Ghost Hunting

I'm getting really into the idea of ghost hunting, the topic fastinates me...

Anyway, would any of you stay a night in a place which was said to be haunted? Would you stay well away from any spooky places or are you the type to actively seek them?

One place I'd LOVE to visit is the island of Poveglia just off the coast of Venice. Look it up on google if you're into that kind of thing

did you see the episode of scarliest places on earth when they went there?

cornsilk · 03/04/2008 12:16

I would stay if I had plenty of wine to keep me company. Did anything happen on that programme?

bohemianbint · 03/04/2008 12:17

I stayed in a haunted house by myself one night - not on purpose! It was the worst night ever, have never been so scared.

Generally fascinated though, love Most Haunted and go to a local ghost club that runs investigations. Haven't been on one yet though...

MrsSnape · 03/04/2008 12:18

Yes that's what got me going! I loved that episode but I can't find it anywhere on the net and I've forgotton most of what happened when they went.

Apparantly now the island is off limits to the public and police patrol it during the day and leg it back to the mainland as soon as night falls!

I've read a couple of stories off the net of people who claim to got gotten across recently but you never know what to believe on the internet

Oh, I would love to go to Poveglia.... but not sure if I am brave enough...

I am absolutely fascinated by the idea of ghosts, ghost stories, hauntings etc, but I alsoknow I am too much of a chicken to ever want to see a ghost....
(which saddens me in a way, as I would love to investigate the whole idea further)

hippipotami · 03/04/2008 12:20

Oh bohemian, how did you find out about the local ghost hunt club? Would love to join such a group....

Lulumama · 03/04/2008 12:21

come and stay in my house!

MrsSnape · 03/04/2008 12:23

hehe thank god I'm not the only strange one...

On a serious note...if anyone really ever fancies trying to get across to Poveglia, let me know

I too am going to have a search for a local ghost club.

So what happened when they went to the island?

TheDevilWearsPenneys · 03/04/2008 12:26

Ooh I just read the wikipedia entry and it sounds spooky as fuck

hippipotami · 03/04/2008 12:26

Lulu I woud love to! (but am probably not brave enough [gurn])
Do you still have visits by the ghost dog? It was a dog, no?

southeastastra · 03/04/2008 12:27

it was a really good show, much better than most haunted (which is a rip off from it i imagine).

there was an old psychiatric hospital there and all the old equipment was still in place. isn't that the one where you could sort of see and hear someone in one of the old wards. really scary stuff.

MrsSnape · 03/04/2008 12:35

yeah everything was still there, even the old torture equiptment just left abandoned from when it was last used.

In some rooms there were stuff like brains and human hands in jars but I suspect that was planted there for the show, it seemed a bit far fetched even for Poveglia.

no, ghost boy ! my friend stayed in our spare room last weekend, and the ghost visited her too ! he is not scary, only a little boy.

This is spooky

OrmIrian · 03/04/2008 12:39

Nope. I am just too suggestible. The logical daytime part of me says its all rubbish. But I've been in too many situations where fear gets hold of me and I imagine things. Staying somewhere that was widely accepted as haunted would finish me I suspect.

southeastastra · 03/04/2008 12:40

i wish living would re-show scariest places on earth, even though it did get a bit samey at the end of the series. (lots of groups of shouty americans). really remember the catacombs in paris and that southern mansion (magnolia something). the places are scary enough to look at without ghosts.

hippipotami · 03/04/2008 12:45

I live near a converted victorian mental hospital. It is rumoured to be very haunted.
It has been converted into flats, one of my friends (who claims she can see spirits) refuses to in there.
I would love to have a walk around in there, but it is one of those exclusive gated developments (to keep the ghosts in??)

You might be able to download it.

hippipotami · 03/04/2008 12:47

Ah, I remember the boy. I thought there was also a dog, who got upset when you moved dd's cot?? Or am I mixing your boy ghost up with someone else's ghost?

Actually, I would prefer a ghost dog to a ghost boy...

hippipotami · 03/04/2008 12:47

Sorry, that last message was to lulu.

TheDevilWearsPenneys · 03/04/2008 12:47

Have you been to the Catacombs in Paris?
We were the only people in there and it was so scary.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 03/04/2008 12:48

That's fascinating about Poveglia. I don't believe in ghosts (except when taking shortcut across graveyard in pitch black) but it sounds unbelievably creepy. Can you imagine being a plague victim and lying their looking around you at all the corpses, knowing that was going to be you soon....

JodieG1 · 03/04/2008 12:49

there is one there near the end of the page

tiredemma · 03/04/2008 12:49

Some of the old asylums were beautiful buildings with horrific stories. We have many in Bham that have been converted into 'luxury apartments'. I was told that when one became disused, the local fire service asked if they could use the cellars for BA training exercises- apparently they found shackles etc on the walls down there....
