Welcome!

gio71 · 02/05/2008 22:53

seen the first few- we have a garden with orange and lemon trees, ivy and all other kinds of things that mozzies seem to love. I thought it was beautiful when I first saw it - the last few years I have hated it as we havent been able to go out in it it's so bad. So this year we are spraying and zapping and are going to win!

Brangelina · 02/05/2008 23:03

Eek! So ivy is a mozzie magnet? DP's only just gone and bought a whole load to artfully drape around our porta finestre and over our balcony....

Rosa · 03/05/2008 07:59

Lavender is a wasp magnet if thats any help !!!
Our comp is stuffed so have loaded up yee ancient laptop. Took dd out to beach yesterday and had lunch in place with huge prato and daisies ( and NO dog poo) she had a fantastic day and depite sun cream /hat she has red cheeks . I bought the cream in I think June or Sept last year do you think its expired ..It was expensive Avene childrens stuff !
Sunny here today and so have to go and dig out more summer stuff for dd I am easy have only 1 pair of tsers that fit.
Have a good day all.. I didn't have any Fave cos I forgot to buy them.
Sputnikk hope your dcs oar ok . DD had a swab teh other week ( and a hissy fit !!)

gio71 · 03/05/2008 08:09

dont think it's ivy as such Brange, think it's more our general laziness at clearing fallen leaves etc- which apparently they like. That's the other part of our war against them-stop being so lazy and try and discover the English in me and enjoy gardening
I am going to get a deckchair out and sit outside all afternoon and do nothing today (bar bit of said gardening)-hopefully ds will oblige and have a lovely long sleep
What factor suncream do you use Rosa? Also-do you guys put suncream on your dcs from now on-ie if out for walk in stroller or just if they have a long pperiod outside like beach or park?

PippiCalzelunghe · 03/05/2008 15:03

yes do advise me as well about suncreams too...

also is it okay for newborn to have green poo...

sorry not rude just not much time to chat with aforementioned newborn .

Rosa · 03/05/2008 16:26

Well I am according to MIL OTT but I burnt as a child and had a permanent peeling nose . I also believe that seeing that skin cancer is on the increase ( just look at the Australians- children there are not permitted into the playground if they dont wear a hat and putting sun cream on is like washing your hands.) SO yes DD starts off the day with factor 50 put on when get dressed. Face, arms ( from yesterday really) and exposed areas. She then wears a hat on in the sun. When sun is still hot in pm it gets repeated. She has a selction of styles of hats, caps, bandanas ( bandane ????) also Dh has pretty delecate skin and eyes so hers is bound to be the same. Dh wears factor 30 daily and he would wear 50 if we could find one that doesnt sting his eyes when he sweats !! Or doesnt come out in a thick impossible to rub in cream.
Green poo - if acid green and continues then check with doc. If green sort of muddy, probably something you ate and I wouldnt worry. DD did a massive yellow one when I had risotto a zafferano !!!!

francagoestohollywood · 03/05/2008 17:19

Green poo: what rosa said. I seem to remember it's quite normal.

Suncream: I'm ashamed to say that I'm a bit superficial in the suncream department. We just use it when we are at the beach , factor 30.

Sputnik I have a ds who will be 6 in July and a dd who'll be 4 on the 23rd of may.

OP posts:
Rosa · 03/05/2008 17:43

23 May my dads birthday ... A great day .
Franca also think your skin base has something to do with it. Remember I am a bianco anglo saxon... Dh is an exception as he has pale skin as well.

Brangelina · 03/05/2008 20:42

at Gio's deckchair in the garden.

Green poo - well once they used to say it meant that baby wasn't getting enough of the hindmilk but since the fore/hindmilk theory was proved to be not true it apparently means nothing. My DD had a real green poo period between 3 and 4 months and at the consultorio they told me it was perfectly normal, you only have to worry if there's mucus in the poo(ie, if it looks like you've sneezed in it - sorry if tmi). So Pippi, if DD2 is happy and putting on weight nicely then you've nothing to worry about. My DD's poo was quite often green after I ate spinach too (never did figure out how the green particles reconstituted themselves from white milk ... Weird huh?)

Sun cream - I'm afraid, like Franca, I'm somewhat superficial about it except on the beach, but then we're all olive skinned in the Brange household. DD has been out in the garden at nursery in the last few days and she's already got a tiny bit of colour. It's not like she's in direct sunlight for hours, it's only about 15/20mins here and there so not too damaging imo and good for vitamiin D and healthy bones. I'm also a bit sceptical about all the nasty chemicals in suncreams (even the kiddie ones) so prefer to use the stuff only when strictly necessary. I didn't put any cream on DD until she was about 1yo for that reason, would never use it on a baby.

Sputnik · 03/05/2008 21:08

I usually put sun cream on DD (DS too small last summer for anything excpt total shade) only if she'll be in the sun long periods, but both of them have DH's very dark skin (which I am jealous of, being the worst white/pink celtic skin type for living here - in fact I can never pass for Italian).

I try and keep them generally in the shade though, and am fanatical about shade on the beach. Probably excessive for most Italians, I remember someone commenting about DD on her 1st birthday that she didn't have much of a tan

The mozzies have got really bad since the zanzara tigre arrived, we used to hardly have them here (we're half-way up a mountain), now we have them all day.

DD is strep negative but has a really sore throat, unfortunatly that hasn't shut her up (she has hit the "why" phase big time).

Brangelina · 03/05/2008 21:16

We've got the "why?" phase too. She will keep going even if given exhaustively detailed and plausible explanations. I now make up the answers then quickly say things like "oh, look at that cat/dog/funny man..."

The funny thing is before I actually had a child I always thought fobbing off with crappy answers was not very conducive to a healthy intellectual development and I'd always said I would take time to explain properly. When it came to the crunch I lasted about 2 weeks.

Sputnik · 03/05/2008 21:23

Yeah me too. But how exactly are you meant to answer the question "why is the computer?".
And "where is Daddy?", "Daddy's at work", "where does he work?" etc etc gets rather boring after the 50th time. How old is your DD Brangelina?

Brangelina · 03/05/2008 21:46

She'll be 3 in July, so that's, um... 2 and 9 months.

Yep, it's the same questions day in day out. I'm so glad someone else's child does the same, I was beginning to worry that mine had inherited her Dad's apalling memory....

PippiCalzelunghe · 04/05/2008 07:12

morning. thank you all. we are not that great with suncream either, except on the beach of in really hot days in england (those where you see all these white anglosaxons burnt to death after a day roasting inhyde park!). but think I should do more. dd1 has got daddy's skin (dark like an italian, and tans very easily.

green poo. I should have explained. dd is still a bit jaundiced so HV booked a blood test for tuesday. I do not think there's nothing to worry about, and so does she. but then I saw the poo and though maybe they could be connected.

very today about elections here too. devastated about ken livingstone not being mayor anymore and buffon boris taking his place. nothing as bad as rome though or italy so should not complain too much I guess. hothell where are ya???

gio71 · 04/05/2008 08:19

I am so re UK elections Pippi, surely UK cant be getting ready to get the Tories back..............
I may have to switch off from UK politics-don't know if can cope with the level of disappointment I have in 2 countries now.
Deckchair scenario didnt go as planned. DP got deckchair out of shed for me as requested to check it for spiders, left it open and by the time I got out the bloody horrible stray cat that lurks and fights and sprays CONSTANTLY in our garden was sitting in it. Really don't fancy sitting it now, God knows how many fleas it's got. We have so many cats round here thanks to the presence of 2 gattare in our building. They are really feral though and object to us going in the garden... So anyway in the end I dug out the flimsy sunlounger that hasn't been the same since I reclined on it weighing in like a baby elephant when pg with ds and precariously reclined with a book waiting for it to collapse any second until ds woke up 20 mins later. Not relaxing pm I was after.
Thanks for sunscreen advice-am pretty haphazard as well.

Sputnik · 04/05/2008 13:32

Don't worry PCL (how do you like to be abbreviated? I hesitate to call you pippi), both mine had jaundice and got over it ok. I put DS in the sun a little and it seemed to help. How old is your baby? Must be realy little [thinks gooey newborn thoughts].

PippiCalzelunghe · 04/05/2008 17:16

pippi's fine sputnik .

she's 4 weeks and I'm sure she's fine. think the green poo is due to the fact that I gave her some expressed milk from the sterilized bottle. might not be exactly the same as straight from the boobs. who knows...

I much prefer it with two kids. now it's one on one for both of us which is much more fair tbh. many times this weekend we've looked at eachother thinking 'should we just run???'

Rosa · 04/05/2008 17:29

Gio try bottles of water left out and wipe over in bleach where the cats go and crap ...It is supposed to worn them off.. I Have only poured neat bleach over my steps when lived on Piano terra and got fed up with it. Not a good idea with ds round.. SO you did not manage to garden a bit then ????
Brange what is the name of the nasty chemical that is cancer linked in sun cream ?..Have been trying to find it. So can try to avoid it. I seem to be the only one with delicate dd skin . I went in local eboristeria and they diddn't have any suggestions on sun cream !!! They did try to sell me a hand cream for 10 e !!
Went to agriturismo today dd refused to eat the lasange ( menu fisso ) 'dont like it' so it was bread and carrots for her am hoping she will eat well tonight .Pippi let us know how dd2 gets on.Hot Hot anybody heard of Hot its been ages !

Sputnik · 04/05/2008 21:50

Anyone else noticed how in Italy anything over factor 20 is for kids?

We bought a sun lounger today as we had exactly the same problem as you Gio with stray cats on the old one, which was cloth. Not sure when I'll actually get any time to lounge on it though...

francagoestohollywood · 05/05/2008 13:02

Rosa, have you tried Dr Hautschka? it might have sun cream without nasty chemicals. and weleda also does suncreams if I remember well. Yes it is true, I'm superficial because we have olive complexion, plus there's this cultural thing for italians - as we always laugh about it on here - that wind will kill you, while the sun is good , which we know is not true, unfortunately.

Sputnik when are you off to the uk?

Gio lol at being disappointed in not one but two countries . I feel the same, mind you. I asked fil re the mosquitoes machine, but he couldn't remember the name and the machine is somewhere in the cantina. Apparently it's a machine invented for the Americans in Vietnam .....

I have spent the whole weekend trying to do as little as possible as I was devouring "we need to talk about Kevin", which I really loved.

Pippi, how's the jaundice? Put dd2 by the window!

hotHELL · 05/05/2008 15:58

HI guys, been away from the computer, banned myself from it last week after spending a whole pm mumsnetting, looking at babyrazzi site, and then youtube, and then reading newspapers online, then realising that i hadnt concluded anything, spoken to a human being, etc. With no internet, i manage more work, speak to more friends etc, but i am back to say hello, read the whole thread, for jaundice yes, i would put the baby by the window, suncream we don't put it on ds immediately when we go out, so we wait a bit, as sunshine good for vitamin d, on beach we avoid the midday hours of course. I am super constipated, and like pippi have piles, will need to get some cream. Pippi what did you use 2nd time round to avoid constipation? And no Franca, i do not do supposte, scary stuff. Enjoy the sun, have to finish some work before ds comes back from sleepover, ciaooooooo! (bloody Boris i cannot believe he got in london!!!!!!!) For the green poo, I would speak to the gp just in case, but probably normal. With ds i remember incredibly yellow poos....

francagoestohollywood · 05/05/2008 16:05

lol, I have an appalling addiction to babyrazzi . welcome back, don't ban yourself for too long though
