Why do some kids don’t get changed out of their uniform when they get home

notedbiscuits · 26/04/2024 18:58

Got home from visiting M&D and saw three boys riding their bikes all in uniform - blazer included.

When I was at school I couldn’t wait to get out of my uniform as hated it (thank goodness I didn’t wear a blazer)- it’s the white blouses, never worn anything white (bar undies) since.

Who are M and D?

Watchthedoormat · 27/04/2024 21:18

My DC always changed as I liked to get their uniforms straight in the wash after school- if needed.
If any of the uniform items were clean I'd also plan on keeping it that way so they could wear it the next day tbh.
My DC never had five 'sets'. Usually two or three.
We couldn't afford five jumpers, five trousers etc for both my children.

Mum and dad, presumably!

My son is 6. It usually has dinner/mud/craft materials on it somewhere. I'm not giving him clean clothes to dirty for his tea before bath and bed.

This.
Why dirty another set of clothes?

Needmorelego · 27/04/2024 21:31

@DappledThings@AllProperTeaIsTheft you must be lucky with the materials you get to wear.
My work uniform trousers were horrible thick material that weren't very flexible, the shirts also quite thick - a horrible texture and never felt like they fit properly (unfortunately it was the type of uniform that you had to pick a size from the pile and hope for the best).
Try as I might - there was no way I could flop down on the sofa, curl up and chill wearing those.
(School uniform clothes aren't much better unless it's the primary school casual type)
Plus I think I had a hatred of my old work uniform because I didn't like my job and I don't like formal school uniforms - so I am very "off....get it off" 😂

I don't know, I just don't find any clothes uncomfortable in that way. It comes up a lot on hear, people say they can't imagine relaxing on the sofa in jeans or taking a nap in jeans and I just don't get it. Just because denim is stiffer than joggers doesn't make it uncomfortable to me.

Same. The only time I’ve been uncomfortable in any clothes is when they’ve been too small. Otherwise I can wear anything!

mitogoshi · 27/04/2024 21:50

I never changed out of mine nor did my kids, why dirty more clothes

Kalevala · 27/04/2024 21:53

Needmorelego · 27/04/2024 19:47

All these that say they don't get changed after work either - do people really feel comfortable lounging around on their sofa wearing formal trousers, stiff shirt, blazer and a tie (which is what most secondary uniforms are) ?
The OP said she saw lads on bikes in blazers - so to me secondary age kids - not those in the polo shirt/trackies primary combo which many people are commenting about !
My work uniform was horrible trousers that weren't very comfortable and a formal shirt that was hot - I used to get changed (or at least shirt to t-shirt) before I even left work 😂

DS's school trousers were just the kind with adjustable elastic, shirts weren't stiff, just m&s, pretty comfortable.

Needmorelego · 27/04/2024 21:54

@DappledThings I am the opposite - I can't understand how people can be comfortable in certain materials or outfits 😂
Literally the only clothes I find actually comfortable are trackies/loungewear/pj bottoms, loose t-shirts, loose hoodies and nighties.
Anything else I am counting down the minutes before I can take the damm stuff off.

EventuallyDecluttered · 27/04/2024 22:45

I'm another that's comfy in anything so long as it's not too tight (or wool because it makes me itch).

HcbSS · 27/04/2024 23:22

The amount of kids I see at the gym getting changed back into school uniform after swimming/tennis lessons. Why not stick a tracksuit/leggings and t-shirt in your kit bag?

Why? What difference does it make?

Supersimkin2 · 27/04/2024 23:42

DM wouldn’t have washed extra clothes. Even if I’d had enough own clothes for a week.

Walkthelakes · 26/04/2024 19:14

Mine don’t get changed out of uniform after school. It’s comfy—all jersey and they’ve got 5 sets. Why would I want them to get changed for an hour before they are in their jimmies?

5 sets!? What on earth for?

EnglishBluebell · 28/04/2024 00:16

danitheastrologer · 26/04/2024 19:24

Personally I have them take uniforms off in the house but none of us wear outside clothes in the house. My sister lets her kids keep uniforms on as long as they want. Every family is different.

I couldn't live like that. Treating clothes like radioactive waste, just because they've been outside. I mean, we take our shoes off of course. But taking clothes off just because you've been outside is an entirely new level of OCD

Babaero · 28/04/2024 00:17

Why dirty more clothes? I also have five sets of uniform for dc….they always come home messy and I don’t have much time for mid week washing

notedbiscuits · 28/04/2024 06:40

I wear the same top and trousers after work for 3 days.

I don’t get kids wearing blazers after school especially when most have just the one.

My school had a stupid rule that we had to change into our uniform to go home, if your PE lesson was last period.

I always sneaked behind the changing room mobile to leave in the gap between hedge and fence. As I lived ten minutes walk from the school in those days.

Mistredd · 28/04/2024 06:46

Mine have never asked to and seems a waste to make them, creating more washing, if they are happy in their uninform. I never got changed as a child, so it doesn’t seem normal to me. But I’ve read before on mumsnet people who see it as essential.

Peonies12 · 28/04/2024 07:18

Because they don’t want to?

It's a jacket, it won't get dirty from riding bikes, only if they were playing up in the woods or something. They also wash and dry easily if it needs a wash on the occasional weekend.

Familiaritybreedscontemptso · 28/04/2024 07:47

My dc only get changed if they have another activity after school. They are comfy in their school uniforms and have a new set each day so I don’t make them get changed. I don’t usually change myself either. DH does religiously, but then he’d also wear shoes in the house if I let him. It’s almost like we’re all different and might feel comfortable doing different things.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 28/04/2024 07:56

My dds stay in them sometimes as they can’t be bothered to change. If they’re cold they will change into pyjamas and oodies. When I was a teen I couldn’t wait to change out of uniform, same with my work clothes now. I don’t wear uniform but my work clothes are my work clothes.

One for every day of the week. Cheap as chips from Asda and I don’t need to worry about having to wash mid week if they get covered in paint/ play dough / food. I mean I could prob make do with 3 but the extra £10 for the whole year to not even have to consider a mid week uniform wash make it worth it for me
