OP posts:
breeze · 05/01/2003 19:19

welcome, i have only been here 2 days and hooked already.

Marina · 05/01/2003 19:28

Gosh, like others here I'm amazed that some other parenting websites censure members for even mentioning "rival" websites! I think it speaks volumes for the Mumsnet founders and members' ethos that this is a site where all sources of info and support for parents, including other websites, can be openly and entertainingly discussed.
I'm biassed because I'm a Mumsnet oldster in both senses of the word (nearly 40 and a member for two years or so) but I find a much stronger sense of community on here than on any other parenting website I've come across, so for ages it's been the only one I've bothered with.
Welcome to all the newcomers - there seem to be a lot of you around right now. Was there a magazine or newspaper article about Mumsnet recently? Hope you all stick around.

breeze · 05/01/2003 19:32

i heard about it through a friend

Rhiannon · 05/01/2003 20:13

I love UKP as I'm finally finding a way of raising a bit of extra cash by selling outgrown clothes and toys but don't use any other boards except the noticeboards.

I also love Mumsnet and I think have been a member for a couple of years. I have had invaluable information and advice from my cyber friends. I've spoken about topics that I couldn't really share with friends and been given advice about relationships that I probably would have had to pay a counsellor for.

I love the way everyone has a different opinion on every topic and you can see a situation from all sides.

P.S I'm 35 but definitely look 16 (that's size 16)

Demented · 05/01/2003 21:07

Mumsnet is fab, have never been to UKP but I am sure that cannot be as good as Mumsnet. I think I have been here for almost a year and I am 27, some days I feel 19 and other days 40!

Demented · 05/01/2003 21:08

BTW I have been off-line occasionally in the last year, just re-read my post and it sounds like I have sat here is this seat for the last year!

anais · 05/01/2003 21:36

He he, I'm 22, although some days I feel more like 65

I use UKP too, but Mumsnet is sooooo much easier to use, and I think there's more of a 'community' type of feeling here

Claireandrich · 05/01/2003 21:51

Easy

I read this too and was quite upset with the way that members were treating the lady with the problem - much too harsh IMO. I was also shocked at how quick they were to jump on your back!

I do use another baby site as well - get more opinions and advise that way. I did use RK but find that people are too judgemental at times there. I actually visited mumsnet as a result of your post!!! I like it here - people seem friendly and helpful, and don't seem as quick to judge.

The other site I use I like too. I have used them before DD was born. They have an antenatal club which I like. It is for all the people who's babies are due at the same time as yours. Continues afterwards now. DD is 9 months tomorrow and I do like speaking to others with babies of the same age as I don't have any friends with babies really.

I can't see the problem with using more than one site at all.

Claireandrich · 05/01/2003 21:54

Sorry Chinchilla, mis-read earlier. I thought you were right on RK too.

Tinker · 05/01/2003 22:02

I did use to love looking at the baby names suggestions on UK parents and being' 'honest' with my opinions! Cheap fun

jasper · 05/01/2003 22:05

I have been on dozens of websites with boards like these and mumsnet is head and shoulders above them all . I don't know how they do it but Justine et al seem to keep the real idiots at bay, whereas they seem to take over other sites.
I agree with whoever said mumsnet has a more intellectual membership. The quality of contributions is really high.

jasper · 05/01/2003 22:11

There is a very well known health discussion forum on the web where the moderators are unbelievable.
A question was asked which relates to my work and I answered it as such...I got struck off, because the moderators don't want "experts" replying ! They are quite happy for ill informed people to pedal their own particular brand of nonsense( and isn't the web just full of that?) but won't let healthcare professionals offer advice from their own learning/experience.
Imagine if Mears got booted off mumsnet for speaking out in her capacity as a midwife!

SueW · 05/01/2003 22:14

Jasper that's appalling.

Temptress · 05/01/2003 22:17

I use lots of different baby and mums sites and sometimes wish I could use all of certain items together on one site. I like the HTML on some, smilies, different opinions and also something showing how long you have been with each. I post on UKP, RK (which I have always found to have friendly people and nice opinions), babyworld plus others. Different opinions are good and its up to each person to decide how much they take from anothers reply.

I like mumsnet because it has plenty of regulars posting and lots of differing opinions and helpful people. I am classed as a newbie although I am a "returner" as I used to be a regular about a year/half ago. I actually think this site has improved in that time and look forward to posting regularly.

Furball · 05/01/2003 22:21

Also, you know where you are here, all subjects set out on one page and change colour once you have read them, so you know if it's been updated or not AND all the replies are on the same page so you can 'see at a glance' whether a thread is of interest straight away, without having to trawl through the question and then each answer one by one, crickey if you had to do that here you could be here for years some of the threads are so long!

I think you guys definitely have more of a sense of humour as well - I've laughed out loud at some of the things I've read. Do you get points for sucking up?

jasper · 05/01/2003 22:25

Yes you do furball and you just scored nine out of ten
I agree about the layout of the boards here being really good.
There is also a nearly perfect number of contributions each day - enought to get a good session on the computer each evening looking through them but not so many that you feel swamped.
Wellcome back Temptress, and where have you been??

jasper · 05/01/2003 22:29

Just read Pamt's message. I think it is great that we can have the Kleeneze discussion on mumsnet. Whyever not? Also all those other discussions about which washing machine to buy etc.

tigermoth · 06/01/2003 08:17

I just don't know how I'd find the time to look at another site regularly. As it is I can't read all the discussions here.

I'm an oldie here too - like Marina. Just thought I'd mention that other sites do crop up in conversation here from time to time, with no resulting warnings or deletions. I find it incredible that other sites won't tolerate this.

PamT · 06/01/2003 08:29

It seems ok 'over there' to recommend sites and products as long as they are not your own or you stand to profit from it. Advertising your own products/business is strictly banned as is mentioning parenting sites who are in direct competition. I suppose really like Mumsnet they are not making money out of it and why should they offer free advertising? Promoting get rich quick schemes, pyramid/network marketing or promises of money making schemes (scams) are very much banned but I think this is mainly for the protection of other members. Some of the specialist communities, and there are lots of them, have a lot of information to offer so it isn't all bad.

Enid · 06/01/2003 11:42

Mumsnet is cool! Freedom of speech rules!

Can I just say hello to all new mumsnetters - and please, please pay a subscription if you can possibly afford to?

CAM · 06/01/2003 16:15

hello Easy I can relate to you bigtime as I'm 46 with a 6 year old! I've been on here for a couple of years now and have never seen any age prejudice.

susanmt · 06/01/2003 16:25

I like Mumsnet the best, but also use the Babyworld forum I joined when I was expecting ds. I was 'warned' for mentioing Mumsnet on that forum! I think one of the reasons that Mumsnet keeps the nutters at bay is that there are few gimmicks here - like forums only some folk can join, or a chatroom, where some real weirdos can hang out. There are some sad people out there who frequent parenting sites, but Mumsnet seems relatively free from them (self excluded, of course!!!)

Temptress · 06/01/2003 16:42

Maybe you werent in the best club on babyworld susan..lol. I am in the November club 2001 and the people in there are just lovely.

Lindy · 06/01/2003 16:45

I was going to look at some of the other sites just out of interest, but as I trust mumsnetters' opinions so much I don't think I'll waste my time now!

Wecome Easy - I've also had the grandma comment (44 with an almost two year old) - should we start a 'pseudo-grandma thread'!!

Claireandrich · 06/01/2003 18:31

I use Babyworld as well. I am in the March 2002 antenatal club and the ladies on there are lovely too. I joined that club when I was first pregnant and use it a lot. I sometimes use the other forums too.

I like mumsnet though as well. Only just found it this week and been on most days!!!
