 3 or 4 kms up the hill from the station, but buses are quite good, there's 1 for every train I think. Anyway will keep a watch out for you, everything is quiet now but it all picks up again in september. Would love to meet up , there are 2 great gelaterie in Poggio.

Will also ask at nursery, remind me how old your DD is and how many hours a day you'd be interested in. There are also things like music lessons (sort of moving, singing, silly noises type stuff) she might enjoy.

DelGirl · 21/08/2008 13:15

Hi Sputnik . dd is 3 but will be just 4 when we come over in April.

Initially it will be for about 3 months or so, so it's not a permanent move, it's just to try it out. I don't know if this will affect dd attending a school/nursery over there? Am obviously willing to pay. Dependant on cost i'd like her to go as often as possible but probably initially start with 2/3 mornings maybe?

I'd like to get some tuition too but seem to be doing ok with what I've learnt so far and I think I can get by so that's not so important.

I'd really like to meet up with other mums/children once we're over there. DD is very sociable and loves her friends so that is a primary concern. Are there places/groups to meet like here or do you tend to meet in the park etc?

I envisage dropping dd at nursery, parking myself in a cafe with a cappucino and soaking up the language.

Another factor is that i'm on my own so it may or may not prove harder for me, i don't know. but I won't know unless I try, will I. Thanks for your help

DelGirl · 21/08/2008 13:16

About the train, i've not seen the station but I assumed it would be at the bottom. I plan to drive my car over so I will have transport once we're there but trips into Rome will definitely be on the train!

Rosa · 22/08/2008 14:38

I am still around but the sun has come out this afternoon so am off into the garden before the clouds come back - again !!!!

hellooo anyone there?? am back from holiday
had such a lovely time, could quite easily have styed another 2 weeks. You northern lot are so lucky to live near to such a beautiful place!
ds had the time of his life. Our apartment had a huge garden and he spent hours just charging around, playing under the hose etc. Felt v guilty bringing him back to smoggy Rome (although temperature a bit more bearable now).He has become a real daddy's boy, has loved spending so much time with his Dad (and vice versa) which is lovely to watch.
Just had a scan through what have misses-Sputnik am very of your pool although don't know how would cope with the scorpions. We had 3 on different occasions in our place in Varenna. Have never seen a scorpion before (am such crap city person) and in my mind they are all evil killer venom creatures. Not buying dps assurances that no worse than a bee sting. -I've seen that James Bond film with the scorpion used as deadly weapon.....
Oh and am very excited cos dp has said he has def changed mind and we can think about dc2 as soon as we have moved and I have paid off my credit card (which wont be done overnight ! Which is an incentive to curb my out of control Amazon habit... And to get back to dealing with dickhead estate agents. .
Rosa when are you back from the UK?

Sputnik · 25/08/2008 11:55

Welcome back Gio, glad you had a good time. If you fancy coming up for a dip in the pool you are welcome! It's only 15 feet across, but it's been a godsend on many a sticky afternoon this summer. We don't have that many scorpions, honest!

We went into Rome on saturday evening (dinner with MIL, nothing exciting). I was amazed how empty it was, and how clean the air seemed.

Delgirl, I hope to be hearing the nursery this week, will let you know. They are not expensive, my DS will be starting there in october. You can either pay as you go, or buy a set number of hours a month. I guess you'll be looking for a holiday let if you come just for a couple of weeks initially. Have a look on the internet, this looks nice (will hopefully try and find some links for you later), or I have a friend with a B&B about 10 mins drive from Poggio her website is www.collemirabile.com, would probably be alot cheaper.

You can e-mail me if you like sputnikinspace at gmail.com

Hi Rosa, hope you got some decent weather.
Also any other lurkers

DelGirl · 25/08/2008 12:31

Hi all . I heard from work this week that I won't get any time off so I will have to leave my job . I will have been there for 19 years double but they said I could have a job if I went back as a temp so all is not lost. howwever, I really want to make a go of it and am soo excited, I can't tell you. I've just been talking to my sis and was falling over my words i'm so excited. She has booked her holiday with us for the end of May .

Will email you Sputnik when I have a bit more time, thank you so much.

Rosa · 25/08/2008 16:51

Hi I'm back too!
Hope you all had a lovely time. We spent 2 weeks in Menorca, which is lovely, but too crowded in August. Also the food not very inspiring, sadly. We spent the last 10 days nelle marche with friends, and I think I put on 5 kg... .

Pippi, dd loved the peppa pig magazine, thanks again

MatNanPlus · 25/08/2008 17:46

Just lurking are any of you in Sicily?

Am based here tho we just had a lovely 4 days in Ostundi in a Sassi home.

hotHELL · 25/08/2008 17:49

Ciao a tutte, I look like a whale, can hardly move, and loving the rainy weather. Good news Gio about trying to have a baby, i cannot wait for the new arrival.
Poor Rosa, when are you due?
Was Menorca full of Brits then? Why did you go there franca?
Ciao a tutte, mainly lurk these days, as i have a habit of getting sucked in by the internet and not getting dinner ready.....

Sputnik · 25/08/2008 18:53

Sorry, forgot to congratulate you Gio on winning over your DP

Welcome back Franca, and nice to see you Hot, you are almost there!

MatNan, feel free to delurk, we are very nice

Amazon addict here too. How about a Little Italy bookswap circle thingy?

MatNanPlus · 25/08/2008 20:38

TY Sputnik just seen the title and thought i would pop in

francagoestohollywood · 26/08/2008 13:23

Hello Matnan , are you based in sicily?

Sputnik, yes, yes, let's do a bookswap thingy (enthusiastic emoticon!!!), I read in English quite a lot, actually.

Hothell, lol at why did you go there. God knows . Actually we had decided to go on holiday with a group of friends in January and it was 8 adults plus 7 children and we couldn't find a big enough house anywhere else... . Plus these friends of ours, like the 95% of Italians, had ferie only in August, so we were doomed from the beginning. Yes lots of Brits and Germans in menorca, which meant daily access to the guardian and dark choc digestives, which made me happy ... By the way, Menorca is beautiful, the beaches amazing, it's just that August is not the right month.
So, are you nearly there HH? where will you give birth?

MatNanPlus · 26/08/2008 13:25

Yes FGTH am looking after an english baby as mum works here.

francagoestohollywood · 26/08/2008 14:23

where about are you?

MatNanPlus · 26/08/2008 14:49

Palermo

Rosa · 26/08/2008 18:23

Ello Ello Franca welcome back -oh yes to book swap ( all ages - adult and child ) I have sent Dh back with his hand luggage FULL of books for dd it weighed about 8 kg - And I have realised that I still need stuff from Amazon.
I gave a few of my books to a english book shop in Venice so don't have that many but am happy to start maybe we can do an e mail circuit am sure Bramgelina will join in mind you I confess now brain cells have pretty much gone so my reading level is just above Enid Blyton
Welcome Palermo - there was somebody here from Sicily but have not seen her for ages and ages.
Peppa Pig Franca UK is overloaded with the stuff.
Must go dd needs dinner.
Oh am due NOvember Hot but you would think it would be domani bump goes from right under boobs.
Hot hope you are keeping ok .

OP posts:
Sputnik · 26/08/2008 19:46

Ok, we'll wait for Brange to get back, should be soon. We all choose a book we've enjoyed recently, better list them so they're not something everyone's already read. Children's books could work too, we all have DCs 4 years or under IIRC. Or DVDs maybe, we have quite a collection here.

So how's Palermo Matnan? I've always wanted to go there.

hotHELL · 26/08/2008 21:30

interesting to know menorca is beautiful, i always assume those parts look like benidorm!
i am due at the end of september, cannot wait...

francagoestohollywood · 27/08/2008 13:03

Hello rosa, how's it going in the west country? Pippi sent dd a Peppa Pig magazine, which dd enjoyed a lot. I can't find the magazines in Italy, though I did find a peppa pig colouring book at Mondadori international. Mind you, there's an english bookshop in Milan as well, but in 6 months I've never found the time to visit...
so yes, I'm keen to start the book swap thing... . It would have been even nicer if we all lived a bit closer, to meet up for proper english tea and cakes .

Hot, you are nearly there! (no, it's not like benidorm, it is costruita, but generally nice houses etc. Plus well organized. BUT, quite a shock to me, I'm now used to the wilderness of the Eolie...)

How do you find Palermo Matnan? I think it's a marvellous city, but I realize it can be quite a shock for northern europeans, I suppose. So many contrasts.

Rosa · 27/08/2008 14:42

Rosa sneaks off to try and get some ' proper books to read ' I guess Malory Towers or the famous five is not really the thing. But if we talk Maisy , Thomas or the Usborne farm books then I think I am an expert - mind you getting dd to even think about swapping them is a 100% no go !!!!!!
Franca you should have told me about Peppa I have seen the stuff everywhere it was even in the next sale but dd has not seen the cartoon so she is not bothered.
DOubt will be going back into town now got dd winter shoes today £36 so I guess better than ?70 !

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 27/08/2008 18:02

Actually I have a phd in Maisy . We still own 3 videos and one dvd of the dear little mouse... and even now, at the ripe age of six, ds watch it in awe . And I remember with shivers when ds was into Thomas... though I liked the episodes with ringo starr's voice. I also remember with fondness when ds was into mister ben.

Don't worry rosa about peppa pig, dh might have to go to exeter next month, I can ask him to bring back a few things.

As for winter shoes.... I don't even want to begin thinking about them. I need shoes with straps, that are piu' comodi at scuola materna and elementari. A friend tells me thatr decathlon does great shoes at 9 euros and 99

francagoestohollywood · 27/08/2008 18:04

sorry, that sounds harsh. I mean I don't want to think about the psicodramma caused by every trip to shoe shops. And the price and dd's terrible taste

francagoestohollywood · 27/08/2008 18:05

And we love Usbrone books too, ds loves the ones about castles, ancient rome, greek myths etc. They are great.
Gosh I'm talking too much, sorry !!!
