Hey,
I'm not really sure how to use this website so apologies if wrong.
So I'm at my mother in laws house for Xmas and she had just brought herself this VERY expensive sofa for herself as a self gift.
she has just had it delivered today and its a brand new white sofa, as I have two boys (6 and 7) I told them not to go on it but my mother in law INSISTED they could go on it.
they had just finished watching TV and were getting ready for bed when my husband alerted me to the fact that someone had obviously eaten a baby-bell and than somehow sat on the wax, there is now a VERY noticeable red patch on the sofa.
I have removed the excess wax but there is still a stain.
my boys and mother in law are in bed now but I dont know how to remove it.
me and my husband dont have the money to replace this sofa and my mother in law doesn't really like me as it is.
Does anyone know how to remove cheese wax from a sofa?
Thanks.

Can you just turn the cushion over (and leave asap)

This was going to be my suggestion, too.

Feign ignorance.

Say the boys must have turned it over when they realised what they'd done.

White sofas are barely compatible with very sensible adults, let alone children of any age (or pets).

Katbum · 30/12/2023 11:37

Don’t touch it. Hire a cleaning company - depending on where you are should cost between £80 and £120. I’ve had a lot of luck with upholstery cleaners so always go for that option with a bad stain.

but agree with pps that this is majorly your husband’s issue to sort with his mum.

CateringPanic · 30/12/2023 11:37

@jennan When we bought our brand new sofa it came with a stain removal kit and if that didn’t work 5 year stain removal warranty. Is it worth looking to see if anything similar has come with your MILs new sofa?

We have just tried the iron and we managed to scrape a bit more wax of but the color is still there.
My mil doesn't have any ice🤦. My husbands just about to go to the local morrisons to get some.
I just might start buying my kids blocks of cheese instead of the wax covered ones 🤣.

You both sound daft.

Whispering and giggling about the damage, refusing to take any responsibility for what’s happened and driving to the supermarket at midnight to buy ice?

How is ice meant to remove red dye? That advice was for hardening wax.

If you did need ice in the middle of the night you’d use common sense and use something frozen from the freezer.

God help you both in an actual emergency.

Monkeytapper · 30/12/2023 11:47

Can you show us a photo of it?

Frabbits · 30/12/2023 11:48

It's probably stained from the dye in the wax now, ironing it/ icing it/using random products on it etc is not going to do any good - likely it will actually make it worse.

Assuming the cushion is removable take it to a professional, or get one in. Failing that, you might be able to get a replacement cover from the place it was bought from.

My 6yo, and most 6yos I know.
you clear don't have kids that age*

I have a 5 year old 😂
Who is perfectly capable of sitting nicely to eat. They’re not babies! However I would have made them move away from the sofa to eat, I am quite sure sitting on the 1 day old white sofa wasn’t the only option!

Let me guess, 1 girl child.

Come back when you have a boy
or a child or 2 with ADHD and then tell us a 5 year old is perfectly capable of sitting nicely on a sofa

I had a white sofa when dc were born and had a dog and cats. (It was new when we moved as dog had eaten our previous sofa that we had for 20 years)

I used baby bottle sterilising solution on stains and it was one that you could unzip the covers and throw them in the washing machine (I had a top loading washing machine which was huge)

In winter I used throws as dog had muddy paws and would bound in from walks and jump straight on the sofa with muddy paws

Having a white sofa and children is not as daft as it sounds, it depends on the actual material.

I don’t think this sofa was that expensive if the manufacturer has saved on material by putting cheaper fabric on the bottom of cushions so you can’t flip them
(I always look at that when looking at sofas)

Yalta · 30/12/2023 11:57

I would have used the ice method first as I was going to say that heating baby bel wax would stain the fabric. If it had stained then sterilising solution dabbed on the stain and then waiting an hour before dabbing again to make sure you don’t create a “white stain”

Itslegitimatesalvage · 30/12/2023 11:57

@Yalta

Its not cheaper fabric underneath. Quite often with expensive sofas, it’s a non-slip darker fabrics underneath so the seats stay in place better. You really shouldn’t have to flip sofa cushions. People should be able to take care of their things and the kids here should have been supervised.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/12/2023 12:04

Oh no!!
I see you have got most of the wax off, but the red stain is still there
I would try dabbing with a damp cloth and fairy liquid
Mine are adults now but i still remember a trampled in the carpet incident

Anyone had a Sudocrem disaster? The one time it would have been preferable eh?

Harrriet · 30/12/2023 12:09

Blame who ever makes Babybelle cheese.
It was an accident, it happens.

Yeah I’m not buying this without a photo 😂 The nasty mother in law threads are getting more and more predictable.

Id be interested to see what babybel wax “all over a sofa” looks like 👀

I did like the bit about it being a self bought gift with a barely contained eye-roll. Women, spending the inheritance on nice stuff, the bastards.

Yes, 28 years later and I still think about it occasionally 😆

XiCi · 30/12/2023 12:27

You seem to think this is hilarious OP and it isn't. You were told that the kids couldn't eat on the sofa, so why did you let them sit with a babybel? Stop fucking around with irons and ice, explain to your mil what's happened, apologise and tell her you will pay for the stain to be professionally removed.

Santaisscouringindeedfornewjob · 30/12/2023 12:29

Presumably the manufacturers of Sudocrem did the necessary testing but never thought to use dc's hair or clothes to check it was washable..
Magic bloody stuff though on nappy rash.. Maybe it could make wax disappear also?

oakleaffy · 30/12/2023 12:40

SmellyKat10 · 29/12/2023 23:05

Oh godddd I take the wax off them before I give them to my kids because I’ve had this shit mashed into the carpet so many times.

I have no advice but I feel your stress.

Same here- That soft red wax is a massive liability
Has such a low melting point.

Sofas and eating just don’t go together- stuff like this happens.

The Mil was rash to allow eating on it.

Has she household insurance??

ilovebreadsauce · 30/12/2023 12:42

You need to be an adult and tell your mil! Hopefully it will be covered under her home insurance. Your efforts to clean it nay not be!

The MIL did NOT allow eating on it.she specifically told them not to.

What’s with all the laughing emojis? It really isn’t funny. Stop making it worse and hire a cleaning company.

Yes!
Or maybe it was E45- a big tub as prescribed.
Son used some and flung it back in medicine box without putting it’s lid on properly -

It ooooooozed out over everything like white lava over weeks.

I just chucked everything as so gloopy
when I next opened the box.

Thankfully the medicine box was plastic.

OrlandointheWilderness · 30/12/2023 12:56

How it gone OP?!

Variedviews · 30/12/2023 12:57

Are you still alive? 😱😂. What a nightmare. My MIL was not a fan of me. I’m praying for you 😂😂🤗

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 30/12/2023 12:59

Try distilled vinegar - it removes most stains
