Why do some kids don’t get changed out of their uniform when they get home

Got home from visiting M&D and saw three boys riding their bikes all in uniform - blazer included.

When I was at school I couldn’t wait to get out of my uniform as hated it (thank goodness I didn’t wear a blazer)- it’s the white blouses, never worn anything white (bar undies) since.

Not everyone has the (to me, slightly weird) Mn addiction to ripping off work clothes and bra practically on the door mat and getting into pyjamas the second you’re home.

Iamtheoneinten · 26/04/2024 19:42

If you've got fuck all money, and you're obliged to buy a school uniform just so your children can attend school, there might not be much in the way of other clothes to change in to.

Weighnow · 26/04/2024 19:47

I never made mine change, no point getting another set of clothes dirty, but I'd imagine older kids out on bikes haven't been home.

I mean I don't see the point in dirtying another set of clothes before PJs go on at 7. If my kids are comfy then I leave them to it. If they go to a friend's then they usually take a change of clothes with them in their school bag.

I agree with this. Mine have fresh uniform every day and we don't get home until about 5. I just don't need the extra fuss or laundry.

I get home from work at 3:30pm and I get changed into hanging around at home clothes which i change every 2-4 days

You’re assuming they have something to get changed into
Or they’ve not been home yet and gone straight out with their mates
Or they’re lazy

What proportion of children do you really think have no clothes other than school uniform? Do you think there are children with no other clothes who wear school uniform all weekend too?

HelpMeUnpickThis · 26/04/2024 20:02

I grew up being forced to change immediately.

I do ask my girls to change but they have to wear the play clothes more than once otherwise the washing is insane.

PoppyCherryDog · 26/04/2024 21:24

I sometimes did and sometimes didn’t when I was at school. But our uniform wasn’t fancy just sweatshirt and polo shirt.

SpringBunnies · 26/04/2024 21:27

Mine just can't be bothered. DC secondary is polo and sweatshirt. I assume it's quite comfortable to wear.

DelurkingAJ · 26/04/2024 21:28

Never occurred to me that this was a thing. Even when work meant a suit and heels I just kicked off the heels when I got home unless I was actively doing something else. I never felt the need.

Previousreligion · 26/04/2024 21:30

I never got changed after school back in the 90s. I had a long commute so wouldn't get home until 1730 and it never seemed worth it. It's not like I needed to impress anyone, no point in getting other clothes dirty, I didn't care at all about fashion and didn't find my uniform uncomfy.

I never change my work clothes after work either.

PangolinPan · 26/04/2024 21:35

I tried to get to change during COVID but it just turned in yet another battle and I try to pick those wisely.
I never changed out of my school clothes but I definitely put comfies on as soon as I get in, if I don't have to go out again.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 26/04/2024 21:44

Because his taxi doesn't get home until almost 5pm most night and changing him would involve hoisting him out of his chair, onto his bed to undress then redress, hoisting him off his bed and back into his chair. Getting dressed/undressed sparks his dystonia into action and then that makes doing his dinner almost impossible for me and distressing for him, he's tube fed and a meal can take 45 minutes at the best of times. Add to that doing his medications and his twice daily chest physio as well as a bath a couple of night a week and there are not enough hours in the evening to get it all done before bed time at around 7pm.

SeeingRainbowsInTheGloom · 26/04/2024 21:45

I was at school in the 70s and 80s. It never occurred to me to change out of uniform. Pretty sure I didn't have enough clothes for that to be an option. And I don't remember any of my friends changing either, and I'm surprised that it's seen as normal now.

Steppingintome · 26/04/2024 22:23

Me and DH have both said we couldn’t wait to get changed after school but DC3 refuses to change. She gets home I say ooo go change and il make you a snack, she says yer in a bit. Then il say go get changed for tea, she says oh I’m starving il change when I’m done and sits watching tv in full uniform. I then say after tea right go change into something more comfortable, I get yer yer it’s not that deep! Haha. Other two used to get changed as soon as they got home.

BitOutOfPractice · 26/04/2024 22:26

Because they’re not you?

Elephantswillnever · 26/04/2024 22:26

My kids are mucky so get a fresh set of uniform daily . I’d rather not have them create two sets of laundry per day.

Saschka · 26/04/2024 22:29

If DS is doing a sport then he changes, but otherwise why bother?

We get home between 5-6 (depending on clubs), he eats tea, has a bath and into bed by 8pm. No point putting on different clothes for an hour or two.

DappledThings · 26/04/2024 22:33

I've never found any of my clothes, including school uniform, uncomfortable and have therefore never had any impetus to get changed. DC only get changed now if they have another activity to go that requires different clothing.

StarDolphins · 26/04/2024 22:36

I leave my DD’s uniform on, it gets washed every day anyway! No point putting PJ’s on at 4pm as we have to walk the dog later & if she puts ‘normal’ clothes on, it’s another set of clothes to wash!

Yes there are definitely children who wear school uniform all weekend as they do have any other clothes.

There are plenty more who do not have enough outfits to wear a clean one every day of the week, as well as school uniform. DS has plenty of clothes and I’d still need to do an extra load of washing for him to change into clean non-school clothes every night. We have a washer/dryer in the flat, but lots of people would have to schlep to the laundrette.

Jux · 26/04/2024 22:47

It's unnecessary. Even back in the 60s I don't remember doing it, and we wore white shirts and ties! Clean shirt every day, clean underwear and socks, but same skirt all week, same tie all through primary until they changed the uniform and we no longer needed ties; I think I only had one school skirt anyway. I do remember putting it on when I was 12 and being quite surprised when mu said it was the same skirt I'd worn since the day I started. It was very short by then!

I didn't suggest that children have enough non-uniform clothes to wear a clean set every evening. I didn't, and I don't wear a clean set every evening after work even now, as an ageing adult.

I don't think there will be many children who don't have any clothes at all other than school uniform, though.

Perhaps for the same reason some OP's don't bother check or correct their title once they've written it even though it grammatically shit

Katkins17 · 26/04/2024 22:52

Every family is different. My son gets changed out of his uniform before dinner and put is pj's on.

He's comfy ...,and unless his uniform is dirty, he wears it the next day.
He's just turned 13 so he might start getting sweaty and smelly, so it will go straight into the wash instead.
