Why do some kids don’t get changed out of their uniform when they get home

Got home from visiting M&D and saw three boys riding their bikes all in uniform - blazer included.

When I was at school I couldn’t wait to get out of my uniform as hated it (thank goodness I didn’t wear a blazer)- it’s the white blouses, never worn anything white (bar undies) since.

They might have gone to a friend's house to play straight from school?

Guavafish1 · 26/04/2024 18:59

Can't be bothered!

You’re assuming they have something to get changed into
Or they’ve not been home yet and gone straight out with their mates
Or they’re lazy

vodkaredbullgirl · 26/04/2024 19:09

It's Friday why not 😆

AnthuriumCrystallinum · 26/04/2024 19:12

School uniform used to be expensive and difficult to clean (hello dry clean only blazers and skirts!), not to mention uncomfortable so we'd all take it off as soon as we got in.

Modern uniforms are generally cheaper than regular clothes, comfortable and machine washable, so less incentive to change.

WonkyBricks · 26/04/2024 19:13

I mean I don't see the point in dirtying another set of clothes before PJs go on at 7. If my kids are comfy then I leave them to it. If they go to a friend's then they usually take a change of clothes with them in their school bag.

Needmorelego · 26/04/2024 19:14

They probably haven't been home yet.

Walkthelakes · 26/04/2024 19:14

Mine don’t get changed out of uniform after school. It’s comfy—all jersey and they’ve got 5 sets. Why would I want them to get changed for an hour before they are in their jimmies?

Invisimamma · 26/04/2024 19:15

Because it's double the washing and school uniform is super cheap?

Princesspollyyy · 26/04/2024 19:15

I used to stay in my school uniform until it was time to get ready for bed. What's the big issue with it?

Youdontevengohere · 26/04/2024 19:17

Why dirty another set of clothes? My childrens’ uniform is just a polo shirt, trousers and a sweatshirt, so no different to many other clothes.

EventuallyDecluttered · 26/04/2024 19:17

It's comfy, practical and easy to wash, mine never used to at primary age unless they were going somewhere (other than just playing out).

Icanseethebeach · 26/04/2024 19:17

My kids wear comfortable uniform. By the time we walk home it’s nearly 4 and they’re in the bath at 6. Unless they choose to change I don’t make them.

bluetopazlove · 26/04/2024 19:18

My mum when I think back on it must have done it for saving on the washing . She worked there was no childcare and of course the only reason I can only think of was washing .

MeadStMary · 26/04/2024 19:18

Unless we are going out somewhere, my dc stay in their uniform until they get into pyjamas at bedtime. They wear clean uniform every day so I'm not going to create extra washing for no reason.

Kindleonfire · 26/04/2024 19:22

My kids stay in their uniform. They're still at primary though so it's quite comfy. If we were going somewhere after school then they might want to change, but if they're just playing they usually stay in their uniform.

I buy a uniform for each day cos I CBA with making sure its clean and ironed midweek. Not sure how that will work with secondary.

danitheastrologer · 26/04/2024 19:24

Personally I have them take uniforms off in the house but none of us wear outside clothes in the house. My sister lets her kids keep uniforms on as long as they want. Every family is different.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/04/2024 19:24

My mother didn't want to wash more than one skirt, two blouses, a t-shirt and 3 pairs of socks per week, so that's why I didn't get changed - it might have meant the horror of doing two 5kg loads a week.

(And yes, I know the maths doesn't add up for normal people. Let's just say that the August bedlinen wash was a very special day and leave it at that).

Droolylabradors · 26/04/2024 19:28

My children have never got changed. I didn't say they couldn't, they just never did. Now teens.

Dewdilly · 26/04/2024 19:30

I never got changed after school, and neither did my DC.

Kalevala · 26/04/2024 19:34

DS removed blazer and tie at home. Often was about town in full uniform after school though. If he came home then went out he'd put on trainers and a hoodie with uniform. He found it comfortable, they are just clothes.

TadpolesInPool · 26/04/2024 19:35

Ive always got changed and so has DH and DC. Just to be more comfy (to be fair my uniform was blouse, skirt and tie from age 4).

We all have "home clothes" - joggers and a tshirt that are worn again and again until dirty. They dont go in the wash after one wear.

Kalevala · 26/04/2024 19:37

There wasn't always school and home clothes the same as today. Children played out for hours in shorts, shirt, wool jumper, shoes or boots, without an issue.

NearlyHeadlessNick · 26/04/2024 19:38

My son is 6. It usually has dinner/mud/craft materials on it somewhere. I'm not giving him clean clothes to dirty for his tea before bath and bed.

User284732 · 26/04/2024 19:42

I only make mine get changed if they have an activity or we are meeting people, and only because I'd feel judged otherwise. It doesn't seem practical though or environmentally friendly as they are just creating more laundry.
