I think their boards are quite complicated to use anyway!

PamT · 08/01/2003 22:22

UKP boards are ok if you get the settings right so that you can see the whole thread in one go. Bea - you stirrer!

cas1968 · 08/01/2003 22:31

Hi Pam,

Nice to see you too. My baby is due 17th Feb, but hopefully it will arrive sooner! Mind you, ds was 10 days late, so not much hope! I have no idea what I'm having, so long as it's healthy...

PamT · 08/01/2003 22:39

That's my mum's birthday Cas. You'll have to let us know on here when things start happening, I love an exciting birth story.

easy · 09/01/2003 11:59

Chinchilla-
I agree with you re TWoodford on RK. I think she does (often not always) give good advice but her tone is often quite offputting. I think one should always try to be kind, and her responses seem a bit sharp sometimes. She also casts an opinion on about every thread, I wonder how she gets the time. DS won't let me talk on the phone, never mind compose e-mails or other stuff on the computer. If I turn it on he badgers me about the Bob The Builder site till I give in.
Like this site much better.
Wont mention the lady on RK again, if she's here too I hope she won't take offence, it's not intended.
As I often say to dh before I pick on him "this isn't a criticism, it's just an observation"

Rhiannon · 09/01/2003 12:25

I would like to see the Mumsnet noticeboards take a more active part. I am yet to sell anything on them unfortunately and it would be nice if we could have a bit of 'promotion' of the noticeboards.

Temptress · 09/01/2003 12:28

Easy - Hubby wont let you.. you arent training him properly!

Temptress · 09/01/2003 12:30

Opp just realised you put son not hubby. That will teach me to read things to quickly . Try Cbeebies my daughter loves that site.

easy · 09/01/2003 14:46

yes Temptress, ds likes that one too, but it loads quite slowly. also quite limited stuff about Bob, which is ds's favourite.
None of which helps me get time on my PC

Temptress · 09/01/2003 20:52

My daughter is heavily into the Fimbles... I'll have to look around for their website. Saying that maybe she is just a little too small to be going on here for now!

Claireandrich · 09/01/2003 22:02

Fimbles site on Cbeebites has a screensaver to download. DD is only 9 months but loves it. The screensaver is quie short so gets repeated lots, and only plays the theme on the first run through but it doesn't faze her. She thinks they are playing peekaboo with her. LOL!

Tinker · 09/01/2003 23:50

I've just registered on Raising Kids. Might mention mumsnet just to see what happens LOVE the idea of being 'told off'

CAM · 10/01/2003 09:18

You're very naughty Tinker! Will that do?

Temptress · 10/01/2003 09:21

I post on Mumsnet, RK and UKP and think its quite sad to see the moaning directed at the other two sites. Whats the point in going somewhere just to cause trouble?

Chinchilla · 10/01/2003 10:13

I think Tinker was joking Temptress!

Temptress · 10/01/2003 10:17

I wasnt just talking about tinkers comments but others made on this thread as well. I really cant understand why there seems to be so much rivalry...surely at the end of the day we all want the same thing.

philly · 10/01/2003 12:38

I am really surprised taht other websites do not allow you to mention other sites,I only post on Mumsnet but also use Tigerchild, not mentioned here yet, mostly for it's health and education directories

willow2 · 10/01/2003 19:16

ok, so I went to find out what all the fuss was about, registered and all that, but don't seem to be able to even get the list of forums up - is it me being dim, or is UKP either hard to use or not working?

Tinker · 10/01/2003 19:27

UKP is mind-numbingly slow to use. And it all seems very earnest. Raising Kids loked quite good actaully, quite sophisticated forum. Not posted yet - will wait a few days

Chinchilla · 10/01/2003 19:29

Temptress - yes, of course you're right. I think that all of us on here are very loyal to Mumsnet, and that is why we are less accepting of other sites' faults. I was very anti RK, because of my experience there, but have already said that I will probably give it another go at some point. I do agree that UKP is very slow, and also think that the threads are hard to follow because of the way that they are laid out. I do like RK's lay out, except that you have to select each page to read. I like Mumsnet because you can read all the thread by scrolling down. Each have their own good and bad points.

Agree with Philly about the info side of Tigerchild being very good and comprehensive, but the boards are much quieter and less fun than here.
Not sure if anyone has said it, but apart from the really nice community spirit here, the software used to manage these boards is just so much quicker and user-friendly. Being able to see a whole thread is much more conducive to a coherent discussion evolving.
Mindful of Temptress' point about dissing other sites I will just say quickly that for a while I was a Babyworld member and think that site has lots to offer, but I found the chat forums completely unmanageable on my home PC. They literally took minutes to load each contribution to a thread - and I honestly feel that this had an impact on the quality of the discussion. Threads petered out in days, were repeated all the time without the benefit of useful previous points made, etc. And yes, I did send my feedback about all of this to Babyworld, and never got a reply. Maximum respect to Tech, whose choice of software was completely inspired - and to all of the Mumsnet team, who reply to points raised very promptly in my experience.

WideWebWitch · 10/01/2003 21:46

I registered with UKP ages ago but haven't been there much as it didn't look very interesting. I didn't much like the layout of the discussions there either, these seem more coherent to me. Also agree that UKP seems a bit earnest. I looked at RK today and that looks better. Haven't posted yet since there don't seem to be as many current discussions and nothing that interested me enough to contribute. Whereas I'll post any old cr*p that comes into my head here

SoupDragon · 11/01/2003 09:53

I had a look at UKP and couldn't get to grips with the layout of the boards. I guess it all comes down to what you're used to though. I also use Babycentre & Babycenter although neither are as active as Mumsnet.

I like mumsnet because we have serious discussions about both parenting and non-parenting issues as well as frivolous threads about fish lipped celebrities.
