Why do some kids don’t get changed out of their uniform when they get home

Got home from visiting M&D and saw three boys riding their bikes all in uniform - blazer included.

When I was at school I couldn’t wait to get out of my uniform as hated it (thank goodness I didn’t wear a blazer)- it’s the white blouses, never worn anything white (bar undies) since.

It's unnecessary. Even back in the 60s I don't remember doing it, and we wore white shirts and ties! Clean shirt every day, clean underwear and socks, but same skirt all week, same tie all through primary until they changed the uniform and we no longer needed ties; I think I only had one school skirt anyway. I do remember putting it on when I was 12 and being quite surprised when mu said it was the same skirt I'd worn since the day I started. It was very short by then!

Well my mum worked full time we wore a clean shirt twice a week we never got changed after school , there was no childcare back in the 70s and on the Sundays my mum would do laundry in the twin tub , she worked really hard my mum .

My son is like this. It drives me mad. He doesn't even take his blazer off. He's got loads of comfy clothes to change into but no! Very odd. He's fine, he says.

littletesco · 27/04/2024 08:54

Just found out my 13 year old is wearing thin trackies and one of those really thin footie T shirts under his uniform so he can do a quick change 😭 don't ask me why! Sure it's a phase. I remember catching one of my others sleeping in her uniform at that age so she could just get up ready for school

TheSnowyOwl · 27/04/2024 09:01

The school uniform is usually already grubby from climbing trees at school or rolling around on the field, so adding to the filth by being out on a bike seems sensible. Otherwise I’d have two lots of grubby clothes to clean.

LynetteScavo · 27/04/2024 19:17

Laziness- I hated my school uniform but still didn't change when I got home- my mum used to tell me to go and get changed. Teens are weird.

I can't wait to get out of my work clothes these days, and I wear clothes I like to work. It seems wrong to lounge about in them though. And I'm no longer a lazy teen. I'd have probably quite happily slept in my uniform and got up ready for school the next day HmmSadGrin

whiteroseredrose · 27/04/2024 19:24

Why would you? I never got changed when I got home from work, even when I wore a uniform, or a business suit.

Clearinguptheclutter · 27/04/2024 19:25

Mine don’t unless going to cubs/scouts or football

Iamtheoneinten · 27/04/2024 19:26

Do you think there are children with no other clothes who wear school uniform all weekend too?

Why, do you think there aren’t?
Do you also think there aren’t children that are left to go hungry everyday?
Or unwashed?

I guess that’s why children in poverty is on the increase in the UK, when there are people who content to just not see it.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/04/2024 19:33

Why get two outfits dirty every day? I don't understand the sad faces about it. They're just clothes. Teens care about what they are seen wearing by their peers. Once they're at home they don't care. Uniform clearly isn't particularly uncomfortable if they are happy to stay in it all evening.

I'm a teacher but am not a fan of uniform, as I think it's old-fashioned and completely unnecessary, but once you're wearing it I don't particularly see the urgent need to change out of it!

EventuallyDecluttered · 27/04/2024 19:34

DH and I never change after work unless its into sports gear or smart going out gear (the latter is rare, if we're just eg going to the pub we'd stay in whatever we'd worn to work that day), we both have casual dress codes and don't get dirty at work.

Jaminajar · 27/04/2024 19:43

We take uniform off and shower then into clean clothes straightaway after school each day. They sit on the carpet at school where people have walked over in outside shoes 🤢

Jaminajar · 27/04/2024 19:43

We have a clean set of uniform each morning too

rollonretirementfgs · 27/04/2024 19:43

Because they are probably going in the wash that night and their mum doesn't want to dirty ANOTHER set of clothes as well as Pyjamas!

Jifmicroliquid · 27/04/2024 19:44

I never understood this as a kid. I hated being in my uniform and changed out of it straight away. It meant that my jumper and skirt could do a couple of days aswell.

Really? Ive always changed out of work clothes. I feel grubby by the end of s work day and I want comfy clothes for the house.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/04/2024 19:46

I don't change after work either. There's quite a lot of crossover between my work wardrobe and my non-work wardrobe. I don't wear anything to work that is uncomfortable or that I'd be worried about creasing or getting dirty. Life's too short to wear uncomfortable clothes!

DarkDarkNight · 27/04/2024 19:46

My son can’t be bothered. Have to nag him a bless he has an activity on that night. I don’t understand why because he finds it uncomfortable and it would only take a couple of minutes to put something else on.

Needmorelego · 27/04/2024 19:47

All these that say they don't get changed after work either - do people really feel comfortable lounging around on their sofa wearing formal trousers, stiff shirt, blazer and a tie (which is what most secondary uniforms are) ?
The OP said she saw lads on bikes in blazers - so to me secondary age kids - not those in the polo shirt/trackies primary combo which many people are commenting about !
My work uniform was horrible trousers that weren't very comfortable and a formal shirt that was hot - I used to get changed (or at least shirt to t-shirt) before I even left work 😂

Yes. I've never found any clothes to be noticeably uncomfortable or to prevent me relaxing. The trope of women flinging their bras off the second they get home is utterly alien to me.

EventuallyDecluttered · 27/04/2024 20:09

Cycling in a blazer would be fine, they are lightweight nowadays not the heavy wool type we wore. Take it off to sit on the sofa yes, because that's like taking your coat off. I guess most would take their tie off then too. But shirt and trousers or skirt are comfy enough.

CharismaticMegafauna · 27/04/2024 20:23

I always got changed out of my uniform. I didn't particularly like it and didn't want to feel like I was still at school when I was at home. My children always get changed as well into something more comfortable than shirt and tie.

I don't think they are generally stiff at all. They are made of normal materials. The blazer might be a bit stiffer, but I doubt that most kids keep their blazer on when they get home, although some may. Surely if they do, that's pretty much proof that it's not uncomfortable?

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 27/04/2024 20:53

Because my kids come home with their uniform needing to go in the wash anyway, and then they're very likely to spill tea on themselves. Why on earth would I get them changed when they come home for them to dirty yet more clothes? And as a PP mentioned, the uniform policy for our primary school isn't really strict so it's all cheap stuff from George or similar so not too expensive to replace if it did get damaged.

The only exception to this is school shoes, if they went out on their bikes after school they would change in to trainers.

Fiery30 · 27/04/2024 21:09

I don't get it either. I would always get out of uniform, change into comfortable clothes and then go to play or to the shops with mom. Can't imagine being in the same clothes all day, presumably dirty, sweaty from being at school.

SplitFountainPen · 27/04/2024 21:12

danitheastrologer · 26/04/2024 19:24

Personally I have them take uniforms off in the house but none of us wear outside clothes in the house. My sister lets her kids keep uniforms on as long as they want. Every family is different.

Do you all change every time you get home? Even just after the park or the shop for example?
